Besiege - Physics based vehicle construction goes medieval

After seeing a few gifs it was a no brainer to buy, especially at the price.

I'm terrible at this though. Everything I put together just falls apart.

Are there any objectives in the game besides destruction? Seems like the perfect game for Nuts & Bolts style missions that require thinking outside the box.
Some levels have you transporting resources, or needing to kill X amount of enemies. One level has you maneuver around mines to reach a location.

I think -most- of the missions in the game right now are destruction but it does vary that quite well, and a few are also about transporting stuff. In fact the one I've been having the most fun with requires you to lift a large bundle of wood and place it up on a raised platform.

Finished the first world.

I tried to build a thing that would work for all 15 levels and let me tell you, the level with the three checkpoints is an absolute fucker if you try to get through it with a machine that's built for housing a bunch of weapons.

I have some minor nitpicks (bombs go off way too easily) but it's early access so whatever. This game is amazing and you should buy it.

Try using more bracing. Without it most machines will tear themselves apart.

Watched the GB quicklook and realized this has a music score that feels almost entirely like that 10 minute track at the end of the Hannibal season finale where they slowed the classical music down 800%.. Therefore this is the greatest game of all time.

edit; just purchased for the fun

Update Schedule
WeÂ’ve decided that there will be two types of update from now on Minor and Major

Minor Updates
These updates will be every 2-3 weeks and will contain bug fixes, changes and small additions to the game such as new blocks. (Like the updates weÂ’ve done so far)

Major Updates
These updates will be released every 2-3 months and will contain things like new levels and major features

This isnÂ’t set in stone and may need tweaking as development progresses but we feel this structure will allow us to provide regular content for those that just enjoy tinkering, whilst allowing us to spend time focussing on larger features and more levels.

V0.03 Changelog
ADDITIONAL CONTENT
- Added Half Pipe Block
- Added Free Rotating Cog Block
- Added Powered Cog Block
- Add Heavy Boulder Block
- Added Unpowered Wheel

IMPROVEMENTS
- Made wood block have slightly higher break force
- Key-Mapper can now switch blocks while open
- Key-Mapper window can now be dragged around
- Added piston speed slider
- Added Toggle mode to Pistons
- Added Blood Disable option
- Made Ice altitude higher
- Made flying panels freeze at high altitudes
- Made undo button colliders larger

FIXES
- Fixed hinges becoming rigid when saving
- Fixed blocks being built whilst clicking on a UI element
- Fixed grabber triggering out of bounds warning even though it is within bounds

CHANGES
- Renamed 'Powered' tab to 'Mechanical'

I really need to get a better trebuchet working. It always falls short for that zone where you have to destroy a rock on top of the mountain. I ended up slapping wheels on my trebuchet then slam the rock, lol.

The new cogs are kinda cool, but they're free spinning so you can't put underpowered ones on the ends of shafts and transfer power that way. The same with unpowered wheels. Hopefully there will be a way to attach them.

EDIT - never mind, it appears you can use bracing as drive shafts!

Best besiege contraptions I've seen on /v/ are still:

- revolver ocelot pulling dual pistols from holsters and firing them, putting them back in the holster and putting his hands on his hips

- a rolling tank that made a transforming sword and swung it vertically onto a house, destroying it

wish I had the webms, those threads are too fun.

I need to see both those things. Sound amazing.

Can you load other people's creations in this game?
Yes
You can save and share your vehicles with others. Here are steps from the game's forums
- Your saves are stored in the following directory: [Besiege Main Directory]Besiege_DataSavedMachines
- The game creates thumbnails for your machines they are stored here: [Besiege Main Directory]Besiege_DataSavedMachinesThumbnails

- To use other people's machines simply download the file and save it into: [Besiege Main Directory]Besiege_DataSavedMachines

I seriously love this game. It's so many things I wanted out of a Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts sequel.

I love that even the most basic contraptions people make are endlessly entertaining to watch.

Bought this yesterday and I'm terrible at it. Couldn't even build a steerable car. I think it was level 3 where yoh have to get to the safe zone.

Ended up jury rigging some sort of helicopter that just about flew in a straight line but too much thrust meant it would flip over and explode.

Any basic tips?

These two methods work well.

Was having trouble building something that could turn effectively, found a really good method online

Map the movement of the left inner wheels to Right - Left, and the right inner wheels to Left - Right.

For turning, I've been using this boggie to good effect:

Finally managed to make a trebuchet that doesn't self-destruct 100% of the time.

Can't figure out the sling so I'm just making an auto loader right now. How do you embed webms?

Can't figure out the sling so I'm just making an auto loader right now.

Maybe put a hinge on the end, build out some blocks, put a grabber on the end, and then remove the blocks and replace them with a strut. That should make for a lightweight structure that can fling around appropriately.

Then one more spring from the grabber to the weight to allow bringing the boulder up pre-swing. Maybe have two hinges so it can fold nicely.

Seen a few webms where people seem to be getting propulsion out of flamethrowers, is this from an earlier build because they dont seem to move even the lightest vehicle for me

I built a 'Musket' style sling for the level where you must destroy the laser tower while watching Better Call Saul today:

It really pushed the Unity engine, as at times the hinge would fall, allowing the barrel to point exactly where I hoped:

and at other times...

not so much!

Now working on contained thrust.

Flamethrowers have 0 propulsion, they just add +10 style points to your locomotion solution.

Just beat zone 15!

I feel my design got a little crazy. I took my catapult and made 2 little explosive side vehicles that I drove to different points of the castle and blew up.

I hope the devs sneak in an implementation of Tilt Shift camera as they go along. The DoF is great, but I'd really love a hyper-saturated Tilt Shift effect as well.

Perhaps they've tried it in the past and found that the white background and non-textured floor meant Tilt Shift wasn't dramatic enough to worry about.

Is there no way to adjust mouse sensitivity? When I launch the game it goes far too low and changing it outside of the game doesn't affect it in-game either.

It's also defaulting to something like 4k resolution but doesnt have my native res on the selection screen. Frustrating!

OK people, you need to buy this now.

This is an example of how to do early access right. The game is huge amounts of fun NOW, the price is LOW and it will get even better in the future.
Even if (like me) you think early access games are as attractive as syphilis, you owe it to yourself to break your own rules and get this game.

Buy from the developer site. Pay $7 and get a steam key plus DRM-free downloadable versions.

The best bit is that you don't even need to be good at engineering type stuff (unlike Kerbal Space Program). It's really easy to get into.

I've only played for an hours or two and I already made various awesome/stupid aircraft carrier designs. The toolkit is just brilliant.

This is going to be game of the year.
