Automotive Discussion Thread | OT2 | Zero to pointless fighting faster than a GT86

Any time the clutch is disengaged the bearing is being worn, I don't think it matters if it's partial engagement or not. Maybe it depends on the transmission?
Yup. I don't ride my clutch unless I'm backing out but maybe it fucked up while doing launches (lol) when I first got the car. TOB doesn't produce any noise unless I just step halfway. Other than that the clutch is fine.

Sounds like we all pretty much back out the same way.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
LOL

Maybe they think the Hellcat is your wife's? :p

She's had an absolute blast with it since we picked it up. Her first car was a beat up POS with a stick, so she's gotten the hang of it much faster than me - hell, it's kind of embarrassing.

Her enthusiasm has been great, though. She's already telling me we should plan to go to the SRT racing class thing this summer. I was honestly a bit wishy-washy on even going through with getting the vehicle, and she's the one that convinced me. I'm a worry wart - what if we get sick? What if I lose my job? What if we have triplets? What if there's an emergency? What if something terrible happens and insurance doesn't come through? And she was the one to say "yeah, but we're young and a team and don't have kids yet... when are you going to have a better chance than now before you're retired?"

You should listen to your wife. =) Stuff comes and goes but experiences and the memory of them lasts a very long time. If you have a chance to do something fun and cool you definitely should take it.

Can you make personality clones of your wife? Lol.

My last ex was supportive of my Miata but admitted that if we ever were to get hitched, my Miata would be living on borrowed time. While that wasn't the major reason we broke up, admittedly it was a minor factor in the grand scheme of things.

I pretty much echo what matmanx1 said... life is too short to hold back experiences and all that especially when you're under 40 lol.

The only "trick" you need for learning stick shift is to avoid traffic lights on steep hills until you've got a good feel for where your clutch biting point is.
Letting off the hand/side brake and rolling into the car behind you is never a good thing!

She's not wrong at all, in fact i'd say she's a keeper ;)

That's how my wife started out back when we first met, progressed to a point where she now has her own car and comes drifting on weekends, pretty good at it too!
Definitely helps marriage to be able to work on your car as much as you want and know she isn't sat in the house getting more and more angry, because she's sat across from you working on her LSD, lol

Brought home a Macan Turbo. Wow, this thing is even more fun than the Panamera. Feels like a lifted luxurious Evo.

It's my day off tomorrow so gonna be putting this thing through its paces.

That sounds like the best Daily Driver ever.

One day, perhaps.

How's the interior vs the panamera?

...and that, kids, was the first time I sucked a dick for crack
Damn this thread has got me thinking too lol.

What I do is depress the clutch to the catch point and once it's rolling back, I instantly press the clutch towards the firewall again and just let physics take over. I'm still in reverse gear while my foot is all the way down... does that count as riding the clutch?

Once in a while I do give it some gas, but I still end up the same way with the clutch fully pressed once I've got enough momentum to let me move around.

Yep yep yep, same here. Just that inertia to get going, then fully depressed until I need more.

Same. Inertia. Feather the clutch, give it some gas, clutch back down once it's moving at a decent speed, rinse and repeat. When you back up, you're only moving .5 or 1MPH at most and 99% use it for parking. The only time you need to fully engage reverse is if you need to cover like a whole block in reverse. LOL Seems like we've all got the same concept, though.

And FUCK I hate these MT talks. I am literally having my manual transmission dreams every week now.

Your wife is awesome. It feels nice, right?

Mine also encourages me to do shit that other wives would NEVER allow their husbands to do. Who purchased a 510HP super coupe with a child on the way and didn't get reamed out last year? Me!

High five to us, Skeli. Glad you're enjoying the kitty. Don't worry about clutch slip and all that. If you're jerking the car, that means you're not slipping enough. I usually like to feather/dab the throttle as I bring the clutch out until the car starts to move forward and then I apply a bit more and let off the clutch fully.

I think its the case of it was built to sustain being pressed and depressed thousands of times so holding it longer while reversing, taking off slopes, stop/go etc shouldnt do any substantial damage unless you are doing something stupid.

Thats what I heard in yt video anyways. Your going to have to have it replaced anyway at some point.

Started looking into buying a house. This might seem wildly off topic, but my main reason for doing so is because I want a damn garage.

I want to finally be able to park and hook up my Boxster to a trickle charger without having to remove the damn battery and still have room to spare to display my bikes highlighted by a couple of well aimed halogens. Oh yes.

Niiice! Hopefully you can put it through its paces and get a good feel for it. I was mightily impressed with the GTS version and I know the Turbo is another notch up from that.

Absolutely agree. The garage project at my house has been in talks for years now and we are oh so close to actually getting under way. We could have borrowed the money and made it happen before now but decided we would rather save and then be able to pay for the project without the assistance of a loan.

If you are a car enthusiast and want to invest in the hobby then it only makes sense to have a space for your toys. One of the reasons I got rid of the Boxster was our lack of an enclosed space to park it and before I buy my next "nice" car I really want to make sure I have a proper place to put it.

My man.

Remember, two post lifts are only a few grand installed, so find a place with a high garage ceiling!

Save until you can get what you want. Getting into something that works just to get in the game will lead to regrets. As new bills start popping up for shit you never expected, you watch your savings slowly dwindle as you hope you can get out of the house with equity at the right time. It can be a serious time investment that saps not only you, but your relationship.

If you're on the west coast, wait for the impending crash.

I'm renting right now after selling my first house, and it is quite liberating. Rent can frequently be much smaller than a mortgage payment (especially if you're paying 1.5-2x mortgage like you should).

So ya, there's always renting a house as an option.

Yeah, what lead me to up the urgency on the search is that questions are starting to be asked with regards to my taking up two spaces in the apartment complex where I live. I worked something out with my neighbor, but it's still something the landlords frown upon.

My man.

Ha, pretty cool idea. There's not a lot of real estate that allows for that here in the Netherlands though. Maybe a bike lift...

Thanks for the advice, not a bad idea to cool my horses a little bit. Though rent here in the Netherlands, like in the US probably, is so insane that I feel more and more miserable each month as the money isn't put towards something I actually own. Complicated stuff. Especially considering how our generation's income and possibilities seem less and less as sure a thing. Generalizing a fair bit of course, but it's hard feeling anything remotely like security and confidence with the way things are going.

Yep. People push the "buy a house" thing so hard, but neglect to tell people about the downsides. The "wasted money on rent" is such an issue, that they don't even talk about what happens when you well pump, furnace, hot water heater, or any other expensive thing fails. Heck, even a giant spill on carpet that you have to fix/replace costs a ton.

Though I came out of my house with a lot of money in the pocket, I didn't really make much at all, considering what I had to put into it. If I took the extra money I was putting towards mortgage + fixes + upgrades in an investment account, I'd be a lot better off.

But, that's speaking from the perspective of the US, rather than the Netherlands, so the situation might be completely different. Lots of houses here for rent.

I've been watching Shelby GT350/R YT videos and I'm in love. You can actually find the 350 non R for a good price, but the ADM on the R is crazy stupid; like 20-40k

It's so hard to find garages with high ceilings.

My current place has a solid concrete floor, insulated walls and maybe 16' ceilings. But I rent and can't install a lift. :'(

You reminded me of this Jalopnik article where one of the writers gets a 4-post lift in his garage:

http://thegarage.jalopnik.com/i-just-spent-5000-on-a-car-lift-and-i-couldnt-be-happi-1791703186

Saw that and loved it! I wonder about having a wheel lift vs a chassis lift, though, because most of the time if the car is in the air the wheels are coming off too. Might be nice for quick oil changes but that's about it. His has an attachment for doing a chassis lift on top of the wheel lift, but then there's so much shit in the way you could never drop anything properly.

How do you remove an exhaust or driveshaft with a lift blocking the middle of a car?

There's no way I would own a nice car without having a garage to store it in. I had an '04 Frontier that I parked out on the street and didn't care about, but now that I have a WRX (and a new 2019 STi in 1.5 - 2 years) I would never consider doing that.

I have to keep my Miata outside. I drive it year round though and keeping it below freezing helps with salt corrosion, but I still wish I had a garage. Mostly because of how annoying pollen is during the summer.

My S4 was on the street or a car port everyday. I live in SoCal so didn't really have to worry about the weather too much but was concerned about possible sun damage to the paint or interior. Kept it well waxed and tinted and never had an issue with it.

Its nice having wives/gfs supportive in car habits huh? My wife is just as excited for my exhaust to come in as I am, and offered to buy me an intercooler upgrade for my bday. I said thanks, but I already ordered that as well... And she just laughed.

Very nice. You looking to adopt a 22 year old any time soon? lol.

haha, possibly if it means i get to avoid my kid being a teen!

First port of call is more space however, already overstretching the parking space as it is, so i've been looking into buying an old disused factory lot down south with perfect foundations but the building on it is literally falling apart, and because of that it's absolutely dirt cheap, so the idea is to buy it, knock it all down, build a new house on the land with a sizable (6+ car, 2 floor ceiling height) garage for our cars/projects.

uGZEVjT.jpg

Here it is from the front, in about as worse a state as you can get, doesn't look all that big from the front, but it extends in deeply, as you can see from this angle:

zjyDETj.jpg

Whole unit is up for sale, and has a nice sea view to boot.

And some more detail on the actual layout and interior (and how bad the structure on the land actually is, yey fallen roof!)
Someone wanna guess what the asking price is, for the entire unit + land ownership?

Yeah, it's great! she wasn't that into cars at first, but after a few drift events she got hooked

man the rear quater in that first shot just looks astonishingly terrible to me.
Whole car has this really drawn out, long sweeping feel then the last 25% just looks like someone couldn't fit it all in the photo so they squashed it on the horizontal to fit, the bonnet/hood is as long as the rest of the car !! not a fan at all.

I'll properly judge the car in a few weeks at the Geneva motor show

I'm digging that rear end. So sexy.

My gf isn't really into driving but she's Okay with me spending money this year on fixing my car up then buying a new one within the next couple of years. I'll probably give my car to my little sister when she graduates highschool or buy her a mini with the help of my pops.

Haha, the more I look at it, the more I think it looks more like a Viper and less like a Corvette.

Definitely more Corvette to me, based on first looks. Its the slowly rising hoodline vs the Vette line plus the way the roofline goes + the rear is waaay more Vette in my eyes.
