I've always had a soft spot for Aphex Twin (Icct Hedral, On, Donkey Rhubarb, Windowlicker, Polynomial-C, Girl/Boy song are amongst my favorite) but I couldn't choose since I barely know Autechre. Where should I (re)start ?

A lot of people say to start in order, but Incunabula (their first LP) might be my least favorite after Draft 7.30, though even their 'worst' LPs are still quite good. Personally I started with Trirepetae, and I think that's a good place to start, but Amber and the associated EPs (which are Trirepetae's antecedents) are really good too if you're more into the ambient vein of things, and I would recommend both. Trirepetae is more representative of a particular style they maintained for a period, though. I think Chiastic Slide is the best incarnation of that particular style imo, but for me it was a bit of a grower and I didn't like it immediately.

I'd say to get Trirepetae++, it has Trirepetae LP as well as the Garbage and Anvil Vapre EPs from the Amber era. They don't put out too many EPs but generally I'd say that their EPs are better than their LPs, but it's close either way.

A vote for Autechre from me. When Autechre where in their prime, they where pushing electronic music forward by themselves. They would release music that sounded like nothing else. Each album was completely different from the one before it. Amber was drastically different from Incunabula and Tri Repetae was completely different from Amber, and Chiastic Slide again completely new, etc.
Each time, other artists would release albums some moths later that sounded like what Autechre had just put out. There are several artists, labels and genres that are direct descendants of Autechre's output.
And their releases under the Gescom name and on the Skam label where pretty good too.

But both are big names. Aphex is the more accessible and marketable of the two. I have to praise him for the laughs, and the magazine covers.

In any case, Warp Records is all that matters. The Blue Note of the 21st century.

Bump..

Never heard of Autechre before, like AT listening now actually..

Whats recommended starting for Autechre?

Most people will say Amber as a good starting point, Incunabula too. I personally fuck with the more chaotic experimental releases more, but any era is dope pretty much.

Aphex Twin because of

Come To Daddy LP
Windowlicker
Selected Ambient Works Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 (but primarily Vol. 1 and Xtal in particular)

where is aphex twin? seems like I havent heard any new music or seen any new videos?
The last thing he did was an album and EP under the name "The Tuss". He never confirmed it...but listening to it, it's definitely him.

I like Autechre but I find AFX puts out more interesting, listenable stuff. Autechre sometimes feels a bit too much like technologic masturbation.

Amber and Piezo are amazing tho.

Been listening to Drukqs lately. Pretty amazing. It feels entirely different through headphones or played out loud, but equally awesome.

man....i agree, this was always one of the rdj albums i overlooked until recently, utterly mind blowing stuff.

That seems to be a trend tho, his music is so fucking layered that I never hear/feel the same thing, perpetually morphing.

With Richard D james finally realeasing a lot of stuff in the past year
( New album

aswell as Autechre releasing Elseq 1-5 with over 4 1/2 hours of new stuff,

the question OP asked seems more relevant today than it did when this Thread was created.

With me being one of many voices that were more into Aphex Twin

Aphex twin all the way. Even though Druqks got a lot of hate back then i still consider it one of the best electronic albums ever made. Not his best work ( as SAW II ) but still miles ahead of what is currently put out by others.
Could not get into the later works of AE ( but Exai is fucking great )

I might be on Team Autechre after re-visiting all of their stuff aswell their new release Elseq 1-5.

Which artist do you prefer GAF ?

Off course Aphex is the emperor of them all (mostly due to the Selected Ambient Works albums that are maybe the finest pieces of electronic music ever made).

I do feel like people are always glossing over the master Robert Henke. Maybe because he's such a geek and more interested in the technology then the artistry and hardly enters the foreground. Dude was one of the original designers of Ableton Live for f*cksake.

Some of my favorite works of his:

Monolake - Index

Monolake - Macau

Monolake - Linear

Robert Henke - Fragment | Endlos

Robert Henke - Layering Buddha

If you ever see his Lumiere show anywhere near don't hesitate to go. Dude is pushing the boundaries in laser projection technology right now.
Here's his Lumiere II show on Boiler Room (though it's way more impressive live then on the screen)
