I agree about Streets of Rage to Steets of Rage 2, but the original Phantasy Star was a classic. one of the all-time best RPGs. the first true console RPG released in the United States.
I agree with you. Phantasy Star II is a classic, but I don't like the fact that they removed the Psuedo-3D dungeons and I don't like how it lets you choose which enemy it lets you attack. The traps in the dungeons get rather tedious as well. I love PS II, but the original is much better.

That's actually the third game in the series.

?

Are you refering to the Metroid game that appeared on the GameBoy?
If so then yeah I guess it is the sequel.
I consider true sequels to be on consoles myself but its all the same I guess.

... is the game that made me stop playing the main series.

I love Sonic the Hedgehog. It is simply magical everytime. And I'd put it in my top 10 games of all time. Sonic 2, OTOH, bored me to tears and killed my passion.

what...??

*explodes*

STAY KRUNK MOTHERFUCKERS!

Street Fighter 2
Resident Evil 2
Baldur's Gate 2
Warcraft 2
Diablo 2

Damn Li'l Jon has destroyed my english :lol

Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.
oowh! Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, yes indeed.. superb game for his times.. Metal Gear was pretty basic back then, but Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake was such a true sequel.. love Big Boss his quote in the ending of that game.

The most memorable for me were Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage 2 - they were just so much better than the original games. Some others from recent generations:

Wipeout 2097 - still the best in the series, streets aheads of the first game.

Virtua Tennis 2 - Not such a leap from the first game but it did have a lot more gameplay elements that made it better such as the ability to control the type of shot you made.

Fade to Black - I loved Flashback (still do) but FTB was great because it introduced perhaps the best soundtrack I have ever heard in a game and managed to incorporate some of elements that made Flashback so great.

Rayman 2 - Only the DC version here. I never played the first game but I can't imagine it being better than the second game. 60fps 3D platformer with beautiful art direction and controls. Perhaps the best learning curve ever in a platforming game (at least on par with the Super Mario games).

is this the gb version? I remember it was stated in a magazine that the gb version was based on the N64 version and not the other way around.

Wasn't the first Waverace actually a boat racing game, yet it was never released and later reworked to become Waverace 64? If that's the case I'd say this theory is correct.

Anyhow, back on topic. I echo the Street Fighter 2 sentiment.

Hmm, Speedball 2?

I don't think there is another game mentioned in the thread with as much as an improvement from Street Fighter to SFII

Maybe Double Dragon II on the NES is a contender.

Geez, I dont remember. I just looked for Wave Race for the gameboy and that's the picture I got. Maybe I got things backwards.

The GB game came out in 1992, 4 years before Waverace 64. Besides, if Waverace 64 was the first game in the series, why would it have the 64 naming scheme?

Super Smash Bros: Melee!

Tons more characters, stages, moves, music, items, strategy, and smooth as butter framerate. Not to forget the trophies.

My personal favorite would probably be Dragon Warrior II, but there's nothing that beats the leap in quality between the first two Street Fighters.

I'm not sure about this game but how was Star Control 1? I really liked Star Control 2. Was the first game anywhere near as good or did it suck? Was System Shock 1 any good? Noone ever talks about SS1 but always go crazy about SS2.

I'd say Freespace 2, but I'm not really sure it applies to the topic since the first one was gold aswell. :)

Almost the same goes for Civ 2.. but Civ 2 I say. :D

or.. Warcraft 2 -> Warcraft

Street Fighter II & Fatal Fury 2.
Those two original games were some of the worst playing games (you practically had to pray for special moves to come out when you wanted to pull them off), but both sequels were two of the best playing fighters of that generation.

Yeah the first Fatal Fury stunk as well. I don't think I ever pulled off some of the specials in the first one.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Sonic 1 was AMAZING. And Sonic 2 did nothing but improve on the formula. Longer game. Same quality of level design but larger in scale. A more refined look. Faster. A spin dash. Fantastic music once again. Versus play.

More than I ever expected in a sequel.

My second choice would be Virtua Fighter 2.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 got lots of play time on my Dreamcast between me, friends, and my sister.

Shenmue II is also a great one that improved in many ways on the original.

Golden Sun: The Lost Age is in the same boat as Shenmue II.

Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins was awesome back in the day. Dunno if it still holds up, but I loved it.

Metal Gear (2): Solid Snake has my vote. The game is leagues ahead of the first. Ridge Racer Revolution comes to mind, Ys II certainly. Does Metal Warriors count as a sequel to Cybernator? =).

Yoshi's Island
Pikmin 2
FZero X
Resident Evil 2
Mortal Kombat 2
Ratchet&C 2

just to mention a few. Yay for castlevania 2 & Waverace 64!

How'd I forget that one. And it technically wasn't even a sequel, but a continuation... yet somehow was miles better than the first.

Unless I missed it, I'm stunned and saddened that no one has mentioned the best sequel (and it's a first sequel also) ever:-

Thread over.

Was System Shock 1 any good?

Indeed it was way ahead of it's time, and can still be played on PC with a bit of tweaking. Great game.
