Battalion Wars Impressions

Team 17 did the worms games - this is made by kuju. I can neither confirm or deny if any sensible software peeps worked on this tho.. but sensible went pop years ago so its possible some found their way to Kuju

I played this last night at my friends house, and to be honest, I was surprised at how well it was made. The game is really fun, and the graphics and theme of it doesn't really bother me. It still maintains a war-like intensity. There are a lot of different units to control. That means there are a lot of different ways to do things. Replay value. Woo. Plus you get graded after every mission: C, B, A, or S, for Super.

At first it took a bit of time to get used to switching between units, while telling different units to do different things. I was getting pretty worried when the Anti-Air troops were shooting down my helicopters, but I needed those to take out the heavy tanks. I still survived, using the mortar units, and taking in the rifle units in for cover while I destroy spotlights and such. Sounds awesome? It definitely was.

I very much enjoy this game.

I keep getting my ass handed to me on the defend the beach level (number 7?)..

shit! i'm at the beach level too, i keep losing when i should defend the anti-air support, i don't know what to do :(, I usually pick some soldiers and hide'em on the bunkers and keep the rest defending near the flag, but after a few minutes i fail the mission.
Well, at least the beach level is the must fun so far.

Anyone know how long this is? It sounds like fun, but I don't tend to enjoy mission based games that are easy once you 'solve' them, which means this wouldn't be worth buying if the mission count is low.

is this when the gunships are showing up and pummeling you? if so,
you have to quickly run into the base and free the pilots, then you get the fighters and can easily take out the choppers. took me about 7 tries to figure out. :)

Damn, the last level is kicking my ass. At least I think it's the last level, the one with
the three walls you have to break through and then there are two Battlestation thingies inside the stronghold where you have to capture two points?

Who's got tips? I've tried a few times now and my crew gets destroyed right before the last part so I run in there with one infantry dude :(

I'm about 12 missions in so far, including the bonus mission. The game is very intuitive and it plays very well. THe different vehicles all have their own distinct physics and they control well. Very fun game and comanding your units is very easy. It's also a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. Make one wrong command and there goes batallion. Very fun game.

i remember when this game was first revealed at e3 (two years ago?) and people were saying that it sucked and how disappointed they were with it.

it is definitely great to see the developer was able to pull things together like this

That seems pretty accurate to me. A lot of fun. My only complaint is that choosing enemies can occasionally be a pain, and the AI doesn't do anything most the time if you're not directing it.

i was one of its biggest detractors when it first showed up.

"omg not turn based! omg not made by intelligent systems! omg kuju sucks, they haven't made any good games!"

and so on. now i can't wait to play it after all these positive impressions. it has been a slow turn around, but I'm really happy with screens and video i've seen of this game.

I bought it. Looked at the back. 1 player. WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK!

Seriously there is no excuse for this. I loved playing Advance Wars multiplayer. This just sucks, another half assed job from Nintendo. I'm so tempted to return this.

It's nice to see that you didn't even bother playing it before you started hating on Nintendo and Kuju's work on the game. :lol

I know! But dammit this is so frustrating!

Help make sure its a success on GC and we might see sequels. I might buy this now based on the commenth here. Also Looks like the start of a new franchise since Nintendo silently dropped the Advance Wars GC placeholder title and went for BW instead.

Ya guys, give this a 'purchase' so N will give us an online revision on the Cube ----- complete with non-pre-deployed missions, and resource management :)

The game is worth a buy, just outstanding fun and no tacked-on extra/conceptual stuff --- just the solid campaign, and I just keep going back and back againg for those 'S' rankings.

And I do agree, if feels like a modern-day re-invention of Cannon-Fodder (the PC version) -----
If you guys dig BattalionWars you should pick up "Battle-Engine-Aquilla", it's about the only other game this gen that is similar --- It's not as charming, but it has that "Huge RTS campaign, while you just controll a single unit" thing -- and it has some good multiplayer co-op and vs.

But I like this kind of 'RTS' action game --- a single choice at the beginning of a mission can drastically alter the end of a mission.

EDIT:
oh and Prometheus/ANJ from over at the Conceptart.org forums did the cover art and the manual art ------ It would be amazing, if Nintendo crafted an engine that could mimmic this art-style in real-time on the next BattalionWars.

i'm on the fence about getting it, ever need someone to just PUSH you into something?

i think i'll go to EB and ask the GC fanboy clerk what he thinks and let him talk me into it.

OMG I NEED THIS GAME ONLINE FOR REVOLUTION!

Get this game now! It's just great. I love changing units on the fly and issuing orders in the heat of battle. I'm getting destroyed but I'm loving every minute of it. I LOVE the graphic style. There's so much room for this game to grow and the units are very varied in strenghts and capabilities. Not to mention cool looking. I really like the tongue in cheek setting and the over the top characters. This is a suitable war venue for Nintendo and they should expand it into a franchise.

Bring it Nintendo!

Heh, I know you're exaggerating, but these really were the reasons why people were selling the game short. It had nothing to do with the quality or idea of the game.

this game online would be really unfocused. it would only work if you could build buildings and other things.

I have to agree this game is very, very fun. I just wish there was something on the side and not just Campaign (but the missions seem to be diverse enough and fun to replay).

So are there any unlockables after you finish the 20 missions? I'm thinking about giving this a look tonight when I go to Meyers but I don't want to play 20 missions and then be done with it especially if there is no branching or skirmish mode. Damn a skirmish mode would push me over the edge.

There are unlockable missions. You have to score really well in order to get them, I believe.

If you cannot decide after reading the two pages of this thread, I'd say no, and rent first.

I got 50 bucks laying around. Should I pick this up?

It's good. It looks great, it's fun and lighthearted but it's also quite hectic at times. I wouldn't call it fantastic but it is varied in it's approach to the frantic action. I don't regret picking it up, that's for sure.

i wasn't exaggerating :lol

I think it's a great game and really like the difficulty & planning required to succeed (reminds me of the GBA game more than I expected...).

If you think you'd like it, you probably will.

I've played the first four missions so far and I'm enjoying it. Nothing spectacular so far, but it's good fun and I'm glad I got it. I expect the missions will get more complex and it will get better. I like the control scheme. It takes a little getting used to, but it allows you to access and deploy units quickly.

I like the visual style of the game. It doesn't take itself to seriously, which is refreshing.

Why is that?

Don't like it. Gameplay's too shallow. Too much VA. Game's been holding my hand way too much. Just not having fun.

Ironclad: 4 missions in. Probably going to sell the thing in about 2 hours.

Rented thisa game the other day really enjoyed. I'll be picking it up soon. Which kinda pisses me off. I hate renting games that turn out to be games I would like to own. The only complaint is I wish you had a more control of the camera whe it zoomed out. It seemed fine in the up close view but occasional got mixed up when zooming out.

It's completely up to you, but I would just like to say that the game gets much better in a few missions. It gets a lot more complex and the game becomes quite unforgiving. You have to command multiple troops and position them intelligently for getting past the mission in the best manner. Also, you start getting the fun vehichles like Heavy Tanks, Heavy Recons, Artillery and Bombers. I would give it several more missions before you decide to sell it, but like I said, it is completely up to you.

so about 30 minutes into the tutorial missions --- Too bad, mission 6 is when it beefs up.

Anihawk were are you at? I'll be happy to take it off your hands if you happen to be on the Canadian west coast.

I'm on the American west coast (SoCal).

I'll give it another chance in the next hour.

Ani, you should at least try it until mission 5 or 6. It gets pretty challenging here on out. The first 4 mission ARE the tutorial after all.

Mission 4 is near the end of the tutorial section. At this point, you've only been given units like rifle grunts, light recons, and even a bazooka veteran or two. After this tutorial section is over, you start to see all kinds of troops, various veterans like assault, missile and flame thrower veterans. You start to see new vehichles as well like light tanks, heavy recons, and and artillery units. Later into the second campaign is when you get your wings and start to take to the sky. The game gets complex pretty quickly. You have to know which units are good where and which units to keep in the back when the enemy starts rolling out certain units. This bit of strategy is just one part of the fun.

Beat Mission 4. It was alright. I keep on getting my tanks killed or sunk. But I'm sorta getting used to the controls. Hopefully the game scales well in difficulty.
