I said sound quality was a factor.
iPod NANO has the same sound quality of the iPod shuffle.
That is to say the sound quality is shit.
I also said that features were a factor, audio features specificially. Color screen is nice, but I already have 2 HDD MP3 players that do it better. It's also too big, a fingerprint/scratch magnet. I don't need a color screen on a flash based MP3 player. I just need something small and FUNCTIONAL.
Edit: Although the iRiver U10's touch screen and video support is interesting, but video is unneeded for a flash based MP3 player... The cradle and everything else is fucking awsome though...

It's as if you were all professional sound engineers. Your portable mp3 player doesn't need to be fucking reference quality. Heaven forbid you ever had to use a real walkman like some more 'mature' people here, would your ears have bled ? No.

For an HD MP3 player the iPod interface is just fine. For a small MP3 player to be used quickly while engaged in other activities it is not. I wouldn't want my X5 or H320 interface on a flash MP3 player either.

What kind of interface do you want ? What's wrong with iPods interface ? How you can make it better I have no idea, but you seem to. Please tell (you should cc it to apple to, seeing as how you know more about the subject of interface design).

Sucks depending on your taste. I listen to talk radio though so it doesn't really matter. I never really use the lineout on the X5.
How about you? Hows the fantastic quality of the lineout on your iPod? How's your 35 hour battery life? How's your FLAC, OGG Vorbis, WAV support? How's your only being able to transfer files if you have iTunes? How's your USB on the go? How's your video playback? How's your FM radio? How's your sound quality? How's your hundreds upon hundreds of EQ settings?
15 FPS ain't too bad for cartoons like South Park and Family Guy. I get to school 30 minutes early each day and I'll tell you that having every episode of Family Guy, South Park, Futurama, AND every album I own in 320KBPS VBR(200+ cds that I physically own :3) is a real bonus. Would I watch it just for the shit of it? No.
Would I watch it when I'm sitting and waiting for an hour with nothing to do? Fuck yes, and it's perfectly ledgible.
For a FLASH player, I want something I can easily navigate without even having to look. iPod Shuffle got that right, and most everything else wrong.
I don't want to sit and scroll wheel my way through a bunch of crap while I'm running, cycling, on the go in general.

The best flash based MP3 player wouldn't have the subpar sound quality the NANO has. It also wouldn't be as big a fingerprint and scratch magnet. It would also be easier to navigate on the fly without even looking. It would also have the option of switching between radio and music. It wouldn't have it's headphone jack on the bottom of the player. It would also have either a longer battery life, or use of a single AAA battery.
Best is subjective, but the reasons I just listed are what make the Nano FAR from the best for me.

I've never used the little cube MP3 player, any of the Cowon or iRiver flash based MP3 players which is what both of the companies are famous for in the first place. Never used a creative flash player.
I don't know a lot about flash players, I just know enough about the iPod Nano to know that it's not on the list of best anything, for me at least. If I wanted a small capacity iPod I would get a Mini. Better sound quality and I like them better overall. Only difference really is the type of memory and the amount of memory.
I know the iPod interface and I know that it's not something I want to bother with while I'm trying to control my breathing and running on a treadmill.
BTW- When it comes to audio and visual projects and studio recording I really am Apples biggest fan. If I had the money I would get protools and a G5, unfortunately I'm stuck using it in a music class in school and over other peoples houses.
I SPDIF audio from my PC to my stereo so I don't care.
I don't stay awake constantly listening to music for 35 hours at a time.
ipod can play WAVs. If it's FLAC I can easily reencode to whatever the fuck I want, and if it's OGG I probably didn't download it.

FM is worthless to me aside from NPR, and I can get that webcast, or podcast in some cases.

Yeah Lemur what mp3 player do you use (either flash or hard drive based) since you seem to have a good idea of what works and doesn't? I'm looking to buy one and want to get the best bang for the buck (and don't necessarily need an ipod one).

what is the point in carrying around hundreds of tunes, tunes YOU PICK, to listen to the radio. and about the only argument I've ever heard that bears some meaning is to listen to NPR which I won't buy that Lemur is old enough to want to do.
As for sound quality of the nano, the only huge and unfixable complaint of the non-shuffle ipods was the background noise thought to be generated by the hard drives. Now with the nano it has been found that the background noise is gone. the only remaining issue is when you use crappy 25-30ohm ear buds with the nano the bass response rolls off. answer of course to me seems to be not to use some crappy 25-30ohm ear buds. the Shure E2Cs for example are 16ohm buds and have NO bass issues with the ipods. yes I realize that not all 25-30ohm ear buds are crappy, but the non-crappy ones at least don't seem to have as much bass roll off as the cheap crappy ones.
I have a Nomand Muvo 1GB that I like a lot. I'd gladly choose it over an iPod Shuffle or iPod nano. I probably won't get another MP3 player until there is an XM/FM/MP3 hybrid or the prices on media jukeboxes come down significantly.
Radio is important. I listen to NPR all day, and switch over to MP3s when they repeat a program or when Diane Rehm has a shitty guest (or when I'm sick of her voice). There's currently like 200+ back-episodes of This American Life, and I'll probably work my way through all of them so long as I stay working at a place that lets me listen to stuff all day.
The Nomad Muvo also doubles as a flash drive, and doesn't need any stupid fucking cables or stupid fucking software to get what you want onto the player.
I guess the only downside of it is that it doesn't have a rechargable battery, but I'll pick up some rechargable AAAs and a charging station sooner or later. As I see it, this was a purchase already necessitated by next-gen consoles' reliance on wireless controllers....so no big deal.
