Awesome Games Done Quick 2016: January 3rd - 10th.

I would have given the competition a shot if it didn't start at 7 AM on a Saturday morning.

Regardless, last year's TAS game seemed more interesting (the VVVVVV clone).

Can anybody who has a clue explain wtf is being said here?

I guess "NES Open Golf Cart" is speedrunner code for porn or something?

The people behind GDQ apparently have a bizarre aversion to golf games being on stream. Big Jon wanted to speedrun the game for GDQ but was rejected multiples.

That was like the one of the worst genres they could've picked for viewers to learn how the game works in a few minutes, let alone watch 4 playthroughs at the same time. Even they had trouble knowing who was ahead at all.

Correct. The idea wasn't bad, but they should have used something more obvious.

So I'm catching up in the thread and wanted to make a few comments. First Werster is bae. Second, how did the Pokemon Yellow run turn out? I dont normally watch Gunnar even tho I know he holds the record.

Third, Was the MK8 run really that bad? I was waiting to see that and if that guy really did ruin it im upset.

Same with rwhitegoose

both have put in requests to play golf on stream and rejected endlessly

Mario Golf race was denied and so was the NES game.

What would happen if someone would make a Zelda clone for a similar race... but then it would suddenly feature golf?

Yellow run was rad, the pokemon glitch exhibition was stellar as well, watch that too.

MK8 was... well the commentary was not great, lots of interrupting and uh's going on. They could have had a better speaker. Run itself was good.

Gotta keep speedrunning an eSport, so it can't mix with sports via a sports game!

Or something dumb.

They want things on stream that'll be interesting, and golf is so boring that people probably won't even watch a speedrun of video game golf.

Holy crap, that Zelda II run!! Hard to follow but really cool. Wonder how long it takes to set a TAS like that up.

It's built off of years of TAS progress.

This is my bet too... unless they break the game so spectacularly that that in itself becomes a show (see Family Fued).

TAS block is so good. I love glitch runs, but this takes it to next level.
Also donation started pouring in really quickly, I think it was at 600k ten hours ago and now already over 900k. I guess they will even hit 1m at this pace.

They've had worse games and certainly far less charismatic/entertaining people running those games than Big Jon or RWhiteGoose.

Based on seeing Jon run NES Golf Open, there's an element of improvisation and adaptation if something goes wrong, something I can't really say was something I felt for the MK64 2p1c that happened a couple of hours ago. That and Big Jon is a hype generator on his own, dude is great.

I'd have rather seen somebody race or speed run a golf game than watch that stuff like that one GDQ's Tomba2 (even though it gave us a hilariously akward moment), or several boring runs this go round.

lol

Blowing into the cartridge always work

I'm pretty sure Big Jon could make a snail moving across the table one of the most entertaining runs of the event. Dude is hype given physical form.

I love his stream, it's soo chill.
