Avowed has pronouns

And character having genders irks you so much you'd skip a game because of it?
Having genders? Don't play stupid, you know just as well as I do that putting the pronouns on display goes way beyond "having genders".

If signaling their political correctness is so important to them then whatever. I don't like that, think is clown behavior, and I'll respond by not buying the game.

I'd argue that it is meaningless in Demon's Souls. I mean, even your character's name is meaningless, as it is never used in the game. The issue is in games where gender is obviously used, but intentionally mislabeled. For example, Dragon Quest III used A/B, but throughout the game, items and characters clearly refer to these as being a man or woman.

This is the same. It could say "man" or "male", but instead shoehorns the very modern "he/him". Imagine watching a movie set in Ancient Rome and someone announces his pronouns. It's jarring and completely unnecessary.

Nah dude, I'm pissed I couldn't squeeze my man boobs into that female armor. As soon as I saw that I dropped it. Fuck DS locking me out of armors cause I got a dick.<-- That is what everyone is doing with Avowed until we find out how involved this is. It's an option until they throw it in our faces like Veilguard did, I am holding my rage inside.

Ugh, it just sets the tone huh
This. Many games have and will have pronouns, it's just the times we live in. Make it a choice during character creation and then forget about it. This "in your face" bullshit does not bode well for the rest of the game's design decisions.

Will it be relevant to the experience?

Or will it only be relevant during character creation?

You should ask yourself this question before putting any more thought into this.

Drifters like Grummz literally live for this bullshit, so they want you to care. But should you?

I mean, if it doesn't have pronouns for my body type 1 character how am I going to know to select between lesbian scissoring or gay power bottoming in my romance dialog choices? That is why pronouns are so important in these situations.
I love this comment 😂

I mean, if it just said "Male" instead of "(He/Him)" in OP's screenshot, it would look just like every other RPG released in the last 30 years while conveying approximately the same information.

yes, and saying "mommy is pregnant" or "I fucked your mom and came inside her at the right time" also convey approximately the same information, but I bet people would look at you differently depending on which one of them you said to your 5yo kid 🤣

one is a normal thing to say, and the other is one that only mentally challenged people would say.
same here. a normal person would say "this is a male character", while a mentally challenged one would say "this character's pronouns are He/Him"

The mere presence of pronouns doesn't necessarily annoy me. Honestly if someone from sweet baby said "alright we'll stop neutering every story and character's writing, and we'll stick to character designs that someone other than us wants to play...but we would really like to keep the option for people to choose pronouns" I'd take that deal easily.

There's such a thing as a happy medium and pronouns on their own seems like a reasonable compromise.

I'll reserve judgement, and do a barv if companions start introducing themselves as gender fluid or if dialogue options are limited to being three responses that all mean the same thing.

To be clear, I'm not trying to normalize or rationalize their decision to use pronouns here. I'm just saying I'm baffled by their decision to make this text field have pronouns instead of genders. But, I guess that'll make the purple hair people happy.

How'd that work out for dragon age?

Oh right, it didn't.
They can go the way of BG3 - and leave it purely in the character creation menu, and it will not affect the dialogues and history in any way.
Or they can go the way of DAV - and all this will go to the dialogues and history of the game.

As we understand, the second option is much worse, and if they choose it, then we really have problems. Here, the situation is just a little worse because Outer Worlds was already slowly leaning in this direction, so here they can go into this topic even more.

Well that's one way to kill your hype. I assume you can give your male character she/her pronouns, why else is it there?
Anyway now we know western previews and some reviews can't be trusted. IGN, Kotaku, Eurogamer, who else?

Hogwarts Legacy and BG3 both had pronouns. It's irrelevant to the actual quality of the game. The game will be bad or good depending on other factors that matter far more.
Is Avowed / Pillars of Eternity a strong enough property to shrug off loss of sales from people that are potentially turned off by pronouns and forced DEI content?

God I don't fucking care about pronouns, it can be in the game or not, as long as I enjoy the game I don't care. ÍThis whole grift and bullshit from Grummz is tiring. They'll immediately turn a corner once the game is successful and pretend they never tried to brigader against the game
Nah.

Communists can fuck off.

not seen anything before release to make me want to buy, i'm interested to see how much of the non fantasy stuff etc is in the game now, after release to make me REALLY! not want to buy lol, although it's just another 1 now at this point.

yup, which is why it is unacceptable in a fantasy game. it's extremely immersion breaking because it is entirely based on modern political nonsense.

hey, maybe this will be restrained only to the English version. even the German version of Concord for example didn't have pronouns. there they literally just replaced it with "Male" (Männlich) etc.

In February my pronouns will be Henry/of Skalitz, but I am still gonna try out Avowed later, moronic leftist stupidity or not. First person RPGs are too rare not to.

It features a space station of virtuous communist female engineers called The Groundbreaker that stands as a lone beacon of fairness and righteousness in opposition to the evil male capitalists of the galaxy, so I don't think pronouns are its main issue one way or another.
And it had Parvati, the only decent and genuine human being in the entire galaxy. Her companion quest was all about how she had a crush on that female engineer lady, but Parvati is an asexual lesbian so she's nervous that nobody would accept an asexual relationship.

So your job is to encourage her and help her prepare to ask the engineer lady on a date. Then they have their date and
everything goes perfectly fine, she is A-OK with the idea of a sexless relationship, and they're going to have a second date.
Would've been a pretty lame companion quest in any RPG, but it felt especially out of place in Outer Worlds, with it's unbearably cynical tone where everyone (except Parvati) is either some soulless corporate automaton or a heartless rich sociopath.

not surprised at all.................

I was told awhile back that that's how the US is right now, an obvious man with big beard can get asked what he identify as in a job interview as if that's normal.
I think US devs need to chill when pushing out that idea to a global audience because some of us think that's plain lunacy.

If they were smart they'd just patch this garbage in a month after release.

Thankfully they aren't that smart.

Every time a gamer says "no thanks" to a game the next time is SO much easier. When I was younger I wanted to buy every AAA game that came out. Today? We check for bullshit first. Not buying and watching the thing tank can be just as much fun.

Bon Voyage, Avowed!

This shit is soul crushing.

I honestly think the industry is moving past pronoun bullshit (how many more flops do they need) and it won't be long until this nonsense is removed from these kinds of charts, but there's a dev pipeline that needs to be cleared first.

Tough luck, Avowed. You already looked mid as hell and this isn't helping.

Pronouns are EVEN MORE necessary in a fantasy game. How the fuck am I supposed to know if this Orc I'm talking to is a male or a female?
Stop bitching about nothing, guys. Just enjoy the games

Didn't know people were that stupid to care about Orc pronoums in a fantasy game. This is what Gen Z brainrot feels like.

Is Avowed / Pillars of Eternity a strong enough property to shrug off loss of sales from people that are potentially turned off by pronouns and forced DEI content?
No idea. It depends on how the rest of the game stacks up. If it's a really enjoyable game then it should be fine.

I mean it's not that crazy - everyone has a preferred pronoun and in modern business you aren't always dealing with names that you are familiar with.
"Can you tell Haiyan that he needs to get working on that proposal"
"Haiyan is a woman"
