I agree that in some cases of a game's reveal that might be true, but in this precise case I think it's wrong.
What do we have here :
1) Opinions of shaken up fans (NOT an insult) who are still under the daze of their favorite series taking such a twist, judging only on screens and 2 videos.
2) Opinion of the press who has actually seen more gameplay footage, has had the game explained to them (let's face it, quite a fair share of the haters didn't care to read what the game was exactly about after seeing vehicles in the trailer), and more importantly, played it themselves.
If you're talking about the "Rare don't fuck up with your franchises because as big fans of them we really don't like that", then it's no use, because the Gregg guy called it. He knew there was going to be a harsh reaction.

How do you think the Banjo hardcore will react to the changes?
Mayles: I think the generation of players that have played Banjo before are probably going to be shocked to start with. They're probably going to look at it and say, 'Hang on a sec, this isn't the Banjo I was expecting. What have you done? You've ruined it!'
But then hopefully, in a very short space of time, they'll be able to see what we've done and like it. You're never going to be able to change people's opinions of the old games and how they felt at the time. Obviously you're going to get a certain amount of rose-tinted glasses looking back on the old game being this wonderful masterpiece and nothing was ever wrong with it.
