I hate beer snobs.

Whatever is on the tap. It's beer .. not wine.

Couldn't agree more. Present company excluded of course, the only dudes I know who are beer snobs are kinda the unathletic pasty dudes who hang out with each other more than say, well-adjusted attractive females. Didn't the beer snobs get the picture a couple of years ago when Budweiser faced off against Heineken in those head to head commercials a few years back?

I could really care less if I'm drinkin schlitz, PBR or Meinlebenstein brew. Do I prefer Becks to a lot of beers? Yes. Do I have my favorite beers, well, yes. But at any bar, any party or any club at any time, I wouldn't turn down any beer unless its warm, and pretty much enjoy it for what its worth unless its no-name malt liquor or bitch beer.

I used to think Guinness, but then I came to my senses. Now I say Newcastle, definitely.

My favorite: Shipyard Ale from Kennebunkport, ME - there is no substitute...

A couple of years ago Consumer Reports did a whole issue on beer. The result? They rated Brooklyn Lager as the best beer brewed in the U.S.
I disagree...

The greatest drink in the world.
I'm always sooo tempted to try this, but I never do. Is it worth it?

My favs:
Bass
Newcastle
Guinness

Fav cheap beers:
Coors
Labatt

Hard Ciders:
Copperberg Pear (haven't seen it in the US)
Woodchucks (distant second place to copperberg, but it'll do.)

And cybamerc-- the best beer I've ever had was a fresh Labatt in Toronto a few blocks south of the brewery.

If not drinking piss-beer like Budweiser makes me a "beer snob", then so be it. If it's free at a party, that's one thing...but I'm not paying for that shit. Some stupid Budwesier commercial isn't going to change that...advertising only affects fucking morons anyways.

Anyway, I'll second Boddingtons. I love this stuff along with Bass, Newcastle, etc.

Widmer Hefeweizen--with lemon, the way God intended.
Guiness--breakfast of champions
About any ESB--even Foster's can't fuck up ESB.
Killian's Irish Red

To the beer snob comments:

I don't only drink the good shit. I merely recognize and appreciate the good shit. Why limit yourself, or worse yet, lie to yourself that they all taste the same. That's like saying that all burgers are created equal. Something I get at a bar & grill will be much better than the greasy stuff down at some fast food place, but I'll still eat the fast food stuff. How's this any different?

Anyway, I love Rickard's Red and Big Rock Trad. I drink plenty of others though ... my cheap beer nod tends to go to Lucky.

Same here, I've been known to still down a pabst or five when the moment feels right. It's all about picking the right beer for what you feel like having.

See that is cool. But I know some actual snobs who probably would make themselves throw up if you slipped them a Budweiser, lol.

Well, I've never liked Coors Light, heh. Much in the same way I can't stand McDonalds. I understand where you're coming from, but people being beer snobs has nothing to do with the beer.

Edit: Try to guess journalist/author who inspired the brew and also who the artwork artist is.
No, not Bob Woodward

You can recognize Ralph Steadman's artwork from a mile away. Although I was under the impression that Thompson was just the inspiration for one of their limited-edition brews, not the entire line. I haven't had a chance to try Flying Dog yet, but it's on my list.

I'm pretty picky when it comes to my beer, though:

Magic Hat #9
Magic Hat Blind Faith
Sam Adams
Sam Adams Cherry Wheat

In a pinch, I'll do Heinekin or Bass. Guiness is good too, but I'm usually not in the mood for something that heavy.

Do you live out west??? I ask because all my friends that live out on the left coast have their corona like that....

Also, with Corona. If anyone wants to kick it up a notch, I suggest you get a shot of Bacardi Limon poured into it...

Basically when you pop open the bottle, there is that little area at the neck of the bottle that has no liquid. Take some Bacardi Limon and pour it in until it rises to right below the mouthpiece on the bottle... Then do the standard flip over to mix it nicely and drink. You hardly tast the limon but you have a few of those, and you will be shitfaced in no time.
Yes, California most places in Mexico serve it like that or give you the option of it, whenever I drink my corona's like that it eliminates any bad effects the next day (seriously) I had about 14 on saturday and woke up perfectly fine on Sunday morning ( a tad dehydrated but no more)

Amen.

(Although even if it were free at a party, I'd just skip it and go for the liquor instead.)

I actually prefer Coor's light over any other beer. I also like XX, Bud, Miller, Hoegarden(sp?), Molsons...basically any beer that doesnt have a strong taste, bitter taste. My least favorite beer has to be Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat...that shit tastes like tar.

Asking this question on a predominantly US forum is not going to get you accurate answers. :) Best way to get into beer is to head to a UK beer festival and start drinking at random.

That said, I will endorse a few select recommendations made here:

thumb_260.jpg

I'm not a huge stout drinker, but I try them once in a while and this was definitely one of the more pleasant ones. Plenty of other good beers from Youngs as well.

Hoegardeen
With a slice of lemon. Spent far too long working in Holland, which meant that I had to drink either Heineken or Hoegaarden. And so I picked up a taste for Hoegaarden.

Or, if they didn't have any in, this tended to be the alternative.

beer-varietypack.jpg

The local off license when I lived in Edinburgh put in a lot of work to get some of the best US beers shipped over to Scotland, and the Flying Dog beers stood head and shoulders above the rest. I may still be dismissive of US beers in general, but it's thanks to Flying Dog that I no longer entirely mean it. :)

Newcastle brown ale crops up a lot in these threads - it's my beer of choice in pubs that don't sell decent beer on tap, because you can pretty much always rely on them having a bottle or two in the fridge, but it's more of an old reliable option than anything special.

A few other recommendations of my own: anything from the Badger brewery is a good start. Tanglefoot has been the beer that converted any number of my cider and lager drinking friends and relatives to the real stuff, and Fursty Ferret is another extremely quaffable pint, but Golden Glory (peach blossom flavoured) and Blandford Fly (a beer with a hint of ginger) are nice oddities as well. And speaking of oddly flavoured beers, Fraoch (heather) and Grozet (gooseberry) were a couple of very pleasant beers I got to know up in Scotland, though I couldn't tell you the brewery and have never seen them on tap.

GOLDEN_PRIDE_bottle_(better_image).jpg

Fullers' Golden Pride is an incredible beer I've discovered recently. It's a deceptively drinkable golden ale but it's a moderately stunning 8.5%. Sure, there are stronger beers, but they mostly taste like it, and some of them you could use to surface roads. This stuff is delicious and light but still hits you in the back of the skull like a hammer.

If you ever get the chance to try Innis and Gunn beer then jump at it. "Vanilla, toffee and orange aromas, with a malty, lightly oaked, lemon and chocolate palate. Deftly balanced and light in texture, soothing and warm in the finish." Or so they say, and I can't argue with that. The oak finishing process really does make for a unique taste, though personally I prefer the standard stuff to the limited edition.

For UK-dwellers, a pleasant surprise is the Co-Op own brand range of beers. They're actually brewed by big name breweries and repackaged for Co-Op, with a slightly more budget supermarket price. :) The organic ale is particularly good, which it shares with quite a few other organic beers - the Caledonian brewery does a particularly good one.

And I'll leave you with one of the more peculiar beers I ever had the pleasure of tasting. Stonehenge Ales' somewhat incredible Sign of Spring. It's a very smooth seasonal beer with a light and... well, spring-like flavour to it.

Oh, and it's green.

never get enough, its either I throw up or go to sleep to stop :P

I have bunch of Coronas right now, just bought a six-pack few days ago, but I don't think its my type

Foster's rocks too :P

a-fucking-men. I was sooo hyped to try it, then I did and it was awful. Though, it's not the WORST. Try some Bell's Cherry Ale... the shit tastes like they didn't even finish brewing it. Just straight wheat and caramel coloring. Ugh. Seriously almost made me gag, and I can drink damn near ANYTHING... that's called beer.

To me, Beer is like my childrens. I love them all, but some of them are just stupid and not worth talking to or pretending to be related to. That said, there is one that shines above all others, one beer forged in pits of darkness, one beer to rule them all:

You are just off the ball tonight Raoul.

Hacker Pschorr for me. $1.50 a bottle but its pretty heavy so I feel the effects of it after the second bottle where it takes about 8 cans of Bud.

I'm far from a beer snob but there's two types of The Experiment when it comes to drinking beer:

Chilling with friends - I prefer imported beer because its better tasting. I've had a lot of them and Hacker Pschorr works for me.

Out at parties - whatever's on tap. Its pretty weaksauce beer (especially keg beer) so I need to drink 8-10 glasses of this water/beer combo to feel anything.

I generally like cold, light lagers. Current preferred choices

Stella Artois (only in France though, doesn't taste as nice in the UK)
Miller Genuine Draft
Lapin Kulta
Asahi Super Dry

there is no Best Beer. obviously.

but all beers are not created equal.

the English, German, and Belgian make the best beer in the world. <---thats a period. in no particular order, and all my opinion, but its true.

there are also a TON of really really high quality wonderfully brewed American beers (as im sure there is in every country around the world): Long Trail, Otter Creek, Anchor Steam, Sam Adams, Harpoon, a ton of others.

you get what you pay for when you buy beer. that cheap ass commercial shit has become very much undrinkable to me. i get a hangover before i get a buzz and it tastes like shit.

im not ashamed to say that im a beer snob.

I recommend all of you to try "Duvel" it's a bit hard to find this beer outside Belgium though.. it's not as commercial as Stella Artois but it sure is, and for many other Belgian people, their favorite one.. it's 8,5 percent of alcohol

besides Duvel I prefer Palm, Leffe, Hoegaarden.. that's right, I'm proud to be from Belgium xD

This is my favorite beer...no beer has topped it for me... It is one of the only things I reeeeeeaaaaalllly miss from Seattle... I think you can get it on the West Coast but it is brewed in Redmond Washington...

logo-mac-and-jacks.jpg

The African Amber is heaven in a class...or better yet a pitcher..

I tried Duvel the other week in its little stubby bottle, and it reminded me of Grolsch with a shot of vodka in it! That's strong stuff!

Duvel is easy to find at a good sotre that carries imports.

Korenwolf and White Trappist are way tastier then Wieckse Witte and (to a lesser extent) Hoegaarden in my opinion.. I like Grolsch and Hertog Jan (the latter being a great beer to get people into beer, since it has such a soft taste), Strongbow's great Cider-beer. Goudband's great (though obscure) dark/blonde beer. A tad expensive for €1.5 the bottle though :/

Exactly. Damn, I'll fucking drink Natty light if my buddy gives to me (and he has many a time). I am definitely not a snob.
