Batman Beyond season 2 is the worst DCAU related media I've ever watched

I just finished Batman Beyond for the first time, and my god, season two was just plain awful. Seasons one was good, season three was OK for the most part, but season two was just terrible. It dropped the overarching rivalry between Blight and Terry (which it never bothered to pick up again, even in season three), it introduced new villains almost every episode only to forget they existed the very next episode, and it focused way too much on meaningless high school stories.

I've watched Batman:TAS, Superman:TAS, JL and JLU, parts of Teen Titans and Static Shock, and nearly every DC animated movie there is (even the ones that came out before the new WB Premiere line of movies).

But Batman Beyond season two is just the worst. This image I think sums it up best:

Why is Batman carrying a surprised egg on his backpack? Because of some bullshit high school thing of course!

(Tangentially related: in the Batman Beyond movie and in the JLU crossover there are these enemies--a scarecrow type guy, a hyena, two Harley Quinn-esque twins that can clone themselves, among others--that are always treated as established villains to Terry. They're never in the show though--is there something I'm missing where they get introduced?)

I liked that episode. It was goofy, but funny. They just pushed the high school angle too much, dropping Bruce for Max as mission control.

you take that back right this moment.

But seriously every show has had its stinkers and gems. I love me batman beyond, loved it then, loved it now, love the comic.

Nothing is worse than that Batman Beyond episode they did in JLU. You know, the one that revealed his true origin story.

This is by far the dumbest thing in fiction I've ever seen.

It's bad, sure, but it's still better than most of BB season two if you get over the whole dumb idea behind it. At least here it looked more like they had to do something completely dumb and tried to make the most of it. BB season two is them just giving up on trying to make a good Batman show.

But seriously, I liked what they were doing with season one and the direction they started to go. I still don't understand why they just dropped Blight for no real reason. They made him so important, he's actually the only villain in the show intro--but then he never appears again after the season one finale. What happened?

I must start reading the comic. Liked the tv show and the comic is drawn by Breyfogle, right? Still the best Batman artist.

Going to have to ask Bruce Timm that, but I assume that it was because it was always supposed to be kid friendly and it got darker then they probably wanted so season 2-3 they went that route and made it more for kids. We still have return of the joker, which of course is way dark, murder, death, kidnapping, torture.

Batman Beyond was never that great it's the weakest 2d batman cartoon and the weakest cartoon to come out of bruce timm.

quality of episode where pretty random some great but a lot of okay episodes and the terry was lame.

I loved Batman Beyond, but it's not really a Batman cartoon. Terry is kind of an idiot compared to Bruce. Let go of the "Batman" in the title and it's a good "junior superhero" cartoon.

I think the eggbaby episode was their attempt to make Terry more like Peter Parker. Like stupid random things happening in his personal life that were affecting his super hero life. I remember reading an issue of Spider-Man way back where Peter bought a hat for his aunt, got waylaid by the Vulture or someone on his way to give it to her, and most of the issue was him trying to retrieve the hat while the Vulture tried to kill him. The eggbaby episode is basically the same thing.

You need to watch the intro more closely, Spellbinder, Inque, and the Royal Flush gang are all referenced in it.

Anyway, I think they made Blight too one-dimensional by his last appearance. He was basically a rampaging radioactive monster by the end of the episode, they probably got bored with him and just moved on. Although the episode ends with him at the bottom of the ocean, it would've been fun if they brought him back in giant size....

Your crazy. Epilogue was amazing and neatly tied up the entire DCAU.

Yeah how it tied Batman Beyond and Batman: TAS gave me that special kind of fulfillment in seeing two different series bridged together.

That being said, I couldn't stand the art direction they went with Batman Beyond. The level of detail was horrendous and poorly drawn compared to the glory of the earlier Batman TAS. Then again, the later Batman TAS had a pretty bad quality too so I guess it was to be expected.

Didn't notice the others before because both royal flush and Inque blend in color wise while Spellbinder starts off the theme and I just never made the connection. I noticed Blight early on because it's a stark green contrast to the rest of the intro.

The showrunners dumbed this particular episode down and made it more childish as a cynical ploy to submit it for Emmy consideration.
And guess what: it WORKED. It won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class: Animated Program.

*snip* you watched the movie already.

Batman Beyond always felt more like a Spider-Man show than Batman. I liked it, but it had a bunch of week episodes.

Also, I believe the egg baby episode was the way it was because the creators wanted an emmy and making the most childish episode they could think of was the way to do it.

It did end up winning that Emmy

Wow tons of beyond hate in here, surprising really. At it's best it's as good as BTAS, and even at it's worst it's still damn good.

Batman Beyond is an awesome show and Epilogue was the culmination of my entire childhood spent watching Batman TAS and Beyond, so I'm just not gonna believe any part of it was ever bad ever.

this thread has too many wrong opinions, i can't handle it

people talking shit on epilogue

Max was by far the worst part of Batman Beyond. She was just so damned annoying.

Can't say I was much of a fan of Static Shock either really.

Return of the Joker though, oh god I love that film so much. I can't think of a single thing wrong with it, besides possibly the absence of Amanda 'I'm gonna get shit done' Waller.

Seriously, even after watching it again recently I can see no wrong in it. After spending over 13 years invested in a shared animated universe, I loved seeing it all tied together, even if it was "lol cloning".

Really though, Bruce named his dog Ace (having never Watched that episode), HOLY FUCKING SHIT Ace isn't an arbitrary name (After watching that episode)

*mind blown*

If you can't have fun with the goddamn Egg baby episode, I actually pity you. Like, I'm sorry you take Batman so seriously you can't enjoy a Daisy chain of firecracker gags like that episode. That must be very frustrating

OK, so the 1st episode with Ten, Terry & Dana had broken up at the time. But in her 2nd appearance, Terry straight up cheats on Dana with her & never gets caught. I'm not the only one who found that completely fucked up am I?

How disappointing is it that Terry never hooked up with Maxine?
Some writers pushed for it but Bruce Timm vetoed it. Because obviously Terry & Dana is OTP, despite him completely forgetting she even exists every time Ten is around.

I enjoyed Static, but it was too much after school special. It was targeted to a different audience than the rest of the DCAU.

Beyond is my second favorite DCAU show after JL/U.

This. It's incredible that someone can take issue with such a fun episode.

Anyone reading the comic series? I have and it's been great for a variety of reasons
(my favorite is the alternative universe where Dick and Barbara got married and have a kid; the bitter Dick of Terry's universe is still around though).

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
Nothing is worse than that Batman Beyond episode they did in JLU. You know, the one that revealed his true origin story.

This is by far the dumbest thing in fiction I've ever seen.

Isn't it something retarded like his dad's jizz has Bruce Wayne's sperm in it? I think my brother was trying to tell me that, and I didn't believe him, but then I read about it later.

No, Terry's dad was shootin blanks, so they "took a sample" from him under the pretense they were going to use it for in vitro fertilization with Terry's mom but switched it with Sperm Engineered to be Bruce's Clone. All because Amanda Waller couldn't let the world exist with a Batman.
