June 25, 2008 - As we reported previously, the new Mitch Hurwitz (Arrested Development) FOX animated series Sit Down, Shut Up reached a production snag involving a dispute with their writers. The studio, Sony Pictures Television, insists that the series be under an IATSE contract while the writers insist the show be under the WGA contract. The writers walked off the job, ceasing work until the matter is resolved.
Variety is reporting that Sony has come back and issued an ultimatum to the writers: sign the deal with IATSE by Tuesday or end your affiliation with the show. Apparently the studio somehow sweetened the deal for the writers, but certainly fell short of changing the show's contract affiliation to the Writers Guild. While the series is being produced by Sony, it will air on FOX, and the rest of that network's animated series are WGA shows.
"I can't imagine they would really tank their own show over this and fail to deliver to Fox (and international buyers)," said one source to Variety, noting that Sony appeared to be playing "the hardest hardball." There is a bit of they said/we said about whether assurances were given that the show would be WGA or not. It's unclear whether Mitchell Hurwitz and his writers will stick with the show or not at this point. Given the fact that Hurwitz brought in voice cast from Arrested Development, including Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Henry Winkler there may be other elements of the series that are now in danger of going away - though no statements have been made by the cast regarding the situation.
