The controversial Japanese cult classic 'Battle Royale' is set to receive the Hollywood treatment. Director David Fincher ('Se7en,' 'Fight Club') has been tapped by Sony to bring a reworked script to American audiences. "The new script has several thematic differences from the Japanese version," a Sony rep said, "But the main plot and the infamous violence will remain intact." Fincher was unavailable to answer questions. Production is tentatively scheduled to begin in mid 2006.

Found this at SA.

God I hate you, hollywood.

Eh, what does it hurt, and besides, I've enjoyed all of Fincher's movies (well, Alien 3 aside, and you can't really blame him for that one). Hopefully he'll do it justice.

By that logic, shouldn't you hate the japanese film for ruining the book as well?

I'm in hate with them due to their overabundance of "hay let's remake japanese movies :lol"

Can't be any worse than the awful Battle Royale 2.

And Fincher is a good director so I'd be interested in seeing what he does with it.

Hollywood's out of ideas and most Americans would likely be put off by the cultural variations, dubbing, subtitles, etc required to bring the originals over, so Hollywood does what they do best.

What's the deal with Hollywood and their fascination with remaking mediocre japanese films?

Anyway, I guess I'll see this, but only if it's directed by Fincher.

Fincher is a total hack, and this is hardly surprising. The number of asian remakes this year are in the double digits. Hollywood has been stagnant for years(Hollywood, not American filmmaking in general).

I'm betting the fact they will use actors in their early to mid 20s to play the roles of teenagers, and that would be lame.

And there will be tons of zoom effects to show the inner happenings of guns, tree branches, Jared Leto, and anything combustible .

So is it possible this could turn out better than the JP movie? I loved the movie, but a friend that read the book said it was lots better, and they left a bunch of stuff out of the movie...

Yeah, seriously. At least remake some good movies - namely, those which originate from Korea. Actually, I'm sure the Japanese studios & directors don't mind all that cash Hollywood is tossing their way for these remakes. Aside from this BR news, what other recent Japanese films have been remade besides "The Ring" & "The Grudge"?

The American remake of Dark Water comes out this summer, and while the Japanese film isn't new, we saw a completely pointless American remake of Shall We Dance? earlier this year.

Well that movie wasted some time in my life even though I liked the premise, and fincher is pretty damn good. I'll see it.

If the remake is not rated R... no sale.

I wouldn't worry about it not being R-rated. Plus it's David Fincher, which is almost a guarantee of an R in the first place.

I always thought Battle Royale III should be Royale Internationale - where countries settle their disputes by letting their champion youth battle on the world arena.

The ring u.s. was better than the japanese movie and battle royale is totale shit so I've got no doubt Fincher is gonna make a better version of this. He's the director of Fight Club and Seven for christ's sake.

2 stupid movies. Adults vs Children PUHLEASE!!!! How old were they? 16? 2 more years and they would be adults themselves, what then??

Part 2 was extremly crap.

But hollywood can make a decent movie out of BR, they alredy done that with Ring. Japanese Ring movies are worthless

Considering how the Japanese producers simply won't allow a US release of the film, I find this news hard to believe. That is of course, unless the US movie is based off the book and not the film, I guess they could have gotten around it that way.

If it is true, Fincher is a great choice. And hopefully it does lead to a US release of the Japaense film on DVD as well, though I highly doubt it.

Someone give me the 2 dollar summary of Battle Royale
A random class was chosen out of the school system and sent to an island on which all the children, using weapons and other such things supplied, must kill each other off until only one remains. They wear collars that explode in a certain time if they don't follow the instructions, so the killing must happen or everyone dies. It occurs once a year, every year.

I'm going to assume

1) this will use college students or ordinary people (ala Survivor)
2) will be set in the US
3) probably will not have the alternate timeline universe, and there'll be some retarded excuse for it instead

It might be a good movie but I'll probably be disappointed with it by the "thematic" changes

Is it in the realm of possibility that Beat Takeshi might be in it?

He was in Johnny Mnemoic (sp)!

That would rock but I hope they use some old cranky US celebrity who wouldn't mind playing himself.

The book for Battle Royale was awful, at least the official English translation of it. Just shitty pulp fiction. The movie kicked ass though. They could easily do an American version justice. All they have to do is set it in the U.S. in the near future and say something like "The war on terror has taken a toll on the nation and after years of attrition a totalitarian regime took over and implemented the battle royale..." etc. They could also fix up the shitty ending.

Still some of the cultural things wouldn't translate as well, like the school uniform deal. The whole thing about how in America there are different cultures/ethnicities (would all the black people band together, for example) that were a non-issue in the Japanese version.

What they need to do is have actual high school aged students (as someone else said, no 25 year olds playing high school students) doing it and maybe have Beat Takeshi. If they keep up the atmosphere (especially with the music and bloody violence) and do a nice cultural transition from Japan to America this could be a promising project (like the American The Ring, though I didn't see Ringu)

I love all the shitty US remakes of Japanese movies. Without stupid Richard Gere and JLo, they probably wouldn't have released the Japanese 'shall we dance' over here - you can tell by the box that they hope blind/stupid people will pick it up thinking its the Richard Gere one.

I thought the Jap. movie was OK, but the manga is really hot shit, read it ! They should make a trilogy in which every movie is 3 hours long. So they wouldn't have to cut the best parts out (the transsexual, the teenie prostitutes)
