Awesome Oddworld Interview - NOT quitting games. Also sheep better than cows

wow. and a rare Revolution mention from an actual game developer. But it seems even the developers know about as much as we do :/ Shouldn't people be working on games for it by now if its coming next year? well, good interview

"We've developed some exciting ideas for next gen and these are definitely aimed at pushing the next-gen potential," he explained. "Yet, building for next gen is going to be much more expensive than building for this gen, and that's part of the reason we are seeking new models for the development process. What's clear when we created these next gen concepts they were equally strong as movie possibilities, and thus we wanted to be able to pursue these options as well. Next-gen IP development, in our opinion, is really Massively Multi-Media Property development, of which games are one outlet. I haven't seen many concrete details on the Nintendo Revolution."

Good interview and good news.

I wonder how many of the ex-OI staff would/could be brought back to work on a future game project, though.

Haha, those questions are ace.

I'm evidently a little behind on my industry buzzwordisms, what exactly is a "Massively Multi-Media Property"?

The interview has a "I'll accept more money hats if given so i'm backtracking a little just in case they come in..." kind of vibe :lol

like Spiderman the games and Movies
Pokemon the game and card series and tv show
something that branches out into more than just one medium

Either that, or a "I woke up this morning with a Horse's head in my bed with a nice note from John Riccitiello" kind of vibe.

"We're not quitting the games business -- we're just not making games anymore!" :lol

Developing IPs doesn't make them a part of the game business more than anyone else who licenses a property. Is Marvel Comics in the "games industry"?

Seems like they are trying to do some heavy damage control since the press has made it look like they pissed at EA, the industry's biggest user of prepackaged IPs. I'm pretty sure that they are pissed, but they just don't want to be publically perceived as such. "Yeah, so they yanked all our marketing, put our game out at a time when the market was incredibly slow, and left us in a position where we can't even make games anymore -- NO HARD FEELINGS!"

I'm thinking that maybe they are looking to make a game, tv show and/or movie all at the same time and are thinking that they can get a better finacial as far as their development costs are concerned.
It might work. The Oddworld characters are pretty cool. I could see a cartoon about them dong well.

I had to share this with you, from an email from Lorne last last night:

Lorne Lanning said:
OOOPS! Stefan, please note this correction as I just spotted it. (DOH! Man, I hope I caught this in time.)

In my response, my text said...

"That's where we're headed and that definately does rule out involvement in videogame productions."

It was a typo and should have said...

"That's where we're headed and that definately does NOT rule out involvement in videogame productions."

Lorne

That made me chuckle!
:)

"I want to point out that we never said we are quitting the game business," bellows Lanning. "What we said is that we are closing down internal game production at the San Luis Obispo studio.

Beside the fact that bellows is at best awkward - how does one exactly bellow over an email?

It was sent as capitalised text you nitpicking cunt.
Is that really the best you could come up with?

I love folder dearly since he's the only one that hates Rockstar more than I do, but he's got to spend less time baiting the gaming forum and more time posting pics of his lady to OT.

Bating? Bah! Pot and kettle! ;-)
And if I go to E3, you'll get to see Mrs Folder in the flesh running about the show in a SPOnG-branded outfit of some sort. She might even be giving out gifts if I can can get some kind of tacky branded shit printed up in time.

Kick the shit out of him, Folder!

Fighting in LA is a bad idea. As well as having questionable Karma possibilities, going to jail is never good.

In fact, I'm surprised someone from the UK (aside from the 2003 deportees) has never been banged up. Given that we export our drinking/violence culture to E3 every year, it's actually quite astonishing that it's never gone wrong!

Yup that usually happens at immigration.

Nah. You've still got arseholes, but they're all in Bush's cabinet.

Dude. You bringing Erica with you to E3? She'll fucking love it!

I say he should spend more time making up crazy rumors and trying to emulate British game journalist Pat Garratt from CVG.com. Garratt once wrote a story about how he attended a press conference in Japan where Hideo Kojima made a speech -- but the funny thing was there was no press conference, and Garratt certainly wasn't in Japan.

When caught with his pantaloons down, Garratt blamed the story on a translation error. Classic.

I've got Pat on MSN now. I'll ask him about that :)

And here he is:

Must've been from his 'evil Pat' days.

It happened when Daily Radar (the U.S. version) was still publishing. I remember one of my coworkers at the time, the guy who ran the Sony portion of the Radar, going on and on about it.
