Best ending credits roll song

God, I can't believe some people are listing the SOTN credit song. IT IS TERRIBLE! It doesn't fit with the feel of the game at all. People who liked that song should be dragged out into the street and shot!

I've got to say Beyond Good & Evil. The game had one of my favorite soundtracks but the ending credits in particular left a strong impression on me.

Small Two of Pieces from Xenogears is my personal favorite, but I like Chrono Cross's end song almost as much as well as, yes, Chocobo Racing's Treasure Chest of the Heart.

Somnia Memorias from Parasite Eve was great as well. The mix of Spanish and Latin was rather interesting and I love the way it opens with the flowing water and chirping birds after the intense end sequence.

Star Ocean 3 had a pretty cool credit roll, but I don't remmeber the music all that well, which is odd since it is the last game I finished (other than Minish Cap).

Most classic NES Megaman ending themes were great, even if they weren't much to look at. I seem to recall liking the theme used in 2 and 4 more than the others, but it's been a long time.

OMFG! How could I forget N!ghts: into dreams? I loved the vocals. First time I heard a fake Boyz 2 Men group in a video game! :lol Its awesome. My best friend got married to that song.

Edit:

I must add Sonic CD to this list. "Sonic booom sonic booom" :D

Some of my picks have been already mentioned, but I want to develop on them:

The ending credits of Shenmue were just amazing. They were an uninventive 8-minute flow of little-sized text showing people, more people, even more people, and some other companies involved in the game, so they gave a good idea of the scale of the whole Shenmue project. The background music was a minimalistic piano-only remix of the soundtrack's two main themes, and it fit the mood perfectly. I personally had more interest and enjoyed them way more than those of Shenmue II, were the minimalistic piano was changed for the many times heard full orchestrated version of the themes, the background was filled with unnecessary screenshots of the game and, well, you were still shocked by the abrupt ending of the game.

Then, I still remember the background song of the Sonic 3 (without Knuckles) credits. Not because it was specially good, in fact it was a somewhat soft song that, breaking the 'medley' tradition of previous Sonic games, really added to the rushed and incomplete feeling of the Sonic 3 ending.

Melodies of Life - Final Fantasy IX

I appreciate you. I seriously thought no one would mention it. To me, it was one of the most emotional ending songs in any game I've played, after the storybook ending. The way it translates into "Final Fantasy" at the end is simply beyond words.

Super Metroid and Metroid Prime are also "goosebump good".

It absolutely matchs the character of Alucard and the place he's at the end. A somber mellow piece.

No it doesn't. It is an insult to the rest of the game. This style of music has no place in any castlevania game.

I forgot to mention Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, awesome end credits song, sometimes i'll just play a quick 4th tournament just to hear it.

Oh! and Majora's Masks is very good too. and Pikmin 2 :D

Metal Gear Solid - The Best Is Yet To Come
Kingdom Hearts - Simple and Clean
Final Fantasy IX - Melodies of Life

Some other games that I liked the ending themes to but don't recall the song names for:

Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VI, VII
Lunar: The Silver Star and Eternal Blue
Shadow Hearts
Onimusha
Samurai Warriors

I kinda liked FFVII's ending, with the "drums".

Now, if it was only orchestrated instead of synth.

Heavy spoilers on Conker's Bad Fur Day in black.

I may sound quite insistent or redundant, but -again- I really think Conker's Bad Fur Day had one of the most appropriate end credits songs, especially at the moment you become aware of the simple fact that the fun is over
because the ending contains the exact same shot pattern of sacred Conker sitting on his throne the game opened with. Then, they show you Conker re-sinking into alcohol, desperately trying to overcome the death of his dulcinea. And at the moment you know the only thing that changed since the beginning is a dark one, they close their story on a really depressing tone, abruptly contrasting with the overall humor of this piece. Here is the song (title containing spoilers >_<)... http://www.rareware.com/extra/downloads/bfd/conker_the_king_reprise.mp3
Agreed. The sad, dramatic tune after what happened almost lashed a tear to my eye.

wtf, nobody said Super Mario World?

I absolutely love that credits song. :\

Super Mario World's credits music is pretty cool too. I got one of those Super Famicom osts that has that tune played live

Yes it does.

Lyrics? Perfectly match his personality

"Just like the wind,
I've always been
Drifting high up in the sky that never ends
Through thick and thin,
I always win
'Cause I would fight both life and death to save a friend

I face my destiny every day I live
And the best in me is all I have to give

Just like the sun (Just like the sun)
When my day's done
Sometimes I don't like the person I've become
Is the enemy within a thousand men?
Should I walk the path if my world's so dead ahead?

Is someone testing me every day I live?
Well, the best in me is all I have to give

I can pretend (I can pretend)
I am the wind (I am the wind)
And I don't know if I will pass this way again
All things must end
Goodbye, my friend
Think of me when you see the sun or feel the wind

I am the wind,
I am the sun
And one day we'll all be one"

The change of tune is to show Alucard's change.

So if you put those lyrics to a polka theme it would fit too? The lyrics may fit, but when it's set to some cringingly bad jazz crap, it ruins it all.

I thought Sonic 2 had great ending music. It was a remix of all the various stage music into one song. Very well done.

And Sonic CD not only had cool end music but the credit sequence itself was damn cool, especially for the time. It was like watching movie credits with the sweet anime video playing up in the corner while the credits scrolled by. Awesome.

Panzer Dragoon RPG, hands down.

Yes.

Just listened to the ending video that Blimblim made of ORTA's ending and I have to say there is no way it beats SAGA's ending music. Still tight tho.

I clearly remember that ending
The grass is always greener
kinda chilled my bones when he first said it.

Man, then, I'm not the only one to hear it when depressed (that means often). Don't know if it is a thing I should be proud of.

Beleive it or not, Dead or Alive 2. I really enjoyed that song.

Actually, that's probably my favorite thing about the game. The end song is really awesome in how it transitions from moody piano to rock. Good pick.

Star Fox for the SNES. I remember when I heard the end music for the first time, I thought that the music was actually orchestrated at parts (particularly the string parts).

Huh, only two mentions of Vagrant Story's staff roll.

Well here's a third, VAGRANT STORY!

Oh & yes, Tekken Tag's end credits song is indeed fuckin' godly!

Legend of Zelda Series:

Link to the Past - Very rewarding, kind of peaceful.
Link's Awakening - Very beautiful, considering the hardware. The fact that it's Malon's song and if you beat the game with 0 deaths you see her with wings singing at the very end just made it that much more memorable. God, I love this game. The ending was really sad..man...I want a remake of this..
Ocarina of Time - Enough said
The Wind Waker - Wonderful closing melody..enjoyed the bubbles in water animation of all the characters you met.

Super Mario Bros Series:

Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario 64

Mario Kart Series:

Mario Kart 64
Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

Metroid Series:

Super Metroid
Metroid Prime

Final Fantasy Series:

Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy IX Touching melody of life song, given the circumstances of the ending. Very heart-tugging.
Final Fantasy Tactics The entire game had a wonderful soundtrack!

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow

Earthbound

Secret of Mana

Metal Gear Solid

Naruto Gekitou Ninja Taisen 3

Oh, and to all the people who are listing FFVIII's ending theme, a lot of it is remixed from FFIV. But I doubt most of you'd know that. :P

Fatal Frame 2 - Chou
Xenogears
Megaman 2
Megaman X
Megaman 7
Battle Arena Toshinden 2 (In fact the whole sountrack was awesome)
Popful Mail (Mega CD version)
Vay (and again the entire OST was awesome)
Mario 64
Mario Kart 64
