Awesome Games Done Quick 2016: January 3rd - 10th.

Because it's bad "television".

I would be interested to watch the TAS people sit down and talk about what they did and how they did it, showing it step-by-step with detailed explanations. I'm not interested in watching a rushed and disorganized exhibition with a pitch out to Twitch chat to break things.

Give 'em a six hour block in the middle of a Tuesday night, not 30 minutes in the run-up to the big runs of the marathon.

They don't stick it in a bad timeslot because it's a unique part of the event. There's like 6 and a half days worth of speed runs; if you miss one there's still like 50 others to see. There's only 1 TASBot section, so if you miss it, you're screwed.

I assume most people want to see it considering they've been bringing it back for a while now, so naturally, it gets a prime time slot.

But it's word wide event. It's midnight here right now. It's hard to to time every segment for every county.

That's exactly the point.

It's midnight there right now. Midnight Sunday.

Everywhere in the world right now, it's either Saturday or Sunday. This is basically the closest you can get to "global" primetime: Saturday afternoon/evening. This is the closest you can get to a time block everyone can have a chance to catch regardless of timezone.

That's why I said Tuesday/weeknight.

Why is everything a race this year?

1) races are fun
2) when you have a "big" game that is run by a lot of people, there are often multiple qualified runners worth putting on the big stage
3) the "big" games have been done so many times at these events that unless there's some crazy new tech involved, you kind of need something other than a single runner to make things interesting.

But I liked this segment and thought it shoudl be primetime :/
YSG was happy, the audience was happy, twitch chat was happy.
So I dont' t see the problem.

Look, they're only aloud to run a segment in a prime time slot if every single person in the world will enjoy it. It doesn't matter that they do the same thing at every event and it always goes down well.

Closing in on that cool mill

To be fair it was good, but that was pretty much because of it being mostly LTTP. Whenever they tried to do newer stuff I had DS game flashbacks and curled up into a ball metroid style.

The wall merging was one of the best gimmicks in a Zelda game ever.

You realize recording a TAS involves hundreds of hours of input, advancing a frame, observing, reverting, rerecording thousands and thousands of times for every minute that's running at full time, right? They showed an example of the process once year on Megaman and it took like five minutes to load into the first stage. Trying to explain everything would take the entire week and be horribly boring to watch. Fortunately you can go to their site and see that info you're looking for!

Honestly the SMB3 shenanigans have been the highlight of the event to me so far barring
Pokemon ACE putting that Mew under the truck
. So it made perfect sense to put them there from my viewpoint.

The things that get shoved to the non-prime time are unproven, not well known games, mostly - or ones with higher popularity in EU, I guess? I really liked some of these.

I mean, where do they get any sort of meaningful data on whether or not people enjoy it and want to see it come back in that time slot? They check the reactions on the internet.

I'm casting my internet vote for "don't do this on the last day, please".

You're free to throw yours in for "please more TAS" or whatever suits you.

it makes sense to do this specifically as a race since it's twice the chance someone actually gets a good run. This run is not easy.

Because races are an easy way of adding some spice for people who have seen some games speedran a lot. And guess what, by now a lot of people have seen some games speedran a lot.

Okay that's fair.
I was just thinking these races tend to not be that close and I end up just focusing on one screen anyway. But that's just me I guess.

They can be hit or miss because it's easy to get desynced but when they are close, it's awesome. Check out the Rockman 4 BCAS, Blaster Master and Super Mario Kart races.

That definitely happens in plenty of them, but I think it's cool when a bunch of runners get the exposure, which might help give them the drive to keep going, increase their personal stream viewers, etc.

Hell, some of the "losers" of races at these events are WR holders. That sort of highlights how competitive these games are. .

tasbot? more like … shazbot…

like I said, this is more to double the chance of getting a proper run than anything else.

True. With some of the harder runs, the races are a chance to actually see some/all of the harder tricks completed.

Also, the best moment of the Tyson race for me was Zallard's fist pump when Sinister finished Tyson off as the "loser."
