Battlefield 3 Premium unlocks early DLC access - report

By Tom Phillips Published 18 May, 2012

All upcoming expansions for one-time fee.

The heavily-rumoured Battlefield 3 Premium service will offer subscribers early access to all of the game's upcoming expansions.

Premium's one-off fee will cover the cost of all five upcoming Battlefield expansion packs, reputable fan site Battlefieldo reported - a similar model to Activision's Call of Duty Elite service.

Battlefield 3 Premium will include upcoming expansions Close Quarters (due 12th June), Armored Kill (due in autumn) and End Game (slated for launch this winter). An as-yet unannounced piece of "bonus content" is due in August, and a fifth and final expansion is allegedly on the way for March 2013.

New camos [sounds an awful lot like Camaros -Ed] and other exclusive in-game items will also be bundled into the service.

"First out is the one-of-a-kind Premium knife and black dog tag, plus a set of soldier camos, weapon camos, dog tags and Assignments that will make sure you stand out and get more personalisation options," a leaked description of the service previously revealed.

Price?

I lost all interest in this the moment I found out about the "expansions". MP games where you have to pay up regularily aren't my cup of tea and Origin didn't help either.

No thanks, I'm only interested in the vehicle expansion and the secret 3rd expansion.

Have you played Battlefield 2?

They have been doing these expansions for a while now.

I feel like EA/DICE's need to play catchup with Call of Duty ELITE is a little late, at this point.

They've done a great job to support the community with great patches, in my opinion. But, at this point, who's still even playing this and will buy this stuff? I'm guessing there's a healthy audience still playing on PC, but I'd imagine it's really started to calm down on consoles, in terms of peak active users.

If I knew all of this stuff was going to happen sooner, I wouldn't have gotten rid of my copy of the game. Even so, now I'm tempted to wait to buy a "Complete Edition" with all of the DLC bundled on the disc(s) with the main game, if it ever happens.

It just seems very ass-backwards to me. Where was the news of this at release? I know people would bitch and complain about them nickle and diming the consumer, but at least say you're planning ____ to come out __ months down the line and I would've been cool with that -- it'd give something to look forward to. It was just B2K (B2K was rad, however) and that was it. Now it seems like this was a reactionary move to the success of COD ELITE and their model.

After the clusterfuck of BC2 post-release content (unlocking maps from other game modes an extra, really?) you would think that they will do it right next time but...here we after, 7 months afther the release and still no DLC (if we don't count Karkand, which we shouldnt, seeing that it was included for free with the "limited" edition).

Its a pattern with EA games, just look at BioWare, especially Dragon Age 2.

I want real expansion-packs with new gameplay aspects, even though the "End-game" DLC sounds intriguing, maybe it's a prequel to BF2143...

Unless it's cheaper than buying all the expansions seperatly I do not see the value in this.

Not really interested in the Close Quarters expansion and the other stuff is worthless imo.

Sounds dumb but is still a much better idea than a subscription that gets you half off. I will never be used to the idea of paying for something that isn't even close to release.

So it's essentially a season pack for the dlc packs? If the price is acceptable, might dip into this as I play bf3 quite a lot.

No, I haven't but weren't they released farther apart? Not saying it's a bad thing, I simply don't spend that much time playing online games so an one-time investment is preferable to me.

I feel almost the same way.

People who buy this - Part of the problem

I'll gladly be part of it. Battlefield 3 is one of FPS games of the last few years, despite singleplayer and co-op being a snoozefest - the multiplayer is godlike. I still play quite some hours a week, and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon, especially when the new DLC drops. Back to Karkand was fantastic DLC, and Close Quarters looks like it's going to rock, too.

I'll just have to see if I'll agree with the pricing, but I rather spend €100,- on a game I absolutely LOVE, than €50,- on some overhyped shit game that I stop playing after a few weeks.

Meh. Its like BC2 but you have to pay for it - I liked how they added content there.

Also this is just what EA does now - its what Origin is all about. Making the money they can't make from Steam by making it from DLC.

I hope they announce the DLC costs though - otherwise, why would anyone buy this?
(I suspect this isn't cheaper like a multipack but more expensive than buying things individually)

I dont see people who buy this can be part of any problem. There's some of us who play Battlefield 3 quite a lot and are going to be buying any new 'expansions'(or DLC, as they call it nowadays!), so if there's a one-time fee(hopefully at a slight discount from buying seperately...), then I dont see what the problem is.

Its annoying they do the 'get it early' crap, but I cant blame them if it tips a few on-the-fencers over to committing.

EDIT: Also, first I've heard of this March 2013 pack.

Ah yes, the vague comment that suggests there are more options, yet does not mention them.
Because your false dichotomy was the gaming equivalent of "I'd rather have the death penalty than let murderers roam the streets free" - it simply isn't a restriction of choice that exists.

The game sold 15 million copies, right?

I don't think "who is even playing this" is a valid question.
There are TONS of EU 64 player servers full at all times.

So is this a one time payment like a season pass or do you have to pay it monthly like CoD elite ??

If its a season pass I will buy it

I'm now thinking fondly back to the COD Elite thread where people swore that Battlefield and DICE would never do such a heinous thing.

One of the what now? If you were going to say best, ArmA II is still a better FPS, and has a far better single player, co-op, and multiplayer mechanics.

Comparing Battlefield 3 and ARMA2 just because they both have soldiers and guns, is REALLY not a proper comparison.

In some sense, sure. Particularly if he likes BF3 as an arcadey shooter, because that's really the only place the game can reign well.

That's not just the only place it can reign well, it's the place it belongs into. It was made as that. It is in no way competing with ARMA2 apart from "they are both video games that cost money to buy". That's it. They have literally nothing in common apart from "pressing a button does things".

This is their version of the seasons pass. It probably has five expansions for 30 dollars, just like all the other big games that are doing the same thing.

Please... arma 2 is a clunky piece of shit game with a clunky piece of shit engine and laughable clunky piece of shit single player. Yes its more realistic, but thats where the pros end.

I love both BF3 and Arma 1/2 (and the original Op Flash) for completely separate reasons, and I see no need to love/hate one of them at the expense of the other. The games offer differing pleasures.

I am so glad that I only liked BC2 and BF3 instead of LOVING them like I did with 1942 and BF2. I can easily pass on this.
