Best AGP card for under $200?

CoV is chugging a bit on my GF4 4200, what should I replace it with?

I'm torn between the 6600GT and X800Gt. I'm pretty sure the 6600GT is faster, but I can get a 256mb X800 for the same price as the 128mb 6600.

I'm very happy with my 6600GT 256mb. Cost me 189€.

I think 256mb is a good thing, while the card doesn't have the bandwitdh for anti aliasing etc, you can usually crank up the texture resolution without a big hit.

I have a 6800LE. Unlocked and overclocked. You have to use Rivatuner to unlock the extras. Mine artifacts but only in afew games and its pretty minor. Some people get perfect unlocks others cant at all. With the one i posted its more powerful out of the box than a 6600GT would be when overclocked. So its not really risky. But yes the video acceleration is messed up. If your pc is powerful you'll be fine. If you can get the GS cheap then thats a great offer too.

Has anyone here unlocked their 6800? Is the artifacting bad?

I got a Chaintech 6800LE was able to unlock mine to 6 shaders and 12 pipes with no artifacts for $116. I did get bad artifacts with 16 unlocked but several have been lucky to get the full 16 with out a problem.

For Black Friday at Bestbuy they are having both AGP and PCI Express versions of the ATI X700 PRO cards for 99 bucks after rebate (100 dollar mail in rebate I believe).

Will that be available online or just in-store?

I have someone who needs a cheapo graphics card for a PC and I'm thinking of finding something to replace my 9500 Pro and then give it to him the 9500 Pro for like $15, hehe.

Ok, the games that'll probably get played most are City of Villains and Oblivion next year. Is it worth it to get a 256mb 6600GT over a 128mb 6800, being that the 6800 can most probably be unlocked?

The 6800 will outperform the 6600 GT anyway since these are AGP versions. The 6800 has 12 pipes standard. 6800 LE has 8 pipes. Even if you dont unlock its still a good card and the overclock potential is much greater :)

Bear in mind it plays games very well. Battlefield 2 for example you can set pretty much everything high save for textures(medium) to make it run 60fps. Half Life 2 you can maxed out but Lost Cost can push it with AF and AA maxed. Then again i only have a 2.6ghz CPU and 4xAGP. For Oblivion i assume medium settings will run fine at worst if it needs extra horsepower over everything else.

Of all the cards mentioned, what performance jump would I get over a 9800 Pro?

*Negligible
*Considerable
*OMGWTFJOYJOY!

CPU is @ 3.2 or something and I have a 1GB of RAM.

6800 series will give you a big boost at nice prices. Plus you have entry to the SM3.0 effects club.

These bad boys never really dropped in price, so they're still pretty much $300 for the AGP versions.

For the record, I'm running a 2.8ghz P4, 1GB DDR400, and a GF4 4200 right now.

Yup. Dont expect AGP cards to get cheaper anymore. Its all about PCI express now. Have a look at the Geforce 6800 or 6800LE if you want to save money for not too far behind performance. Just bear in mind the memory just cant compete against a GT or ultra.

Yeah you'll fare better than me so forget what i said :P

Provided you get 16 pipes and a nice overclock ;)
