Also, where is their god damned R&D department? You'd think facing extinction, they'd be able to come up with more than a gym kit. They came up with a pretty good bunker systems, have the construction power to build that city, they have cannons, (
Revealed that they've had them for centuries, and they're useless.
) What gives? Surely they could come up with more effective weapons, and would have a very large group dedicated to weapons research.
They actually use cannons whenever possible, they're all along the walls (remember how
the colossal titan specifically aimed for them?
)
The 3DMG is for situations where they have no cannons and have no choice but to get up close and personal with the titans, like when they're evacuating townsfolk.
Nothing is wrong with the actual strategy though, it's user error that's the problem. The equipment works, the actual plan is effective when executed well, but the people involved just lack l33t sk1llz.
Quickly scanning the Wikipedia page to inform my girlfriend if the manga was ongoing was a huge mistake. Just assholish huge spoilers right in the fucking synopsis. I mean come on. Really taken the surprise out of some stuff now
What if they trained pigeons to land on the Titan necks, then strapped bombs to the pigeons? Maybe they wouldn't be able to train suicide pigeons fast enough though.

They should just make Guns and start using the 3 D gear to maneuver around the back to shoot the weakspot. Add a bayonet at the end for a clean kill when they run out of bullets.
why dont they just dig a big trench all around the city. the titans are slow and advance in a straight line, it could be very useful for studying and killing them.
Alright, I am an casual anime watcher, as in this is the latest thing I have seen in forever that's actually new thanks to you Gaffers. Finished episode 5 just now. All I can say is
I've never felt this way watching an anime. THEY KILL OFF EVERYONE. All I could think of is Starship Troopers first invasion battle and how everyone that you just grew to know gets slaughtered. My jaw literally dropped when Thomas was caught. Then it blew my mind when they killed off the main character who I guess isnt the main character and my guess would be the sister?(which would make sense to me) unless Armin gets filled with the power of revenge or whatever. Anyways, loving it. I am so glad I didnt watch them separately. I let two weeks go by before I watch them to. On another note, why the hell do they not have underground tunnels(atleast for emergency evacuation purposes)? Or just live underground and have the whole area above ground for farming? Lol just some random thoughts.
Edit - Also I love the fact that there is no perverted bullshit in this. That is why I stopped watching Highschool of the Dead.
hopefully it switches to Armin, hes been pretty underrated and getting some sort of anger and revenge to boost his skills to take out a titan or two would actually be pretty cool. Thomas did feel like it came from nowhere, one moment smiling and flying the next, in a month...

I was hoping for that so much, to finally see his five years of hard work finally pay off and slay a titan. I hope the events are basically just one bad dream, otherwise switch lead role to Armin.

Here's a good question. Why aren't the entrances better procted with natural fortifications? I mean why isn't there retractable bridges and a moat? Can the titans swim? They've got the tech for retractable bridges because it's just an application of the 3DMD.
Looking at how that one titan jumped into the tower, I don't think a simple moat or trench would stop them. They are surprisingly agile for their size.

Is it safe to hope that at some point this season we actually get to see some "decent" fights? I mean like how pros would actually deal with titans? or maybe next season perhaps?

Jesus fuck @ episode 5. Well, I think that the whole "far too stereotypical" critique is starting to loose ground. I doubt that anyone would have seen "that" coming. The fact that
Eren's death was preceded with mutilation
made it all the more horrible and shocking. Glad to see more shows and books borrowing a page from Game of Thrones and its "lol plotarmour" attitude. Some general musings about the series (non manga reader):
- This is truthly the Japan's version of The Walking Dead. Both are about mankind facing extinction against an overwhelming foe, and you can truthly feel the sense of dread. Character tropes or not, I find it quite refreshing to see an anime were noone is safe, period.
- The human military and political system is utterly corrupt and broken, and this as much of a weakness as any crack on the wall, really. The whole "best trainees get inside the walls rather than fight titans" speaks volumes, not to mention the goverment's policy of "ignoring the outher world" trought banning books about it and refusing to kick its economy / society into a fully military mobilization gear. Lack of new development techniques against titans is disturbing too, seeing how the current ones simply doesn't cut it (pun intended)
- The goverment's priority should have been send an expeditionary force to seal the breached wall as soon as possible. Not a fighting army, but rather a fast, mobile taskforce with a demolition team: arrive to the wall breach, place charges and make it collapse unto itself thus trapping the titans between the 2 rings so while the trapped Titans would still possess a treath, they would be unable to get reinforcements from the outside world and could be decimated little by little. Yes, I am starting to think out strategies for defeating the titans already, God I am hopeless now
- I love the show's premise, for the Titans are far more terrifying and unsettling than any other fantasy enemy that I have ever seen. Rentless, mindless, impossible to demoralize, impossible to negotiate or talk with, not only they are massive and mighty but also agile and with a hint of intelligence as shown by the last episode, which made them even more terrifying than they already were. Bonus points for also being utterly incomprensible: at least you can make a rationale out of why aliens invade Earth, so to speak. IMHO, titans crap all over zombies and aliens as ultimate foes of mankind, really. Even if they would be confronted with modern weapons, we would have to employ a "scorched earth" policy in order to make it work, me thinks
- Gotta love how we are at chapter 5 and we have yet to see
one single Titan being offed outside the opening
And now, crackpot theories ahoy (manga readers feel free to laugh at me):
- This is probably going to be a story about mankind's failing down completely (I wholly expect Titans to reach the core sooner than latter) and then a small group of armymen trying to explore the outher ravaged world and attempting to put all the puzzle pieces together about what the hell happend with the world, Dark Souls style. More surviving and mystery solving than Titan-slaying, so to speak
- So the regerating organ is located at the beggining of the Titan's spine cord, hmmmm. It would explain why some titans do survive a direct cannon impact to their skulls.
- Titans were probably man-made biological weapons gone awry. I bet that there's some way to control them, and that they probably come from the same place / laboratory complex or whatsoever, thus making it (theoretically) possible to end them with one single stroke
- I think that Titans eat humans as a mean to reproduce theirselves trought DNA gathering and some kind of freaky bipartition a la starfish. It seems logical: they lack of visible genitals, they do not need humans for eating, and they seems to see it as some kind of pleasurable activity. Eat humans: gain biomass, DNA, elements needed for reproduction. Which would also imply a kind of snowball effect regarding the titan's invasion: the more you loose to them, the more there will be of them
I really, really would like for the story to work and revolve around the initial premise rather than drift into the usual shatter memories / philosophical babblering that anime series tends to devolve into (see also: Claymore). Some of you manga readers comments makes me feel uneasy in that regard :S more crazy fights, mistery solving and desperate survival, less shonen troupes, "past in the mist" and philosophical waxing, please
There will be a point in the story where many people are going to cream themselves at the action (if it's well animated, of course). Dem spiderman antics never get tiring.
People wondering who the main character is have obviously skipped the OP. Even the lyrics have "Jäger" in them. Twice. I doubt they're planning to change the OP so soon.
