The Sri Lankans came from Tamil Nadu?
Australians are generally apathetic and lazy due to our comfortable lives. Once you start actively informing them of the disgusting shit going on they tend to get at least a little concerned.
So hard to get up off the couch and do something about it though. Especially when the most widespread media spends their time demonising them.
Yes. They had fled to India initially but India was threatening to send them back to Sri Lanka.
Living in Sydney I've honestly never met anybody who didn't see the whole "boat people" thing as fear-mongering bullshit and I feel where I live is incredibly multicultural, but at the same time there has to be a bigger divide in mentality between the more metropolitan areas and the country side than what's immediately noticeable since I can't otherwise see why both Labor and Liberal kept playing up the issue.I'm not sure we can really blame this one on apathy, there seems to be a nasty undercurrent of racism that's easy to stir up in Australia.

Indonesia doesn't accept refugees, most of the rest of the countries you listed have no resources. You are suggesting people go to each country in turn, cap in hand, and then go to the next one?So it's not just Australia. Between India and Australia, there's also Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. Did they try any of those places before going to Australia, or did all of those countries also reject them? If everyone's rejecting them, then what's so specifically horrible that Australia has done the same?
.
It is not about immigration, that is separate to processing asylum seekers. The UN Convention that Australia has signed commits them to assessing claims for asylum and determining refugee status. Those bemoaning that this issue has "become" politicised are being somewhat naive. Every country has an immigration policy. The LNP were voted in at the end of last year very clearly stating that they would "stop the boats". Labor and the Greens claimed it couldn't be done but that is exactly what the LNP have done.
You may disagree with the policy or with how it has been done, but it was an election issue and they delivered on it.
It would be be helpful if immigration issues could be debated without cries of racist flying around. "Australia is a racist country" is just a ridiculous generalisation that doesn't contribute in any way. Debate about integration, economics, infrastructure, can any county really just have a policy that they will take in anyone from anywhere anytime?
When people arrive at a country by air they are able to proceed into that country only if they have a valid passport and if necessary, visa. If you do not you will be returned immediately. Yes of course people outstay their visas for whatever reason. If the authorities catch up with you then you will be arrested.
The unfortunate people who have been duped into paying thousands of dollars to get on a leaky boat that has a good chance of sinking on the voyage are told to throw away their passports on the way. The unscrupulous bastards who play on the hopes and fears of people who want to better their lives and end up putting their families lives at risk are the true criminals in all this.
Yes. They had fled to India initially but India was threatening to send them back to Sri Lanka.
''We have land here, we have homes, we have electricity, we have education, and every time someone gets on a boat to go to Australia without a visa, we are losing that, and that is what I am trying to prevent.''

I remember hearing from a friend doing a global studies degree that apparently we're vastly below most other 1st/2nd world countries in terms of how many immigrants we take on yearly. Not to mention the whole focuses on 'boats' is also dumb when most immigrants come via planes and those coming from boats are far more likely to be coming from war-torn countries following UN standards we're not supposed to be able to immediately turn away like this. I hope next elections the only focus isn't just on how badly the Liberals fucked up the budget.
So what's the majority opinion of the Australian public regarding this matter? Because surely this is not something that both parties there would endorse if they don't have a strong public opinion backing them up?
Or is it they just don't care in general?
How do we know this when there has been no assessment made about their claims? In fact we know some of the Tamil who participated in crimes against humanity including the massacre of children, and ethnic cleansing fled to India after the war, so it is very possible these asylum seekers could include these people.

Tony Abbott is a complete lunatic.
I guess I'm in the camp that isn't opposed to controlling migration but is pretty much staunchly opposed to how refugees arriving by boat are actually treated. These conditions are inhumane and now we're not even bothering to process on land apparently? Or at least the government is actively denying/not confirming/hiding information about it for reasons unknown? What the fuck.

Sorry, but how is Australia supposed to preserve its culture if it keeps letting outsiders in?

At least he's capable of far less damage than Bush..Holy shit he actually seems dumber than Bush.
A lot of our culture has come from letting outsiders (eg WW2 refugees) in though...Sorry, but how is Australia supposed to preserve its culture if it keeps letting outsiders in?
