I started off making shorts for fun with iMovie back in highschool, since then I've moved onto Final Cut Pro and have stuck with it since. I'm going to to have to work on an Avid editing system though for a job and I just wanna ask if anyone knows how they compare and how big of a jump would it be? I know Avid is industry and all, but I've heard that it's archaic and has limited compositing abilities.

We have two Avids at work, Avid Express and Avid Newscutter.

Newscutter owns over all other non-linear editing software, but is very very hard to learn.

Avid Express is great as well, but not as versatile as Final Cut Pro.

All Non-linear software is basically the same, you just have to learn new commands and such.

Xpress can run on a PC, so rendering has the possibility of being much faster due to lower hardware costs.

Xpress is versatile enough, and this is coming from a MAC supporter.
