A whole month without a new beard? This cannot stand!
I had a moment of weakness back in July (partially as I had a holiday coming up and wasn't all that keen on the idea of sun tan lotion and a beard) and shaved it all off. The horror! It was like looking at a stranger in the mirror for a while. :'(

Just getting back to a length I like (going to go a lot longer) so I feel human again. Just picked up some new beard oil as well - nothing wrong with my current stuff (Bobo's) but my youngest daughter isn't keen on the smell.

Forced why? :'(

My mum & sister had forced me to shave it off. My mother has outdated views on a man's personal appearance, and while she insists she knows what I want, it's otherwise not the case. For my sister, she like men that are clean shaven. If I wasn't compared to Grizzly Adams, they will then compare me to Santa Clause! (I'm well built, but I have a round face that is chiseled, if that makes any sense.)

For me, I have a big forehead, which is why I wanted to grow my hair out to cover it. For my beard, I always grow it out for the fall/winter season, as it keeps my face warm & a full beard generally looks good on me. I make sure both my head & facial hair don't become unkempt, so I have a general clean up every 3-5 months for my head, while I trim my mustache and neck hair to being reasonable.

I don't have a camera on me to show my current hairstyle & beard (or what I was aiming for), but this is what my hair & beard have looked like, which is what I liked. I know that this GIF is infamous, but I liked how Robert Redford looked in the film Jeremiah Johnson:

Now I have the same hair style, but my face is prickly. :(

While I was growing mine first time (I got to 8 months from Christmas last year to July) I took varying degrees of stick from people that just couldn't get used to it (much worse in those people I hadn't seen for almost the full 8 months naturally!) so I know how you feel to an extent - they all came around though, and then I took varying degrees of stick once I went clean shaven again... the difference that time though is that *I* wasn't happy.

No real point to this other than to say you should damn well keep it if you want to! I get it trimmed every few weeks (tidy and straighten the sides, trim 'tash and tidy up the bottom) and love looking after it as much as I do looking at it. I also love looking at my shadow when I'm fully bearded up! ^_^

My beard can get a little itchy if I don't trim it for a while. During the winter I also sometimes get small rashes in some areas.
I use high quality face lotions every morning and evening and if I'm not too lazy I also use cleansing milk in the evening. I'd say the cleansing milk has the best effect but it's still not perfect. My wife's parents own a beauty / cosmetics business and I get the stuff for free from them. I've tried different product lines for different kinds of skin types but nothing ever helped 100%.
Is there something specific to beards that someone can recommend? Is this just something that can't be completely avoided?
Then there's also the question if conditioner / shampoo is necessary in the beard area.

I tried growing a beard for the first time over the summer. I have a pretty healthy one right now. I trim every few days and shave the neck almost daily to keep it looking nice.

My longest beard ever came off recently for a job interview. Probably have to meet with HR soon but once the paperwork is all done I'll get back on it.

Beard-gaf, I am working to become one of you. Decided without the beard, I have far too much of a baby-face. So I grew it out for a week. I just shaved the neck so the beard looks more intentional and less "i'm lazy". Would anyone mind critiquing my neck-lines?

Included pic of me while cleanshaven.

Beard-GAF: I want to get something kinda like this:

Angular lines, shapes the face nicely, not too long. Can I have that work given my beard grows like this:

I'd love to think the first pic would fit the shape of my face nicely and be a bit more manageable, but have a feeling it won't :(

Sure you can, that looks fairly simple to be honest. Put on a 20 or so millimeter guard on the machine and trim your entire beard. Then use a razor to shave your neck, you can trace a line pretty simply if you follow the pit between your neck and jaw.

Awesome. Do I go with or against the grain when using the trimmer?

Yeah, you might want to go with the grain first if it's really long, then against the grain to smooth everything out. The good thing about using a guard is that it actually doesn't rally matter.

As I mentioned above, I was horrified last time I went clean shaven and won't be doing it again in a hurry!

I can't recommend a good beard oil enough. I've been using Bobo's (just about to run out) which is about £18 for 50ml, but I've just picked up a bottle from Apothecary87 (double the price! D:) because my daughter isn't keen on the smell of the Bobo's stuff.

As for washing, personally I wash it with a good natural soap (same as I do my hair now) and that's pretty much it. I will use a shampoo very occasionally (never been a fan of conditioner on my hair or beard), but I can't quite work out why I feel compelled to do so!

Checking in.

Mines at that crucial stage between stubble and full beard.

Its going to be a tense few days to see how this turns out.

I've been letting my beard grow now for about 6 months, I'm still not happy with it, may end up shaving it. Mustache doesn't fully connect to the rest and for some reason the hair on the front of my chin doesn't grow as long as the rest. Also it doesn't seem to be thick enough, like you can still see my face through the beard. Any tips, critiques? should I keep it or shave it?

Thanks. I ordered a beard oil and it should arrive today. Will give it a try!

I almost shaved mine off the other day, was just feeling tired of it. I've had it about a year? I keep it trim (4 guard and then let it grow out for a week, two at most) with shaved neck and cheeks along the natural lines. I slept on it and decided not to. I told two co-workers today over lunch that I almost shaved it off they other day - they also know me beardless. Both said don't, that it looked great on me. So, that was kind of nice. Sometimes I really like the way it looks, other times I feel kind of meh about it.

Shaved my mustache/beard today about 4 months after letting it grow. I was just doing it to see how it grew in and while it looked ok, it was nowhere near as full as I would have liked. I'm still envious of those of you that can grow beards but I understand it's just not something I'll be able to do in my life.

You're right that it doesn't seem thick enough currently (not an insult! rock whatever you want and be happy with yourself!). Wouldn't worry too much about a gap between your mustache and your beard. One good strategy is just to keep trimming it (without shaving it). That way slower growing areas can catch up to quicker growing areas. Like, when I moved my cheek-line up an inch or so on my face, it took me maybe 3-4 months to accomplish that. I stopped shaving my cheeks and started trimming the rest and everything eventually balanced out. Shampoo, conditioner, a comb, and some good beard wax, balm, or oil can help stuff look fuller too.

Also age is a big thing. I can't tell how old you are from a photo. I was about 25 before I stopped being patchy, a little while after when I moved up my cheek line, and it's only been in the last year that I've been able to wear a longer beard and have it look nice. I've had a beard on and off since maybe, uh, 2006-2007 or so and this is the first year I'm really happy with it.

You just need to hit up an barbershop. Its amazing what a good barber can do

Had this beard until a couple of months ago, shaved it for a job interview... at least I got the job but I miss it, I'm in the process of growing it again.

Anyway, silly photo and no, I didn't use the pointy mustache normally lol

I'm on the fence about my moustache. It's now too short to style it to the side like a boss, but too long to just let it hang there, because it's catching food and beverages like a filter.

I hate inbetweenstages.

I let my beard grow crazy-wazy. When I go to bars I usually get some nice compliments about the length. I don't do anything that special with it though, I just shampoo and condition it and keep my moustache trimmed.

I'll take a pic later when I'm decent.

The join on my right side is just about solid enough.

But on the left side its a few strands short and there's a miniscule gap that annoys the hell out of me.

At age 25, is there any chance my beard may fill out a bit more over the next few years?

Absolutely. Mine didn't fill out till my 30's. Especially those connections.

Tried once and it itches like hell. I know it will stop eventually but hell it itches :P
Going to try again tho. A man got to see his beard and abs at least once in a lifetime...
