Avatar: The Way of Water | Review Thread

Without spoilers, is there a clear indication of the direction the series is going? I feel that, given the time between A1 and A2, there is probably a quasi-reboot aspect to A2 since they are basically a generation apart that hopefully won't be necessary for more rapidly paced sequels. But I'm curious if there are hints at things beyond the human/Pandorian struggle.

I see it Saturday, sooooooo pumped!

Also, if you HAD to take a pee break, when is the best time? Asking for my little friend....

First off, there's no time to pee. Take a bucket in with you if you have to.

Every fucking scene is insane especially towards the end. I've never seen shit like this before in cinema.

Normally people are rummaging around in their buckets of popcorn, or digging into a bag of M&M's. I heard fuck all almost the whole movie through. The front row of people never touched their popcorn until halfway through or something. People were just floored by what they were seeing. You could hear a pin drop.
Everyone was quiet and I'm going to assume it was because of the crazy visuals. I heard some audible gasps during some scenes.

As to the story, everyone will have an opinion on that. Some will say its boring, others will say its great. I don't much care to say either way. I was entertained is all I will say.
There are questions you're going to ask yourself around the characters and I believe future sequels will answer those questions. There's a lot of theories I have but I don't want to spoil it for anyone who has yet to see the movie.

I liked the first one and I Love this second one. I plan to see it again soon.

To be honest, I didn't even plan to watch it in HFR 3D, because I really dislike HFR and am not fond of 3D either... But my friends dragged me to see it, because they said "dude, it's Avatar, you gotta see it in 3D".
Yes, I've seen the transitions between HFR, but they were pretty brief and didn't bother me. What surprised me the most was that I didn't hate the HFR. After a while I almost forgot about it, because of the epic on-screen spectacle.
I don't regret having seen it HFR 3D now. The CGI was mindblowing. I also thought the story had a powerful message.
I definitely plan on watching it again sometime in the future, but this time in just plain 2D without HFR, in order to see how it compares (and to come to my personal final verdict on the best way to watch the movie).
All in all, it was a fucking great experience. Probably the best movie this year right after Top Gun 2.
Underwater, hfr was simply incredible. I just wish the transitions were smoother somehow. Yes, and finally some Cgi that doesn't look like crap. Especially the Marvel movies look worse and worse. I think I liked Avatar 2, but it will take me a while to watch it again.

Avatar 2 didn't have a break for me. Part 1 at that time I think so. But what I also noticed. No one talked. Quite a difference after Thor 4 where I partly did not understand the movie, because half the cinema was talking.

Bro, not a word of a lie. I've never watched a movie like this where people were that quiet and I noticed it very early after sitting down. Not even during the quieter scenes was there any activity from anyone.

I dropped my cup of soda on my armrest at one stage and it sounded really loud. Like it was that quiet. But I get what you're saying. In some movies there's just a whole lot of shuffling, talking or something going on to indicate there's people in there with you. Not with this movie.

Very surreal experience but also goes to show that the people were clearly captivated by what they were seeing on screen. I mean it can only be that reason unless everyone was asleep lol

With that said, Cameron has smashed the visuals bar. Its a fecking tall order for anyone to follow.

There was never going to be a 4. That's why they put THE END on the third movie, the closest to a 4th is the animated series. It's actually in Bob Gale's and Zemeckis' contracts that no one can make a sequel or reboot to the movies as long as one of them are still alive.

I’m content with there never being a sequel or reboot of the series, at least for many more years. What’s funny is that when the animated series came out, I figured it was used to keep the characters and franchise in the public eye for a sequel. (The cartoon went where I wanted the series to go in a lot of ways) That also was the pre internet era, and studios would make cartoons for basically advertising their franchises or personalities, which I recall hating. Everything from Rambo to Louie Anderson was on tap Saturday mornings in that era. 😂

Wow that's something to know about the contracts. thanks for sharing.

But yeah a part 4 wouldn't make sense. What was the timeline going to be since they've already gone way into the future in Part 2 and way back into the past in Part 3.

Bbbut China loves Avatar!

Yesterday was the first ever Avatar 2 thing I have seen in China, it was a videoscreen in a mall showing the trailer. The movie comes out here in China (where I live) tomorrow.

I was here when the first Avatar movie was released and it was fucking everywhere. This one, you'd barely knew it existed. No merch, no advertising out there on the streets.

How big the original movie was that I knew how to say it's name in Chinese (Pointless Chinese that goes on the barely usable ever list) Avandar as you read it is how you say it in Chinese.

This was never beating Endgame, let alone Avatar 1 at the box office. Endgame opened with $1.2 billion worldwide & this is tracking to open north of $525 million WW. My personal prediction is $2-$2.2 billion in the end but I’m starting to consider a scenario where it ends it’s box office run anywhere from $1.6-$1.8 billion due to word of mouth after looking at some of these reviews. WOM carried Endgame big time for the first 3 weeks.

This is tangential but when this thing underperforms and it will, (don't count on China to save it nerds they're going through massive COVID lock downs and protests) Cameron will simply blame the MCU.
Now just waiting for the MCU to be blamed.

$36 for two tickets. And then they wonder why movie theaters are dying.

Why the fuck do i have to pay $4 to buy tickets online anyway. Everything is online nowadays. Whats next? Is amazon going to charge me a convenience fee for buying stuff on a website?

Same happend here during our screening here in Germany. The first 20min had ugly artefacts and it totaly distracted my experience. The movie was stopped and we had to wait 10min, after that the picture was perfect from start to finish. I was very angry....waited 13 yeas for a new Cameron film and the first Impression was just terrible.
I think it had something to do with the high frame rate. Not sure, but i think it startet in hfr and after the "restart" the movie ran in normal frame rate. But i could be wrong.

The movie was awesome! I totaly forgot i was watching a CGI Movie, just spectacular from start to finish.

Pro:
- great villain
- great effects
- great 3D
- nice edditing with clear action
- many scenes paid hommage to older Cameron movies
- the story was ...."okay"
- great animals
- i liked the children (not annoying)
- you will forget everything around you for 3h. A perfect escape fron reality

Con:
- a bit too long....the movie is never boring, but i think it could have been a bit shorter. Just a bit.
- the story was ..."okay"
- human bad, navi good. A bit too simple for my taste
- navis say "bro" and "dude"....wtf cameron?

I have to see it again but i really liked it!
7-8/ 10
Better than the first movie? Not sure. Better than T1/ T2/ Aliens? Nope
Do i want to the Avatar 3? Yes! :)

I will never understand why hoards of grown men, who all undoubtedly paid to see it, hate on avatar on a comical level. It's easily better than most movies the last ten years, especially the star wars sequels and a lot of super hero movies. It had big ass aliens flying dragons while fighting marines in helicopters getting shot at by hellfire missiles. Like Jesus fucking Christ wtf more do you want?! LOLOL it's entertaining and the movies are beautiful to look at. Get over yourself and get over your egos. Just enjoy the fucking film. Not every movie needs to be Goodfellas or Pulp Fiction.
It was every kids dream of a movie and most people willing to get over their "hot take" of "iTs fErNguLlY" comments that every single post on social media about avatar is loaded with, enjoy the fuck out of it.

A lot of these same people go on to rave about The Fast and the Furious or Transformers franchises.

THIS is accurate.

Especially the bolded. It didn't feel like a 3 hour movie. The kids were great. I instantly liked them all.

You really feel like you're transported to Pandora and some of the shots are just insane. How the hell did they do it. I'm really interested to see a 'Making Of' documentary for this movie.

Going to watch it again tomorrow night since I missed the first 5 minutes or so but even if I didn't, I would still rewatch it.

Watched the film last night, and I've let it percolate. Overall, I really enjoyed the movie, and it's an easy recommendation for just about everyone. I'd say it's probably better than the original, but it's strengths are probably different than the first, so it's a tougher comparison. I will say: it's actually a smaller film than the first, with a deeper focus on characters, and that caught me a little off guard, given the budget and run time.

I adored the visuals, obviously, and it's a real visual treat in 3D. Pure cinematic escapism that's simply hard not to enjoy. As a big fan of underwater documentary, the middle hour could've run another full hour and I'd probably not have complained. It's also simply a good, heartful story, which will always resonate stronger than the mostly hollow stories of the modern blockbuster. It's nice to have a big expensive movie that's actually worth going to the cinemas to see. I also loved the sheer scale of the human enterprise this time around, even though they're the bad guys. This is humanity empowered by glorious sci-fi technology, moving at scale and in force, and holy fuck is it a sight to behold.

I do have some hang ups: trailers spoiled more than I'd like - but I chose to watch them so that's my fault, a lot of the advertised characters are actually really minor players that straight up disappear towards the end, a few of the retcons are odd creative decisions, and the smaller scale left the film feeling like "the first half" instead of a fullblown Chapter 2. With that said, absolutely keen to see Avatar 3, and cannot wait to see where this story goes from here.

All aboard.

Just got back. Story was just ok in my opinion and it felt like a middle story where they are building to something much bigger, but everything else about the movie was jaw dropping. Personally feel that this has to be seen in 3D. The world and the creatures that inhabit it felt real. I'm now curious how the effects will hold up in 15 years because right now I can't imagine anything topping it. But of course, I imagine Cameron will somehow do it. I am definitely going to go see this again in a couple weeks.

Just because the SW sequels and the MCU movies are crap it doesn’t mean that Avatar is any good. Without the 3D fad, it would have been forgotten by now. One more thing - I don’t think people actively hate the movie - in fact, unlike SW or Rings of Power, the people who don’t like the movie are ambivalent to it.

After giving my opinion on the film in a hurry yesterday, I would now like to go into a little more details... WITHOUT SPOILERS! (and sorry for my bad english)

Pros:
- The vilian:
I liked Cameron's approach of "putting the opponent on the other side". Every time he was on screen I had a lot of fun with the character. People say the vilian is very "old school" and "one dimensional" who only wants revenge...well, that's true. And yet it still is a pleasure to watch him follow his little journey into the world of Pandora.

- CGI and 3D:
I've actually never seen anything like it. When I first saw the trailer, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed. I couldn't really see the promised quantum leap in technology...but yesterday in the cinema the 3D was a revelation. Before the movie started, trailers for Antman 3 and Guardians of the Galaxy 3 were shown. Not only did the effects look boring, but you could hear how annoyed the movie theater audience was with Marvel. Same shit - different movie i guess. The 3D was the best 3D I've ever seen. It really feels like a window into another world. The image was crystal clear, bright and filled with rich colors. Perhaps this film will trigger a new boom in 3D TVs. I could certainly imagine "4k HDR+ 3D TVs" in the near future.

- Editing:
No "shaky cam", no excessive use of cuts. You can follow the action without getting a headache. That's how it should be done!

- Many scenes paid homage to older Cameron movies:

thats-it-yes-thats-it.gif

Titanic, Terminator, The Abyss...i had a smile on my face every time i spotted a familiar scene. Camerons eye for visual design is unmatched...maybe Ridley Scott comes close.

- Wildlife:

avatar-avatar2.gif

Cameron loves exploring the sea in real life and it shows....Pandoras underwater world with its numerous sea creatures is just breathtaking. We see animals that integrate perfectly
into the world of Pandora and leave the viewer amazed. A highlight of the film for me.

- The children:
People don't like the character "Spider"? Why? Maybe he is a tiny bit rebellious and arrogant, but he never becomes unbearable, at least not for me. I have to say that I liked every kid in this film, including Spider and little arc. His background story created an interesting contrast to the other children in the film that I didn't expect.
We're still not talking about Shakespear storytelling here, but that's not what this film is made for and i am okay with it. The character of "Kiri" is my favorit character in the movie. The only thing I found kind of embarrassing was that the brothers were throwing words like "dude" and "bro" at each other. Why would a child growing up on Pandora use such words?
Didn't fit into the film at all!

- Escape from reality:
thanos-reality-is-often-disappointing.gif

For 3 hours you're "trapped" on Pandora...and you just don't want to leave anytime soon. I forgot everything around me. Everything!. It's like booking a ticket to another world and thanks to the 3D effect, this roller coaster ride also seems incredibly real. Just like the first movie, no other cinema experince comes close. Despite the many small weaknesses, I want to go back to Pandora as soon as i can.

Cons:

- The movie is too long:

Even though I said that I would have liked to have stayed even longer on Pandora, you can tell from the film that it is part of something bigger. The film's story and pacing are not as smooth as other James Cameron films and because so many characters and storylines are shown, the film feels overloaded. Terminator 2 for example is a long movie. Hell, the T1000 basically dissapears in the middle of the movie for about 40min. and yet the movie feels perfect from start to finish. Unfortunately Avatar 2 doesn't feel as sleek and balanced as Camerons masterpiece. Maybe once part 3 (and then maybe 4 and 5) are released, Avatar The Way of Water will fit a bit better into the overall arc of the story. But at the moment, the movie feels like a too long Directors Cut version. The film doesn't really feel complete and independent. Reminds me a bit of Dune - Part 1...

- Music:
Holy shit that was uninspired, generic and boring, sometimes even annoying. James Horner's theme is as beautiful as ever, but the rest is just forgetable. Very disappointing.

- Cringe and cheesy:

avatar-neytiri.gif

What I appreciate about James Cameron is his perfectionism. My favorite director of all time is Stanley Kubrick. And these days, for me, there are only two people who can hold a candle to Kubrick in terms of attention to detail...David Fincher and James Cameron (..and Ridely Scott, although the man has just disappointed me too often lately).
What I appreciate so much about these directors is their laser-focused way of telling a story. Are there any scenes in Kubrick, Cameron and Fincher films that might seem a little "weird" or "out of place"?...sure! (Arnie smiling in T2, the scene with the skeletons in The Shining, the penguin in Fight Club). Still, these scenes never really bothered me, no, I even find them kind of cool and interesting, if still weird at the same time.

Well, luckily there are no big cheesy scenes in Avatar (maybe 1or 2), but some dialogue moments feel super cheesy and I rolled my eyes several times.
Cameron has always walked a fine line between cool and cheesy (one liners in true lies, dialogue between the marines in aliens, or Colonel Miles Quaritch's speech in the first avatar), but holy shit sometimes the dialogue in Avatar 2 seems really awkward and cringy. Cameron, Fincher and Scott know who to make a scene look awesome, but you also have to pay attention to the dialogue in order to make the whole thing fell natural and perfect. Not this time.

- Jake und Neytiri:
The two are now parents and the focus of the film is on their 4 children. Still, they could have been incorporated more into the story. In Act 2, you hardly see them and their character development is almost non-existent. I liked Jake in the first movie. Sam Worthington is not a super talented actor, but he played Jake Sully convincingly enough. This time around he is just....there. Also, the chemistry between Jake and Neytiri is non existend.

- Lack of memorable action scenes:

terminator2-t1000.gif
terminator-terminator2.gif
terminator2-judgement-day.gif
the-abyss-abyss.gif
aliens-exosuit-ripley.gif
arnold-youre-fired.gif
titanic.gif
terminator-tech-noir.gif
1572922650799.gif

I beg your pardon? no memorable action scenes?
Well, the film is one visual feast for the senses from start to finish. The action is awesome and miles ahead or every marvel movie/ transformers/ fast and the furious bullshit! And yet in the end I somehow missed "THE ONE" ....the one scene which stays in your memory forever. The finale is beautifully filmed and exciting, but doesn't compare to Cameron's own blockbusters like Terminator 2, Avatar 1, Aliens! Again, go and see the movie, you wont be dissapointed. But you can tell this movie ha been split up thus it somehow lacks the final punch i needed to put it in my top Cameron movies of all time!

In conclusion, I can say that the film still blew me away and I would like to see it 2-3 more times in cinemas! It's a spectacle, a feast for the senses and you forget the world around you for a moment. I want to see more of Pandora, more of Jake's family, and hopefully more of Pandora's flora and fauna.
The story is simple, which is both a curse and a blessing. The first film followed Jake's journey through Pandora. In the second film, Cameron has to introduce many new characters who, like Jake, are thrown into a new situation and thus experience new sides of Pandora....again.
As a result, we as viewers also get to know new parts of the world, which is just beautiful to look at. However, the film loses the linear focus of the first Avatar film and I don't exactly know who the main character of Avatar - The way of water really is? ...I bet it is Pandora itsel. ;)

7/10 right now...but i have to see it again. Maybe i will change my mind and give it an 8/10 and I'm sure the final trilogy will be a beautiful, self-contained work of art. Cant wait to see it again!

Granted, I never saw Avatar 1 in theatres so maybe the giant screen and THX sound would had helped. I saw it at home. But I'd toss it into the million other sci-fi CGI films. Zero interest to watch it a second time. It's really just a big Pixar film but geared to adults more compared to kids cartoon flicks. If someone loves CGI with crazy colours, they'll love the film. The CGI wasnt even great. 2009 isn't modern day tech but the animations in some of those scenes were awful. The most predictable story too.

I'll watch Avatar 2 when it comes to a streaming service or if family decides to watch it at the theatre and I join them. But given the film is a very flash over substance kind of movie I dont expect Avatar 2 to be leagues better than the first film aside from the graphics will obviously be better being 2022.

I heard Chris Gore describe it as a few notches below Avatar 1 so it might strongly depend on how much you liked the first one.
