Atlus JP puts up Persona related teaser site counting down to November 24

*shrug*

My perspective obviously paints a rosy picture, because from my perspective it's growing pretty rapidly for what it is. As for why it'd break a million LTD, I dunno. I've got this weird feeling about it. If Persona 4 Golden, a re-release, managed to work as a Vita killer app for the month it released and had a surprisingly good LTD by Atlus' standards, I think we may be pleasantly surprised with how many copies Persona 5 may end up selling. Maybe not quite a million, but I'm expect it to be closer to that number than 500k LTD.

Again, gut feeling.

Well, at least you realize that your prediction is based on anything but reason.

Realtalk: I think Persona 5 might break a million in Japan LTD if it's a PS3 game.

Persona 4 sold well, but still below Persona 1's sales in Japan when it first released on PSX. The PS2's install base was leagues beyond where the PSX was when the games in question came out. The PS3 has a smaller install base than the 2, and fans have seen that the games will get updated re-releases on portable systems, which are actually popular in Japan.

So I honestly doubt it.

No chance only one game broke 1 million mark in Japan on PS3 and that was FF XIII with all that hype

...damn. That really is terrible. I figured that at least MGS4 had broken 1 million copies as well, but if not, eh. I'd revise my guesstimates to over 500k if that's how badly console games have fallen in Japan.

Would you guys agree that the Persona fanbase has grown more after Persona 4's release window? I mean, just today PersonaGAF got like two or three newly activated members. I personally got into Persona in late 2012 on the recommendation of a friend, and only played Persona 4 Golden/Arena in August. I also got two more friends into the Persona franchise, and that was this year. You can also find tons of posts by people on this forum who discovered Persona games post-P4. I feel like the more time you give the Persona franchise, the bigger it will keep getting because most everybody that plays the games loves it. There's no basis for this, but Persona 5(assuming it's as good as 3 and 4 have been) may just be a media darling that results in a relative breakout hit. The hype and rabid fanbase to spread the good word is there. I'd say that it's in a good position to blow up(relative to past game sales).

I played P3P for the first time last year in August because a friend suggested some games on the VIta. I fell in love with the series, I then bought P4G loved it. Then went on to play P1 and P2 IS/ET. I fell in love with this series. More and more people are finding about how great the Persona series is. SMT games are also fantastic, I recently finished Nocturne and I am going to start playing SMTIV once I get the chance.

You guys know what sold better than SMT IV and all the Persona games?

Catherine, aka their flagship title because it has the highest sales, because that's how it works, right?

Are you sure Catherine sold more than all their other games? I know it shipped 200k in the US, but it only sold 78k in its first month.

Hmm? Catherine opened to like 150k, above P3 and P4 Arena, but not above SMTIV or P4 (Power of 4?) I know it did a big launch here, though. I think 200?

The numbers given in Atlus's report are units shipped though. Comparing how many copies of Catherine were shipped to how many copies of Persona 4 or SMTIV were actually sold seems a little unfair.

Link and source both say sold, not shipped, unless I'm missing something.

You know, when you put it this way, I can't help but wonder why we haven't seen a Persona 4 HD release of some kind.

Persona 4 has gotten this great fandom despite the fact that it's only available on two really obscure platforms. Most people don't have a PS2 anymore, and even fewer own a Vita.

I played Persona 4 on my computer in an emulator. A freaking emulator.

How have they not released a PS360 version?

They did the same thing when the game came out. They posted a picture of the cake saying "200,000 copies sold in first week" or whatever, but when NPD numbers came out, we learned it actually only sold 78,000. Clearly they are referring to shipped. There is no way the game would actually sell an extra 150,000 units over just August and September, when it only sold 78k during release in July. They make money off copies shipped any way, not sold in stores to customers, so it makes more sense for them to use shipped in their reports as that is a sale as far as they are concerned.

....because Japan isn't interested in playing a 90-hour JRPG in front of a television, most likely. Considering the Vita is thought of as a floundering handheld yet has almost 20% of the PS3's LTD sales in Japan, I don't think it's that surprising. The Vita can only go up from here after all.

Fair enough.

Oh wow, no wonder companies such as Capcom are trying to change some of their console games to appeal to the west more. If they dream of mega sales for their console games, then they'll need to release in the west (which makes me wonder if previous PlayStation exclusive series made their way to the Xbox 360 due to the rise of the Xbox brand in the west). Of course, thankfully not all companies are aiming for mega sales and are okay with a more Japanese flavor for their games.

Whatever the next Persona game is gonna be, I hope they don't stick in yet another bath-scene. I mean, twice in the same game in P4G? Geez, at least make a little effort in making cliches!

P5 is about a young man who goes to work at a bathhouse. And all his social links fellow employees are female . . .
I'll take eight!

I'm sure someone has suggested this, but I haven't seen it in all the pages I've read over the past week.

But if Persona wanted to take a page out of Devil Survivor, the cities could be various cities that P5 takes place in. Tour or arcade unveiling sounds more reasonable, but precedence is not the most reliable foundation for any sort of "sure" feeling and that is what most Persona arguments are based off of. Precedence only means anything until they do something different, and Atlus has been doing plenty different lately.

announcements of announcements are getting way longer. Is the game coming out shortly after?
no

My guess that this is a stalling tactic for persona 5 and that they still don't have anything to show but SEGA is cattle prodding them.

Your guess is like super duper wrong.

Marketing doesn't work like that.

If this was Persona 5, you think they would have nothing to show after it's supposedly been in development for at least three years, of which two of them consisted of active development?

Yes. I mean look at FF15 and other Japanese super projects. They probably switched platform to the vita or the ps4 during development. Vita not doing as well as anticipated, panic, possible switch to another console.

Comparing this to FF15 seems disingenuous, especially since one of those games was announced and the other isn't. There are also a hell of a lot of baseless assumptions going on with your Vita/PS4 comment.

Still, I kind of see what you're saying. The only tangible thing we know exists is that there are Persona 5 sketches that Hashino mentioned Soejima had drawn on August 8, 2012 (unless he was lying).

It's like Tenchi Muyo~!

...As an aside, WHY WAS THAT SHOWN ON TOONAMI

Because you could get away with a lot in the '90s. I loved Tenchi.

This isn't a "Japanese super project". It's a budget game, by a small studio that's lucky to still be working.

Exactly. If a sony studio and a super project can be massively delayed, a company like Atlus which has to be very careful has a higher chance to encounter difficulties. I'm looking forward to this game as much as anyone else but I think that something is up.

I think your logic is all kinds of messed up.

Didn't know where to post this and hated to make a thread for this one question so I will post it here....

I just purchased Persona 3 Portable to play on my Vita after completing Persona 4 Golden last night. Started it up and.... you don't even have a character to move around? It's a freaking cursor? Is P3 FES the same way? I can't stand this cursor shit. So disappointed right now since I loved P4. :(

It was cut down for the PSP. FES still has moving characters and scenes and such, but all your party members will be AI-controlled.

Stick with it bro, point and click environment easier to deal than AI party and lack of skill card coming from P4G. Its also have the awesome female protag and the addition on her route gameplay.

Thanks! :)

Btw. I am always stunned how many people buy stuff without informing themselves. If I had the choice between three versions of a single game I would at least read the wiki entry or whatever.

No, there's only one option on the Vita, correct? And people constantly talk about how great it is and how 3 & 4 were so similair so I jumped in.

As long as I don't hear the word "mobile" anywhere in the press release then I will completely happy with whatever it is.

Persona or SMT? Wonderful!

Catherine? Sure! Why not?

More from Dragon's Crown or George Kamitami? Absolutely!

How about a completely new IP? Sure! I love Atlus and whatever they do is fine. Just keep away from mobile and make sure you localize it here in the US and Europe (because Europe needs some love too).

It would be lucky to break 500k lol. Optimistically somewhere between 350-400k (that would make it the best selling Persona/SMT game in Japan)

Not really just how bad certain franchises have fallen. Looking at the million sellers during PS1 days (the best software sales) heres what you see:

FF
DQ
GT
Hot shots
RE
Tekken

PS2 saw the decline of Tekken and RE. Winning 11 and Dynasty Warriors joined the million sellers. You have to remember this is with twice the userbase than the PS3.

I would love a persona 3 silver on vita. It kinda needs a definitive version. psp version doesn't have all the content and fes doesn't have player controlled party which is a huge downside to me.

Heres hoping for a Persona that is just a little more in line with P2 with dungeon exploration like SMT IV.

EDIT: To be fair in respect to Tekken and RE, Tekken 5 was a really good game after people got burned with 4 (or is that my assumption? 4 just didnt feel all that hot even though the soundtrack was cool) and Resident Evil kinda floundered around abit (Remake probably wasnt widely played at the time, and 4 took awhile to get ported to PS2).
