Best Game Soundtracks

el jacko said:
Beyond Good & Evil The game nobody plays that everyone loves, and one of the major drawing points is its soundtrack. Containing some of the most touching themes in recent memory right alongside some of the strangest and more imaginative songs in a game. Another one that gets the vocals right. It is a real shame so few people picked up the game, since I'm sure this soundtrack would get more mainstream attention had it been more popular.

i totally agree - i love the guitar-strum-y sorta thing when you get a new item :D

Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill 3
Jet Set Radio
Phantasy Star Online v1/v2
Axelay
Chrono Trigger
Pikmin
Street Fighter Zero 2
King of Fighters 96
King of Fighters 99
Garou: Mark of the Wolves
Contra: THe Hard Corps
Shinobi 2
Shinobi 3
Streets of Rage 2

Just finished Tales of Rebirth, that had a pretty memorable OST
Growlanser 1
Ys VI
Ys: Oath in Felghana
Digital Devil Saga 1-2
Neo Contra
Guilty Gear XX#R (any one after X really)
Seiken Densetsu 3 has a nice one too

Dragon Quest III
PSO
Streets Of Rage 2

Those are the 3 that just popped into my head. DQIII is on there for good, but the other 2 are debatable for me... Excellent nonetheless.

Panzer Dragoon Saga
Skies of Arcadia (DC version)
Shenmue
Ico (only two good songs, but still enough to make it awesome)
Turrican Series
Chrono Trigger
Parasite Eve 1

There are so many, but the #1 game soundtrack for me is unquestionably...

Chrono Cross

In no order:

Castlevania: SotN/DoS/LoI
Shadow of the Collosus
Paper Mario 2
Skies of Arcadia
Planescape Torment
No One Lives Forever
Eternal Darkness
Baten Kaitos
The Warcraft Series (WoW and WCIII)
Morrowind/NeverWinterNights (ie. Jeremy Soule :D)
Chrono Trigger/Cross
Prince of Persia: SoT
Final Fantasy 6/7/9
Secret of Mana/Seiken Densetsu 3
Terranigma
Super Metroid/Metroid Prime
Beyond good & Evil

Anarchy Online has an awesome and very underrated sci-fi soundtrack. More powerful, foreboding, and beautiful than either Halo game, and many other sci-fi games like the recent Advent Rising.

what do you think are the best game soundtracks? pick 3.

for me it would be

1. Megaman 2
2. jet grind radio
3. Ico

I'm Ron Burgundy?
I was just about to type up a response about how assy game music is and then, at the last minute, regret even typing it and hit the BACK button but then I saw your list and I am now happy

my list would look something like this though:

1. Megaman 2 or 3 (both great, choose one)
2. Sonic 1 or 2 (same as above)
3. Jet Grind Radio

Don't think anyone has mentioned it yet...but Half-Life 1. Protip: You can put the game CD in a CD player and it will play the soundtrack. Um, 2 others... I'll go with Shadow of the Colossus and Lumines. I'd have to get all RPG on this thread if it was more than 3 though.

Perfect Dark Zero (except for the ultra shitty title theme) X360

Wipeout Pure PSP

F Zero GX, F Zero 64 and F Zero SNES

Actraiser SNES

Zelda SNES

A few Megamans, K.O.Fs, Streetfighter and Metal Gear themes too.

I've always enjoyed the music in the FF series. I also just recently discovered some of Sakuraba's music and it shits all over any of Uematsu's recent stuff.

I also liked the licensed GTA soundtracks. I thought Vice City had a great selection of songs. I had never really liked 80s music very much but VC gave a me a little more appreciation.

Final Fantasy IV - Celtic Moon
Guilty Gear X - Heavy Rock Tracks
Einhander

So many more great soundtracks to list but I actually tried to limit myself to 3! :lol

Since this topic comes up every couple of hours, I'll do something different with my list...I'll pick soundtracks that work perfectly on their own, with no nostalgia involved(buh bye chiptunes). Albums that are just filled with damn well composed and played music, not just nostalgic video game music with catchy tunes and themes(buh bye 99.9% of Nintendo's games). Note: I love the music of Nintendo's top tier franchises. :P Also, these be original soundtracks, not seperately released arranged albums.

1.- Xenosaga (Sleigh Bells edition, only Disc I) - Yasunori Mitsuda

An epic space operatic masterpiece, this is Mitsuda's best and most complex work to date(ditch the rose-tinted glasses, CT's OST is not even on the same galaxy). With the London Philharmonic Orchestra lending their talented players and the Metro Voices lending their vocal chords, no other game soundtrack even approaches this on a technical level. Soundtrack has a dark, somber tone...fitting for the space theme I guess. :P Just excellent stuff, worthy of a listen even if you don't care/give a shit about the game(personally, I barely do).

Personal favorite: "Omega". Just fucking badass.

Note: DISC 1 of the reprint edition of the soundtrack(released by YM's label) contains all the *real* tracks of the soundtrack(the stuff played by the London Philharmonic), the track order is orders of magnitude better than the one in the original release. DISC 2 is entirely forgettable and discardable as all the in-game music(read: synth-based) was dumped on it, rendering entirely worthless.

2.- Shadow of the Colossus - Kô Ôtani

I had already fallen in love with this soundtrack literally more than a year before the game was released, ever since the first video was leaked I was lovin' Ôtani's work. I went as far as making mp3s out of the videos released by game sites, and personally ripped the music from the american website. In short, I had listened to most of the soundtrack before the game was even released...just crazy. Majestic is the word to describe this soundtrack, the themes work perfectly and make you feel as if you're in the middle of battle, even if you've never even touched the game. Like Xenosaga, Kô Ôtani uses real instruments to drive his compositions. The ending themes in particular are very powerful.

Personal favorite: "Counterattack". This bitch hits all the right notes exactly when it has to.

3.- Soukaigi - Hiroki Kikuta

I'd say that this OST is freaking energetic. I don't know SHIT about the game, never played it, I'm not even sure if I ever saw a picture of it. I pretty much stumbled upon a couple of tracks from the album by accident some years ago. Kikuta uses a mix of high-end synths and real instruments here. It's pretty different from my other two picks, the music in here is much more eclectic in nature, some of the tracks being downright ethnic, with a bit of middle eastern influence. The guitar-based tracks are particularly bitchin', with plenty of nice playing. I don't understand how Kikuta isn't getting any jobs in the industry, what the fuck is wrong with game companies.

Personal favorite: "Fire Wire". Rockin'.

I wasn't even going to post in this thread until I realized nobody posted Valkyrie Profile. That game had a great soundtrack and is easily in my top 2. The other is Chrono Cross.

Without a doubt, Xenogears is the best.

Coming in second place would be

Chrono Trigger

and 3rd I'm going to give to FFVI, slightly edging out FFVIII.

They may not be the *best*, but they're my favorite this gen:

Metroid Prime + Prime 2
Baten Kaitos
Zelda: The Wind Waker
FF:CC

Old Favorites:

Actraiser
Final Fantasy 3 (US)
Chronno Trigger
Super CastleVania 4
Super Mario World
Super Ghouls and Ghosts
OoT

Chrono Cross (By far the best, IMO)
Castlevanis: SOTN
Final Fantasy VI
Actraiser
Soul Blazer
Dragon Warriors (plural, lots of borrowed songs that travel across the series)
etc.

I believe my initial interest in RPGs started with the music. I remember watching my cousin play Dragon Warrior when I was about 6 years old and I'd get the music stuck in my head long afterwards. My favorite RPGS since then also happen to contain my favorite soundtracks in all gaming, period.

I just got to the FF6 opera scene (first time through).

AM CRY AT BEAUTIFUL MUSIC

Are you being sarcastic? If not, you're so lucky to be experiencing that right now :-D It was truly amazing 10 years ago when I never thought that quality of music could be produced on the 16-bit systems.

killer7

could list a few more, but this is the only one I can come up with that hasn't already been mentioned. some really great techno/jazz stuff in there.

No sarcasm. It's brilliant.

The "voice" is well done considering...you know, lack of vocal track. I'm playing the PSX version...I wish they made that an FMV scene and added in voice. Still wonderful.

Finally, SOMEONE mentioned the EarthBound Soundtrack.

A soundtrack that has variety & quality and cheeseburgers.

Although Ive already posted my 3, its a damn shame that nobody posted, or ever does post, the music from the Onimusha series. Great stuff.

Shenmue I/II
MGS3
MGS1
FFVII
FFX
ICO
SMB1 & SMW (Huge addition to their success. As addictive as the gameplay)
GTA VC (if it counts - love the opening use of "Broken Wings" before he leaves for Vice City)

Katamari Damacy
Rez
Suikoden I

edit: I'm kicking myself for not getting Chrono Cross in here, but I also have no idea which of those 3 I'd drop to make room for it :\

Street Fighter III New generation/Third Strike
Shenmue I
Castlevania Symphony of the Night

VF4
Shinobi PS2

Did I miss it or noone mentioned Planescape Torment ?

FF:CC's soundtrack was pretty awesome too IMO, as well as SotC.
