At its core Tarantino's Pulp Fiction is an anthology film

I decided to watch every film directed by Tarantino leading up to the release of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It's been a little while since I last saw Pulp Fiction and I got around to watching this again last night. On every occasion I've seen this film I've considered it a masterpiece of cinema not only because of how impressive the performances are or how ridiculously engrossing the dialogue is but moreso how in every act there's this sense you think it's going in one particular direction only to be misled. Which is why I've always admired how each chapter is cut and placed out of order, so that there isn't a linear narrative. But then it struck me, this film is about 3 short stories, that can/are concluded within a standalone narrative structure.

What also makes this one story as well as 3 individual stories are the characters in the world that intercede and the achronological order of the story. If the story was told chronologically there would be no need for the preludes before each intertitle and therefore no intertitle. When I thought about it like this my mind was blown.

Storylines:
Vincent Vega and Marsellus Wallace's Wife
The Gold Watch
The Bonnie Situation

I started looking for interviews with Tarantino discussing how Pulp Fiction came to be and stumbled into this amazing interview with Robert Rodriguez, where he states that Pulp Fiction was conceived as an anthology film with short stories that were to have different writers and directors involved but Tarantino ended up keeping it to himself as he thought about a shared world between these interesting characters.

I think this is really impressive given how densely layered Pulp Fiction is and figured I'd share as I've never actually given this much thought in the past.

Well that was all in the interviews when the movie came out back then. I mean, that AND the soundtrack made it THE pop icon movie back then. The clubs and discos I went to all played at least one song from the soundtrack every night back then.

Was great times. I remember fucking some blond girl in the bathroom of the K5 in Karlsruhe to the title song and we both laughed shortly when that song started.

I think she was called Miriam...

One of my favorite movies ever. So memorable, so well done.

I’ve heard it referred to as an anthology film over the years and it makes sense. Non-linear structure that branches while still being connected at a base is masterful.

Probably my favorite QT film.

I hear the new one, One Upon A Time In Hollywood, is fantastic.

QT is my favourite director and this is probably my favourite QT film and maybe even my favourite film of all time.

I was unfortunately too young to watch this when it originally came out but it absolutely blew my mind when I watched it on VHS a few years later aged 12 and has remained a favourite over 20 years later.

I still watch it once a year without fail at a minimum and take great delight in showing the film to someome that has never seen it before (although that's increasingly rare these days). Over the years I've introduced this film to many people, mostly women, and this movie is definitely responsible for getting me laid on several occasions. If someone doesn't like it, it's usually a sign that we won't get on well.

The soundtrack is still absolutely amazing as well and if I ever get married it will be played in its entirety at the reception (this is a deal breaker for me).

Pulp Fiction is my favorite film of Tarantino's and the one that made me a fan of his work. I thought it was going to be some serious gangster flick but the movie drew me in with it's humor. Seriously, it's one of the funniest movies I've seen and it never fails to make me laugh at some of the more ridiculous moments.
