Avowed |OT| Is an oath worth the weight of a crown?

i'm done with garden and holy shit this game is goated
I WAS ABLE to side with lodwyn and I DID and companions became bitter against me and left me! man this is peak ROLE PLAYING. dialogue here was INCREDIBLE, I felt their resentment towards me even without the need of elaborate cutscenes or acting

can't wait to see how it will all unfold now

it's so refreshing to be truly alive in the game's world, to be able to actually make damning choices. there's something so satisfying about it

LEAVE ME ALL YOU WANT! I HAVE MY OWN!

I like how the random troll you help is there to help you in the end (no matter your alignment)
like how I spared belanna, and she was there as well. great attention to detail
I did spare her and I did get rid of dreamscourge by killing Sapadal. she probably won't be a zombie but she's still not fixed of course

edit: it's done

I got the EXACT finale I'd like to get

8/10

Credits Roll-I finished it.
3.2 days of playing on PC gamepass. 74 hours?
I spent way too much time exploring and trying to color in all the maps.
I managed to find all the Totum pieces going out of the way places. Some well-hidden way off the beaten path.

I liked the main story with your character being an foreign envoy while also meddling solving everyone's different and contradicting issues.
Also, the story changed based on the decisions made.
yamaci17 yamaci17 had a very different outcome than I did. :)
I do regret how I handled Yatzli.
I think all my patience dealing with Sapadal wore me out so much that when Yatzli started asking for my opinion on what she should do with her life, I got dismissive and picked the Garden doing research all on her own. That wasn't a good outcome, I think Yatzli was the only one that pushed for me to make the choice for her, as the others got a better ending. :(

Sapadal was interesting, A cute little puppy that keeps peeing on everything in the house. As time went on, I really started to think it needed to be taken to a shelter or put down. I ended up saving the little puppy. But I'm not cleaning up after it anymore.

Overall I'm giving the game a 7.5. C+
Game consisted of 5 reskinned maps that were very different in looks, but all felt the same on playing.
I spent too much time upgrading items. Enchanting weapons was pointless.
I would find (Just listen to the twinkling sound effect) every chest, bag, dead guy on the map to loot and it was almost always upgrade materials.
I got pretty good doling out the damage with all kinds of spells one after another, then switching to sword when they got up in my face.

I do have complaints with the lack of enemy variety. And the smallness of the map was kind of silly just walking 10 feet and the game giving the Drum sound and a new area discovered. Then turning around slightly and getting the drum sound again in a different area. It made exploring kind of cramped. Odd complaint I know, but they packed in the discoveries.

I do hope they make more games in this world (pillars of eternity) I did enjoy this.

Nothing too major on the roadmap and no DLC, but new patch will clear all map fog once most of the map has been explored (and clear fog from cities too). That was my biggest pet peeve (that could realistically be addressed).
That is a small thing but honestly will make a huge difference. It was a little odd how frequently you had to toggle the map to try maxing it out, which I did.
Would be nice to also display the fog on the minimap as an option so you know which parts you haven't seen.

nice improvements for my future replay. new game plus will be a welcome addition (in future)
i will definitely replay this later, this time as a friend to the companions. i wished it had photo mode already but at least i could hide the hud

Haven't played Avowed, but holy shit do I hate map fog in every fucking game that has it. Just show me the map and let me explore, showing only the small ring around the player on the map does the opposite of encourage me to explore.

ahh man i can see your perspective and respect it too
i actually remember liking map fog a lot in skyrim... not knowing how big the map could be, and not having the map to guide me to go somewhere and instead actually randomly go and find places
i liked that in avowed too
best would be to make it a option best of both worlds then for everyone :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

In Skyrim it wasn't so bad, cause when you for example got to The Rift, it would get rid of the fog in the entire Rift area, and you'd just have to find the individual locations yourself. But if you had to walk over every inch of The Rift to get rid of all of the fog (like most other games) that would be ass.

It's a fairly big update going by the full patch notes.

I like this:
——
World Reactivity Improvements

  • Arrows will now fall naturally and hit the ground.
  • Water now reacts with splashes and ripples when players enter it or fire weapons into it.
——

I didn't know they worked on these things. I hope they do more on this, how little the world and objects and npcs reacts to what you're doing are the big downsides in this game for me.

The game does so many things so damn well.

Off the top of my head, the mantle/climbing feels like the best I've ever seen in a first person game.

Gonna replay it when new game plus is in ! Was waiting on that. Tons of weapons you get late game that you don't even have a chance to toy with.
Why in the world does it take so long to get to photo mode though? I feel like that's an easy one.

I'm constantly just stopping and just looking at these incredible visuals.

Game is gorgeous so much of the time..!

Highly underrated IMO

I've mentioned it before in this thread, but I think we'll see a lot of threads in many years from now talking about how underrated this game is and how everyone shat on it when it came out
Agree completely. It was attacked for what amounted to nothingburger really. Loved the game.

Nice, makes me really wanna play it. After i finish Oblivion Remaster i will get to Avowed.
Cool. I even think that Starfield and Horizon lover Topher Topher liked it. So take that for what it's worth.

I think the best thing about this game is just how detailed it is. If you go exploring, you are usually rewarded with an item.

I tried third person for about 15 minutes, and I hated it. I feel like you lose the close up amazing visuals when the camera is so far back.

I love that my blue bro Kai is voiced by the dude that also played Garrus in the Mass Effect series.

Very fitting.

I want this guy to be my bro in blue in every RPG!

i'm sorry to say I antagonized and taunted and ridiculed your bro at every chance I've gotten
he's a good person though in the end, i was just being a bad person. you will enjoy his personal story in the 3rd chapter and the eventual culmination in the 4th chapter

I've been pretty positive in my conversations with him. Guy always seemed like a stand up dude in the wrong place at the wrong time. Got to respect the guy for taking my lifeless body to a Dursley after being killed. If that's not respect/loyalty, I don't know what is.

What a weird game, on one hand, the combat is technically great. But enemies either stand and throw spells or rush you. It makes for messy fights, when you fight even powered enemies, you need to run non-stop to not get crowded.

The cities have way too many quests and long dialogues, you get bogged down talking to everyone for hours.

The world is beautiful. Exploration is great.

The companions are poorly written and try to joke when things are serious, they have awkward comments.

The lore is deep, and it's quite interesting with the gods and magic, but require too much reading. I like to learn in-game and not through lore books.

I like how you can learn spells from the books and use them without the book.

But the spells don't have enough effect, I just powered up my beginning spell that shoots three magic missiles and its super good. Its better just to use that then waste magic on the expensive ones.

The first area is stunning, the second area is gloomy grey and ugly.

Solid game that needed a few tweaks to reach truly great. There is just too much stories and quests that fills up with mediocre storylines and back and fourth questlines. But overall it's still solid.

I've finally jumped into this game and after ~10 hours... holy shit is it good.

It's definitely one of the best games of 2025. Beautiful, runs great, feels polished, great combat, vast world that feels very alive, crazy variety of weapons and approaches to various gameplay scenarios, interesting lore and story... I'm just having a total blast with it. I don't understand how the review average is only 80.
