Arrival (2016)

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
Watching this for a second time.

Boring af movie.

Great story and alien design.

Overall, I'd recommend. This is true and good science fiction.

I really like all of Villeneuve's films, starting with Enemy. They get better each time out IMO.

I dug Arrival. I like that there is a dual theme, isn't just "Aliens" but the philosophical crisis of:

If you knew your not-yet-conceived kid was going to die young, if you knew she would live 15 years of good life and end with a year sickly deterioration, would you still have her?

Adams' character chooses to have her daughter, knowing what will happen, alienating Renner's character in the process

I have high hopes for DUNE

Darkmakaimura Darkmakaimura have you seen Enemy?

I don't see much of an issue with the dialogue. Just a bit too much whispering on Amy Adams part.

Really love the alien design. I'm so sick of bipedal aliens that think like us. These were actual aliens imo.

It's really good sci-fi if you're not full blown severe ADHD.

RIP Johann Johannsson

The score and sound design in this movie is some next level shit. You really need a decent sound system to get the full experience.

If was a decent time waster movie, I thought Amy Adams looked very cute in this film
Yeah she's the ex-gril of Doctor Strange, right?

I thought it was very compelling.
It was.

I feel kind of guilty saying it was boring because it was actually a good movie. Like I said earlier, I consider this true and good sci-fi with movies like Contact or 2001 or Interstellar.

Loved the movie. If you are into dramas that get into the nature and grand purpose of human existence then this is for you.
This ain't no Independence Day or War of the Worlds.

I quite enjoyed it for a watch. Probably wouldn't watch it again, but definitely worth at least a watch.
It was nice to see a different type of alien that was unique.

One of the most beautiful science fiction-films I've ever seen. Philosophical and thoughtful, with great performances from the two leads. Villeneuve is a master of his craft.

It liked most of it, except for the conclusion.
"I know the answer now because advanced time perception lets me access future me's memory who remembers the answer I know now" is a cheap trick, made to use the audience confusion to seem clever

It was a good flick, not as groundbreaking as some people were calling it, but definitely not hugely overrated like Annihilation. ;)

Ted Chiang (the original writer of Arrival) has written some of the best Sci-Fi this last decade.
His new collection of short stories (Exhalation) also features new unexplored ideas in science fiction.

I recommend the audible book !

Amy Adams can whisper to me anytime she wants.

I thought it was great....this thread made me finally watch Annihilation last night, which was also fantastic. The SCP vibe these give off is great.

Brilliant movie about how language fundamentally shapes our reality.

I thought annihilation was pretty shit tho

I wouldn't say its a cheap trick; it's about how linguistics can shape our perception of reality. Describing the 4th dimension would be nearly impossible for us to even imagine but we use language to help shape our understanding of everything happening around us.

I thought it was great personally.

As to whoever said it was basically contact; what? The two are nothing alike, especially thematically.
