Yeah. I remember reading that back when the rumours started hotting up. I was more thinking about whether it will compete with other non local retailers who aren't chased to collect GST. Or will customs try and collect that when it enters the country?
That said...I find it hard to imagine them pricing groceries say 30% under Aldi. At least across the board. And it of course makes me wonder what impact that would have on farmers. Crushed even more?

Other than spot checking (like they currently do) there is no feasible way for customs to check everything, the volume is just too high.
For groceries I wouldn't see them beat Aldi, a lot of the stuff they sell is their own brands or exclusive to them, but on other items I wouldn't underestimate the buying power of Amazon. If there was one company that could stick it to the distributor it's them, not to mention they will probably handle the distribution themselves in most cases. At the very least it will hopefully destroy the duopoly of Woolworths and Coles and start bringing prices back down. The fruit and veg is an interesting one, it could be possible they don't even enter that space.
My suggestion would be to make it January 1st while keeping the 26th public holiday and calling something else, I'm not exactly sure what but something that reflects the fact that not everyone thinks of the day as a celebration.

I hope they make Mabo Day a holiday, purely for selfish reasons, so I'll get a day off for my birthday.

If they move it, I just want it to still be in Summer so that we can still have a barbie. From a historical point of view, celebrating either Federation or the Australia Act makes the most sense to me (obviously New Years Day not being an ideal slot for a new public holiday though).
Personally, I think they should just wait to move Australia Day until we become a Republic. That might actually get that discussion rolling again.

Mabo case day was more setting in stone that Terra Nullius is dead and buried but the 1967 referendum is a better show of unity as a country of diverse people's.

With the temperatures the past few years I don't think it would be an issue.
May 8 is an awesome idea.
Australia works well when we celebrate our mateship.
When we go all bogan and celebrate the country, thats when things go weird.

Pretty sure the issue with the Woolies/Coles duopoly isn't that prices are too high to the consumer, it's that they are too low for the supplier. Scary to imagine Amazon could make that worse. Who will there be left to sell to?
So why are we one of the most expensive places in the world for groceries? My little bit of googling came back with, "because we are used to paying high prices", but I didn't find anything conclusive. Are Coles/Woolies taking too much of a cut? We do most of our shopping at Aldi and find we end around 1/3 cheaper than shopping at the majors, granted Aldi do a lot of stuff in their own brands, but they do carry brand name items as well.
edit: reading more, while we are one of the higher priced countries when it comes to groceries, it seems per capita we are typically much lower
