Metaphor was too niche and it was the only other realistic option. Still, real happy that a 3D platformer won the award because while I hold The Pope Awards to really low esteem, there's always a chance that whatever popularity comes from it garners copycats. And the question here is always, what do you want people to copy? I want them to copy BOTW, Elden Ring, BG3 and for fucking sure a 3D platformer.

I haven't played Astro yet, so I can't speak on it. I like this award on the PRINCIPLE of the thing.

Congrats Team Asobi, i havent played Astrobot yet but they are a gem of a studio just from the AstroPlayroom game, im sure its deserved.

Next year Geoff need to create a category for game updates/ expansions/ DLCs so they dont steal a legit spot for a proper GOTY contender.

I'm in the camp of jaded fans that believe Sony lost its soul when they closed Studio Japan, and I always viewed this game as a pretty soulless "look at this and clap for nostalgia" bait.

But when the reviews came out, I was sure it was going to win GOTY only for the fact that it's the safest bet. All the other games have some weird asterisk attached to them, whether it's being a culture war representative, a way-too-niche title, a way-too-small-scale indie or what have you.

Astrobot is the perfect inoffensive candidate.

I did love the shout-out to Nintendo, tho.

As a 3D Mario mark Astrobot is the closest anyone (including Nintendo) have ever got to Galaxy imo. It's an absolutely incredible game and well worthy of being the first ever platformer to win the game of the year award. It's a masterpiece.

I should really play the pack in PS5 game and the VR game!

I think they'd do an Astro Bot spinoff of another genre first, but I certainly wouldn't mind seeing what else they can do. For some reason the first thing that comes to mind is a racing game like Mario Kart, or minigame-fest like Crash Bash (but good).

I'd have still given it to Rebirth personally because it was the most ambitious title of all the GOTY nominees, but AB's a great title.

It would do gangbusters as a launch game on Switch 2, probably even better than it did on PS5. But Hulst and Totoki will go with the brain dead idea of a PC port which will do as well as Rachet and Clank, plus the usual complaints of the most entitled customers among all gamers (PSN login, no RT, no widescreen, cannot play at 420 fps, and so on and on).
