First day purchase for me. I think it looks great. I never played the others, and frankly if I did, so what? I don't think it would take way my anticipation for this.
And for those of you crying over the mario decapitation thing....
Express your outrage to someone outside the net, like say a cute girl on the street. Maybe she will share in your complete outrage and you will make a connection with her. Then a friendly relationship will grow out of the mutual respect and admiration you share for Miyamoto. In a short time your mutual fondness could blossom into something beyond mere friendship. Every time you see each other, it starts to become the best moment of your day. When you have to part, it becomes the worst. You both cannot stop thinking about each other, and when you are hopping planets in SMG, all you can concentrate on is her to the detriment of your platforming abilities, as you are killed by the same maniacle goomba mushrooms guys you easily thwart every other time.
You decide to ask her out officialy. She accepts. You take her out to see Speed Racer and eat some Applebees. Everything is going smooth. You take her home for a rousing game of Wii sports. Giggling away with each other after a fun round of boxing, you both collapse on the couch and hit pause. After a few moments of awkward silence, you speak softly to each other, giving one another compliments. Silence fills the room again. Slight smiles disappear as more serious looks hit each others faces. And you see something in each others eyes...
..a longing.
A longing that you want to be with this person so bad, that every moment in your life was just a step towards this ultimate person who thinks and share like you. Who makes you feel more alive than ever before. Who justifies your existence, and console preference.
You slowly draw near each other. Both your eyes begin to close and you are ready for a kiss so hot it will blaze the heavens with the force of a thousand suns exploding.

And its all thanks to a some non existent little italian plumber being poked fun at in a video game.*

Coming into this thread with nothing really to say is just a waste of your time. If you do not like the game because of the new direction that Rare is taking it, then it's simple do not buy it. Go back and replay the old ones for your enjoyment. I felt the same way you did at first and after a day of thinking I'll give the new game a shot. What's the point in bashing a game you yourself haven't played yet? A lot of the previews and interviews make the game sound really good, so we'll just have to reserve judgment until it comes out or until they release a demo on XBL.

They're not a small part from what I read. If you do not want to use vehicles you really do not have to because the make the game easier and faster to beat so instead of spending 30 hours on the game you end up beating it in 20 hours. I think its more the press not wanting to air it, because Nintendo is already very finicky with the press (as far as who they let see what and when etc).
Nintendo could care less..you don't lose sleep at the top of a mountain.
Personally.. I say the blowing up of 8-bit Mario (the archetype of all platforming characters and their functionality) is a brilliant and intentional metaphor for doing away with limiting a character to pre-defined abilities.
Media Molecule made a similar gesture when they revealed LBP, but was more subtle about it with the whole blatant 1up mushroom thing.
Stuff like that is great for the industry at this point, I think.
