This is the first confirmation we have regarding the custom chips for "PC's".

From their latest earnings slides:

She says developing console, handheld PC etc before going into the part about signing partnership with AMD.

I thought this was already known.

Did we know the "PC" was going to be a custom AMD chip? Or was that not just for the console?

The PC bit was spoken before the lead-in to announcing the AMD partnership. I thought it was always gonna be the case since that video, since the Ally are also AMD devices.

The Ally doesn't use a custom chip though.

Which makes me question - is there a different Xbox handheld that we don't know about yet?

They did say that the dedicated Xbox handheld has been shelved 'for now', not that they've canceled the project entirely.

Maybe 2027, 2028 ?

No chance when there is no SoC in development that we know of, unlike Magnus (Xbox Next), Orion (PS6) and Canis (PS6P).

Did Microsoft themselves confirm that or was it just rumours from one of the usual lackeys?

This seems pretty clear cut, in that there will be custom chips for all 3 and that they are in development.

If I remember correctly the Series S SoC was kept under wraps until pretty late in the day.

AFAIK it was both started and ended in Windows Central news pieces, MS officially never announced working on a handheld.

I've just seen that it "ended" via an "announcement" from Jez, but Phil himself was the one who seemed to confirm it's existence beforehand:

They can have the best tech money can buy but without games all that tech is worthless…..thats currently biggest issue with Xbox.

In that case I guess a 2027, 2028 AMD chipset based dedicated handheld doesn't sound too far-fetched.

It almost sounds like they and Sony are looking at the same road map, a powerful set-top device and a handheld to go with it.

Their gaming release pipeline in the last 2~ years has been incredible. Not sure what else we can realistically expect from them.

Microsoft should try to give exclusivity a try: it may find that they can sell more systems that way.

I still think it's hilarious that (because they bit off more than they could chew with the ABK merger), Microsoft gave up on even trying to make their Bethesda games exclusive before seeing if they'd have an impact.

Does "and handhelds" means devices like the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X?
That microsoft plans new consoles is great, because Sony need a worthy competitor or they'll become too arrogant.
Just compare their effort during the ps3 generation with today.

Next gen is going to be ASS

with all of these companies focusing on handhelds, its going to make the lowest common denominator a fucking handheld

Does this mean Xbox is back?
What does Xbox even mean?
To me, "Xbox" is a console, designed by Microsoft, called "Xbox".
I don't know what it means at Microsoft, and their gaming division makes more money than ever.
And who will buy the new Xbox consoles? Only some Americans.

Changing their marketing strategy to Xbox on PC says a lot about what they're really doing and aiming for. That's basically the 3rd place if you categorize all PC games,

1-PC
2-Emulators
3-Xbox on PC

Edit: I can't fucking post that. You know what. Ignore this. It's been a long day blokes. A long day. May Eckobo-Kun live long and prosper. I'm excited to see what they actually announce but I'm tired of them expecting a hip hip hurray for announcing that they aren't going to end their console business. Show us what you got, I don't think they have a device that can stand up to the scrutiny of the modern console market. Any one small thing wrong, including price, and people hate you. It sucks.

I wonder if they will choose another dumb name like Series or if they'll just go with Xbox 4 like normal people would
