I have been cutting my hair off for the past 14 years and just started to grow it out.

I am toying with the idea of trying out a beard as well. He is a shot from today, I have not shaved for 2 days.

Salt and pepper beard is best beard.

I agree. As mine grows out I'm seeing the odd non-black hair here and there and think it looks quite distinguished.

Good looking beards here, fellows! People are telling me mine is still a bit patch but I have a good feeling that it will fill out with time and patience. I'm only about two weeks out now.

I really think this is an experiment every guy owes it to himself to try at least once. It's such an odd sensation to touch my face and feel anything more substantial than mere stubble.

I haven't been lucky enough to have non-cranky old ladies at work commentary on my beard yet but, fuck it, if they aren't paying my bills or having sex with me why should I care? I like the way it looks so far!

If people are really aggressively repulsed by a well-groomed beard I think that's kind of a sad commentary on them since men, by our very nature, are SUPPOSED to have them.

I'm catching up on some movies and I thought this was just about the best thing ever (From the Amityville Horror) :

You damn modern-day radicals. What with your woolie manes and wild beards...

Month in. Living the dream!

I'm not sure about the relative douche factor of the hat. I may have made a tactical error.

Finally bought myself a nice trimmer. Worth it, I think.

My response to anyone who doesn't think beards are totally badass...

As others have said...completely professional, but know you're surroundings. I keep mine close and trimmed because most peeps in my office are fresh-faced and I don't want to rock the boat too much. Otherwise, I'd definitely grow it out a bit more. Wife and kiddies hated it at first...now my kids get nervous whenever they hear me say anything about shaving.

"Y-you're...not shaving it off...are you???"

Beard-GAF checking in.

I was suffering from split ends, and not really knowing how to look after my beard for the longest time. Normal shampoos were just not helping. I finally found a place that sells decent beard care products though!

From my experience, I'd say the Beard Saver is the less useful of the two, the wonder repair conditioner is amazing though.

The beard saver is like a moisturizer; the only time I really appreciated it was after being out in the desert for a while and having completely sand-blasted my face / beard so badly that it felt like a wire brush.

The conditioner I use every 3-5 days, and it's just awesome. I no longer get the "sharp" feeling after trimming my mustache, which is a popular outcome with the ladies. I also dont have split ends any more, which is great.

They're expensive, but well worth it for maintaining a well groomed beard.

Trying to figure out what to do with my beard. It's just a giant messy thing and has been since I started growing it. I trimmed it for a little while at the start but haven't touched it in a good while, 8 months or so. It was always patchy when I trimmed so i've left it.

I don't mind the beard but it's all a little .. frizzy? So it doesn't look as bad ass as a beard should.

Suggestions?

I always have stubble or a very short beard. I'm never clean shaven. I can't really grow a proper beard though because it gets insanely itchy to the point where I'll scratch my face until the skin breaks. I just go all over my entire head with the clippers.

Try to make it a more decent one remove all the hair that is sticking out. Go for a more smoother look and make it a bit shorter.

Do you guys let the mustache grow long enough to go below your upper lip line or trim it just so it is above the lip line? I don't like how it feels on my lips and have been trimming just a bit to keep it above but not sure what proper beard etiquette says. I see some pictures in here doing it both ways.

I'd like an answer to this as well. I'm in the same bind.

I trim it so it's just in line with the upper lip line. Otherwise I get it in the food...

Proper beard etiquette says do what you think looks good and makes you feel right. I trim mine as it gets to my lip, if I could grow it longer and then style/wax it I would but I can't put up with it while it grows.

Up to the individual. And the person you kiss may have opinions too, but they can often be ignored ;)

You've got plenty to work with there. If you can, trim the sides down so they dont stick out. If you like the longer beard look, leave it at the chin where it's looking good, and shape towards that.

Here's a super rough approximation of what I'm suggesting.

Do it in stages! Dont over trim and regret things afterwards.

Progress is being made:

I'm getting a haircut tomorrow, so I'm hoping my usual place (hot NZ girl, rawr) does beard thingys as well because I'm COMPLETELY clueless about how to "trim for my face shape", particularly the neckline (I think I have the rest nailed, that's pretty much natural growth in that pic).

I always trim it, don't like the feeling when it gets to long.

Sept or Oct of last year was the last time I shaved.

Not exactly the best lighting conditions there.

Or here for that matter.

The beard before this was growing for almost two years. This one is going to get shaved down into a manageable respectable look. I'm going to try to get consistent work. Lost in the woods look could be damaging.

My beard SSUUUUUUCCCCKKKKKS. I will report back with a picture of me beard so you can all laugh at my face and tell me how I'll remain a prepubescent boy for the rest of my days :(
