Art & Screenshots From Samurai Shodown V

I would kill for a SS with high rez sprites.

BTW, did Genan die in the story or something? Why does he never return to the lineup?

He returns in Samurai Shodown Tenka, which hit japan arcades a few weeks back.

I'm a huge SNK fan, but I've never been into the Samurai Showdown series... so I'll be getting Tenka for PS2 later this year for sure

SNK/Playmore/Whateverthefuckthey'recallingthemselvesthesedays needs to dump all their legacy Neo-Geo graphics. Start from scratch, because this shit is just embarrassing.

Word. Most of the graphical assets in this game date back to the 1995 release of Samurai Shodown 3!

Even the Neo Geo release of the game a year or two back was inexcusable.

If 2D fighters sold millions of copies then I'm sure you would see Playmore, Capcom, etc move up to High res sprites, but the sad truth is they don't. Playmore moved to the Atomiswave hardware due to piracy of the NeoGeo games before they (sometimes) even hit the arcades. SS Tenka which is made on the Atomiswave looks better then SSV, but the sprites are of course still not high res.

Screens of SS Tenka.

Those look like full frame buffer shots. Interlacing will make it look 'normal'... Guilty Gear has spoiled us though.

Filtering on low res sprites is horrible. I'd rather go without.

Japan only or is a US release in sight?

No news on a U.S release at the moment. but, I would not be surprised if they ported it to the 360 sometime next year.

Looks like sex!
Kyoshiro is my fav. SS character, Tam-Tam and Earthquake the least.

Now where's Garou 2 announcement, SNK?

I know the numbers are somewhat disheartening, but end of the day I'm thankful that we still can enjoy 2D fighters. :)

Infact I pray that next gen will see the resurrection (Gill style ;)) of 2D fighting game popularity.

Hmmm... you know, really not bad numbers for SFAC between both platforms.

It kinda makes me feel that Street Fighter does still have a bit of a name.

Though while Tekken 5 obviously didn't tank, the numbers are still a bit :( compared to T4; considering T5 is so much better.

Dang, I've never had to import before. I defintely dont want to mod my console nor do i want to pay alot for a game.

The SFAC numbers are better than I thought, 300,000 for a 2D fighter ain't too shabby. I didn't even realise Marvel vs. Capcom 2 sold a quater of a million, looks to be still some devoted fanbase considering how old that title was.

Would it be fantastically stupid to ask why it's so much more expensive to have high-res sprites in a game? Is animation really that much more expensive? Or does it have something to do with mapping so many more pixels for gameplay? Both? It always seems odd to me that some games get actual animated cutscenes, but have 16bit sprites in-game, or only three frames of animation for walking or something similar.

Code:
MK Deception on ps2: 577,000
MK Deception on xbox: 400,000
MK DA on ps2: 1.4 million
MK DA on Xbox: 580,000

GGXX#R: 73,000

That's pretty fucking embarassing.

The same engine with mk characters instead of those fruity ass designs would sell millions too. The problem with GG is that the characters looks lame.

It's more expensive to draw new high-res characters for a game that will sell 50,000 than to re-use old art and sell 40,000. The cop-out solution of bumping the resolution and retouching as in KoF'94 Rebout makes the sprites look awful. You'd need to redraw every single frame by hand and fill in more details for the higher resolution, then go ahead and pixel them all out. At that point, you might as well just make a new game entirely.

For that reason, all games that had entirely new sprite sets (SF2, SFA, DS, SF3, KoF94, SS3, Garou, GGX etc) have quite small casts. And then people complain about that instead.

I really don't understand why they didn't go with Samurai Showdown 5 Special.

Neither do I, and it's absolutely inexcusable for them to just be porting SSV at this point. SS5 Special has been out for over a year, and SS Tenka is already coming to the PS2 some months down the road. On top of that, it looks like Playmore didn't bother to add anything to the Xbox port from the PS2 version that came out last July. Pass.

SS Tenka looks like it plays SO MUCH BETTER than SS5 and SS5 Special did, too. I found myself rather bored by both games after a week or two of play.

Hey.

If someone took my suggestion and did 3D cel shaded characters with 2D gameplay, they'd have something damn nice to show off to people and attract all the legacy fans (and they're plenty out there, but generally unimpressed by incremental advances).

Then 2D fighting games would be popular again. They can then spend the next decade figuring out the gameplay mechanics.

Sounds like a good plan. I don't know if it would make the genre popular again, but It would make it more interesting for us.

Any word on Tenka for 360?

Not yet, but I'm sure it's coming. It seems like SNK is simply replacing its Xbox releases with Xbox 360 releases instead, but things will likely stay the same, with the games coming out on the PS2 first, and the 360 some months (or far longer) later on. Neo-Geo Battle Colliseum might be an exception; I saw a print ad for the game advertising both the PS2 and 360.

If you like 2D fighting games, you need to have a Japanese or modded PS2.

3D ain't doin' that well either, just better 'n 2D.

The problem is most new fighters only appeal to existing fans of the genre, and those fans are losing interest. We rarely see any evolution in fighting games anymore, and when we do (i.e. Virtua Fighter 3, Tekken 4, Guilty Gear Isuka, Street Fighter III), fans complain and it's removed from the next game, making it impossible to attract new fans or bring back the old ones.
