Why not both? They did it for the Coniviction arc. They obviously don't care about pacing or telling the plot properly. Be ready to expect that all of Farnese's and Serpico's backstory will be removed and the character development and atmosphere of Berserk will be nonexistent.

Millennium Falcon arc is over 12 volumes long. The 1st five episode covers about 2 volumes and a half out of 12. I have a feeling it'll only cover the Holy War chapter of the arc like Walter from SKNET mentioned in that thread.
I certainly hope so. Granted, I'm not expecting the season to be good either way but I'd hope that the studio would at least have the competence to not try to cram 12 volumes of content into 13 episodes. However, I'm going with the assumption that this season will be the last of this anime since, as far as I'm aware, it has sold terribly and is not very popular. If that's the case, I can see how they'd want to end the show with Guts and crew getting on the boat. After all, the manga is getting more episodes soon, and the anime is intended to just be an advertisement for the manga. So they'd want to get potential new readers up-to-speed for the upcoming chapters. Again, this is just speculation on my part and I do hope I'm proven wrong.

So I completed the 1997 anime last night, been letting it ferment in my head all day.
So I think I'm beginning to understand why people say Berserk served as an inspiration for the Souls/Bourne series and I'm absolutely gutted to see that the 2016 anime is a bit shit because now I'm going to have to start reading this damn thing. Any suggestions on how a Brit might go about that?

I've got to say that I did not trust Griffith at all after the run in with Nosferatu and suspected that he would fuck them all over in some way (as it implies) but I kinda figured it would be a case of the BotH suffering in the pursuit of Griffith's dream rather than him literally feeding them to a bunch of messed up Lovecraftian horrors to be reborn as a Demon King.
I do have a question regarding the behelit(?) and the dialogue between Griffith/Guts before the shit hits the fan because the subs really didn't make any sense to me. It sounds like he tries to stop Guts from touching him after the eclipse started, was that because he knew what was going to happen? Was Guts at fault for everyone else getting roped into it by touching Griffith after it had started or was that inevitable, in which case what was Griffith trying to tell Guts? Was it just a general hesitation from Griffith, who had to be having some pretty mixed feelings towards Guts at that point, trying to convince himself it didn't have to go down like that if Guts just left him alone?
I was told to watch the first episode of the anime last since it takes place after everything went down, so I assume Guts is the only one who survives that whole ordeal somehow? As with Guts I imagine Griffith's feelings for Casca changed a great deal after his torture, since she was almost entirely dependent on him prior to his capture but it was the opposite after his rescue, and his rape of her was a way of reestablishing that dominance over her, but what follows that I don't know. Did Guts just 'Guts' his way out of the situation and leave Casca behind? I assume I need to read on to find the answers.
Oh, and the soundtrack to this show is godlike. Some really great tracks in there. Except the intro music, that's something else entirely. Almost as horrifying as the Eclipse.

Griffith blames Guts for everything that happened after he left, because he left. Griffith changed his long term plans and acted impulsively when Guts left because it shattered his world view and confidence that he had a full grip on his own grand plans. Guts didn't just leave, he beat him and bested him in front of everyone.
So Griffith wanted to regain control and hurried his plans with Charlotte to cement his plans but his irrational actions were well though out and he got caught, and everything fell apart. Everything. Every thing he ever planned for, all his ambitions got destroyed. Instead of taking responsibility, he blamed Guts. Guts betrayed him and left, from his point of view. So he hated him. Intensely hated him.
He didn't want to be a cripple. He couldn't even accept a quite life with Caska in future. His balls were cut off. His muscles atrophied his ligatures severed. His tongue removed. The only grip on his sanity left was his hatred of Guts.
Griffith only started the eclipse ceremony, not because he knew what was going to happen, but because he wanted to kill himself and end his own suffering. He was beyond broken and wanted to quit everything and couldn't stand the thought of living his life onward.
Griffith did not and could not see the Eclipse coming, but when he did, it was the only chance had left. If he didn't, then all the men and woman that fought for him would have died in vain. He was happy to sacrifice the life of others if it helped him achieve his goal, and he finally gets that chance.
Raping Caska and forcing Guts to watch? That was petty revenge.

Immediately after Griffith finishes raping Casca, she and Guts are rescued by a character called the Skull Knight who never appeared in the anime. Rickert then heals them with some fairy dust he was given and brings them to Godo's mine. Guts wakes up a few days later and learns that Casca has gone completely insane from the trauma she suffered. She was also pregnant with Gut's child, and Griffith's rape causes the fetus to mutate into a demon. Shortly afterwards, Guts gets a new suit of armor and the Dragonslayer sword from Godo along with a metal arm made by Rickert. He then heads off to begin a two year roaring rampage of revenge against Griffith and the apostles, which is where episode 1 of the anime picks up from which, in turn, is based on the first chapter of the Black Swordsman arc from the manga. Read from the very beginning of the Black Swordsman arc and also read through the Golden Age because it contains several characters and plot elements that were cut from the anime. Two characters in particular (the Skull Knight and another person) become very important later on in the manga.
Definitely stay away from the 2016 anime. It does not honor the manga in any way, and if you remove the Berserk name from it than it completely fails in literally every facet of filmmaking. Script, animation, logic, flow, characters, sound, it completely fails in every front as an animated show. It has all the quality of the worst video game-based movies, and not even one of the so-bad-they're-entertaining ones.
As for reading the manga, if you can afford it, than I strongly recommend purchasing the official Dark Horse releases. Stay away from the online fan translations as they are often filled with poor grammar, remove entire speech bubbles and change the meaning of the original text. If you can't afford the official versions, than scans of them are available on mangasee. Of course, I'll say again that you should support the manga by purchasing the official translation even if it's just one volume, but if you can't then there are other options.

Understandable. I guess my interpretation of things is throwing me off. I was thinking that Griffith possibly had some sort of affection for Guts specifically because he was able to distract Griffith from his long term plans. Maybe affection is the wrong word but he did seem to acknowledge that nobody else but Guts had that much impact on his life. Not necessarily as simple as "you're responsible for ruining my plans" but more "you're the reason I ruined my own plans and I hate you for that, but it's still on me", if you follow. I could just be making things more grey than intended.
Maybe I just need to rewatch it again (or wait until I read it) because it really seemed to me like he knew something was going to happen and didn't want Guts there. Maybe it's just a poor sub translation that's confusing me.

This is what I was wanting to look out for, thanks. Dark Horse it it. It's a shame they don't seem to have done any compendiums like Image Comics do for The Walking Dead.

I don't think you need black bars here to talk about the sacrifice. It is undeniable he has a strong affection for Guts. It was certainly the most he had for anyone. To the point he starts to doubt himself. Some stuff I wrote in the past about why the sacrifice happens.
Seeing Guts is a natural catalyst for him to run away. Unable to face the emotional turmoil Guts represent and that being a huge factor in the unattainability of his dream he proceeds to escape the only way he can. There's a very beautiful line in later parts of manga that clearly reinforce that Griffith affection for Guts limited him.

Griffith fucking hates Guts when he gets rescued. I think in the anime Griffith in his fucked up state even tries to choke Guts, which was hand waved by Guts.

Well it wasn't a track per se..it was the den den mushi sound when it's 'ringing'.
I used it for like 2 semesters back in college and I still can't stand that sound anymore.

None of the OG cast is back. Makes me wonder if he turned it down or wasn't offered it in the first place. He ain't that busy with Hunter x Hunter yet.
Griffith and Casca's old voice actors have replied on twitter that they were never contacted for this anime, and I'm guessing that the same applies to the rest of the cast. Sean Schemmel, the voice actor of Goku, went on a twitter rant after finding out why. He hasn't disclosed the reason yet, he's just said that Crunchyroll had a very bad reason for not bringing the cast back.
