Best Mario Platformer?

StoOgE

First tragedy, then farce.
First, thanks go to Nintendo for whoring Mario out so much that I cant just put "Best Mario Game" in the title... Since getting a DS, Ive recently repurchased all the mario games (sans the original) for the NES and SNES, as well as Mario 64. Played through Sunshine at a friends house not long ago, and replayed Mario 64 on the 64 (to make sure it wasnt the DS version that clouded my fondness). I didnt get to play the Mario Land games, but I played them in my youth, and remember allways being pretty disapointed by them.

First of all, I would like to say, Marios transition to 3d wasnt pretty. At the time, I thought it was the greatest game ever, but in hindsight (and no longer being amazed by moving in 3d) Mario 64 simply put does not hold up well when compared to the 2d classics. The controls arent as tight, the level designs are far too open and the game lacks the "twitch" gameplay that made the originals so great. For fun, I popped in the original Crash for PS1 and despite everyone making fun of it when it came out (for not being 'real' 3d) it holds up as a better platformer than Mario 64. Sunshine, pales in comparison to Mario 64. This isnt to say that these arent good games, but they fall far short of the greatness of the classics (so does Crash, but Crash feels more like a 2d platformer gone 3d).

Also, platformers used to be much longer.. Back in the day, we would have laughed at a meager 15 level game.. nowadays thats a high number.

So my list:

1) Super Mario Brothers 3. When I was little I never actually played all the way through the game, I was far too concerned with grabbing whistles and blazing through the game way too quickly. Now that Ive actually sat down and gone through the entire thing, playing all of the levels, this game is beyond awesome. Great level designs all around, almost every one of them is a classic. Boss Fights are phenomenal. Best set of powerups in Mario games.

2) Yoshi's Island. Biggest departure in the series since Mario 2, but it worked on every single level. The platforming is almost up to par with Mario 3, plus you have the really well done egg shooting bits. Minus points for Baby Mario screaming.. also, the timer makes the game easier than most Marios.. in the past one or two hits would do you in, in this one you had a bit more leeway.. Boss fights are the best the series has ever had. Map screen was also disapointing after the greatness that was SMW.. the lack of powerups was disapointing, and the Little Nemo esque morphing bits were disapointing.

3) Super Mario World - HUGE game. Dont know if it is the biggest Mario game or not, but it sure as hell feels like it. Star Road, all the hidden paths on the overworld.. phenomenal overworld.. the powerups were a bit of a letdown after the great set in SM3, but they were good too.

4) Super Mario Brothers/Lost Levels - again, in my youth I mainly cheated my way through the game quickly.. but I had the chance to sit down with a copy of Super Mario Allstars, and play through both this and the lost levels, and the game holds up pretty well to this day. The early levels in this game are laughably easy compared to what was thrown at us in later Mario games, but by the later levels it really got going. The boss fights werent very good, but the build up to them is really great.. something as stupid as fireballs being spit at you the length of the level adds alot to the experience. Also, classic powerups arent as good as what we got later, but something feels right about them.

5) Super Mario 2. Yeah, wierd game, not really a Mario game.. but it was alot of fun.. little mini boss fights thrown throughout the level, great variety in charachters.. plus those bits where you had to dig through the sand, grab the key and run from those fucking masks is awesome. Have really fond memories of this game as a kid, for whatever reason this is the one that brings back all the nostalgia. I can still remember getting up at the ass crack of dawn on Saturdays and turning the volume really low in the living room in hopes that my parents would sleep in so I could get a little further.

6) Mario 64. Good game, but it doesnt feel like Mario. Great boss battles, great gameplay variety.. way too short, and the only truly great levels were the ones before you fought bowser... they are the ones that feel like mario levels should.. big minus points, because some of the stars are just inane to try and find, and the hints they give you are ass.

7) Mario Sunshine - hmm.. its Mario in 3d again.. and instead of going for the level types I cared for in Mario 64 (the less open levels before you fought bowser) they went with more wide open stuff.. plus a really bad story.. and a water gun whos controls are broken.

8) Yoshi's Story.. maybe its the fact that I beat it in 2 hours in my first playthrough and never died.. but this game had ugly graphics, was boring as hell, and WAAAAY to easy.

Im sure Im forgetting some, but would like to hear your thoughts on the real mario games.. oh, and hears hoping Mario DS lives up to the legacy of the old school Mario games... 2d Platformers > 3d Platformers.

Edit: The Wario game for the Virtual Boy deserves a mention in here somewhere, that game was really really good.. out of all the games I bought for the system (I bought them all) it and verticle force were the two worth having.

Minus points for Baby Mario screaming.. also, the timer makes the game easier than most Marios.. in the past one or two hits would do you in, in this one you had a bit more leeway..

The whole point of the screaming is to be annoying. When they were testing the game, they found players just left Baby Mario until the last second to grab, not the way they wanted it to be played. So they tried various things (I can't remember what, but making him fall fast and reducing the timer seem obvious ones), but still it didn't work. Eventually they hit on the idea of giving Baby Mario an obnoxious cry when not with a Yoshi, and it worked! Also fits well with the baby theme anyway.

So if it pissed you off, it was a job well done.

Oh and Yoshi's Island for me.

Yeah, I know why Baby Mario screamed, but it didnt make it less anoying :p

Oh, and one more admission from a one time huge Sega fan.. Mario is a far far far better series than Sonic in every way imaginable. Wouldnt have been caught dead saying that a few years ago.. and I still like Sonic games, but I replayed part of Sonic 2 the other day, and it just doesnt hold up.

Yoshi's Island, SMB3, and SMB for me.
The original has to be there for the absolutely perfect control and character weight. No platformer since has nailed it like SMB did.

SMB3 (best physics, mario feels like he actually has some weight, I love the big-small world)
SMWorld (too floaty but lots of secrets)
SMB1 (classic)
SM64 (I fucking hate collecting stars, but it was pretty amazing for the first couple hours)
SMB2 (:x)

Never played Yoshi's Island and too poor to get ahold of a new memory card for Sunshine.

Yoshi's Island
Mario 64
SMB 3
SM World
SMB 2

I was completely surprised by the Bowser boss fight at the end of Yoshi's Island.
Plus it has monkeys and ninjas.

When considering the 2D titles my elitist side says Yoshi's Island. But the side that enjoys pure fun says Mario World.

But Mario 64 is my favorite Mario title, hands down. With Sunshine coming close. Sunshine just nailed the control and fun factor. I'm sorry, but the jet pack was a godsend. It allowed you to mess up and save your ass in a squeeze. Brilliant idea.

Yoshi's Island. This is also one of the most criminally overlooked games ever. Most people I try and convince to buy it at work just scoff because you mainly use Yoshi. FOOLS!

Mario 3 is second, but very closely tailed by Mario World. I think that Mario 3 is a better designed game overall, I have more fun and replay value with Mario world.

In order of quality (best to worst)

Yoshi's Island
Super Mario World
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Land 2
Super Mario Brothers 2 USA
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Brothers 3
Super Mario Brothers
Super Mario Brothers 2 JP
Super Mario Land

Yoshi's Island. I'm only sad I didn't get to play it sooner (my first experience with it was the GBA version). Amazing game.

As for the rest, SMB3 and SMW are approximately tied, depending on what I'm in the mood for. I've never cared for the original SMB or Mario 64, although Sunshine is a pretty fun (if not somewhat un-Marioesque) game.

SMB is and always will be my favourate game of all time.... It's really amazing! You can sit there playing it for hours or just go through in a quick 10 min sitting and it never gets boring..... I really don't think I'll have as much fun with another game. o.o

I like 'em all almost equally. Each game has a certain charm that a sequel or prequel doesn't replicate well. Super Mario World had the best worlds, Super Mario Bros. 3 had the best suits and music, the original was the most simple, 64 felt very epic and Sunshine had a relaxed feel to it. All are great in their own way. I hope the DS game lives up to expectations.

My Top 5:

Super Mario Bros 3
Super Mario World
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Bros/Lost Levels
Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins

I was never a huge fan of Yoshi's Island personally even though I will admit it is a good game.

1. Either SMB or Mario 64. SMB got me really into gaming, I had played Coleco and Atari before but they didn't do it for me. Currently 64 is the best Mario game.
3. SMW
4. Sunshine
5. SMB3
6. SMB2
7. Lost Levels
8. Yoshi's Island(not really a Mario game despite the name)

Top 5:

Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario World
Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land
Super Mario Bros. 2 US
Super Mario Sunshine

Why do you say these things, when you know I shall kill you for it?

(I overlooked this blasphemous sentence upon first reading. But hey, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.)

1. Super Mario World
2. Super Mario Bros 3
3. Super Mario 64
5. Yoshi's Island
6. Super Mario Land 2
7. Super Mario Bros/ Lost levels
8. Sunshine
9. Super Mario Bros 2
10. Super Mario Land

Yoshi's Island is an embarassment to platformers everywhere. Of the Mario games I've played, they rank as:

1. Mario 64
2. Super Mario World
3. Super Mario Brothers 3
4. Super Mario Brothers 2
5. Super Mario Brothers
6. Super Mario Sunshine

I just looked at your top and agreed already on the order you put the games.... so i didn't bother reading the description of each of them. SMB3 and Yoshi's Island fo life. ;)

I discovered several years ago that people either love or hate Yoshi's Island, and I was shocked that so many hated it.

It's the best platform game ever, but yeah, to each his own :)

I'll just take the easy way out and say that Super Mario All-Stars+Super Mario World for the SNES is the best Mario game ever. :D

I'd have to give the crown to SMB3, followed by SMW, then SMB2, then SMB1. Never really got into the other Mario games after that.

Love 'em all. But since I have to choose.

1. Mario All Stars
a. 3
b. 2
c. 1/Lost Levels
2. Mario World
3. Yoshi's Island
4. Mario 64
5. Mario Sunshine

I wonder if Nintendo realizes just how popular Yoshi's Island is with die-hards. Not to say that it would necessarily change anything..... but it might.

Personally, I think it is THE best designed and most fun platformer ever. Of course, I enjoyed SMB3 more, but that's considering my age and the relative time. Going back, YI holds up better than anything. It'll continue to age very, very well.

Super Mario Bros. 3 is definitely first. The game that really got me into gaming.

2. Mario 64
3. Super Mario World
4. Yoshi's Island
5. Super Mario Bros.
6. Super Mario Sunshine
7. Super Mario Bros. 2

SMB2 for most imaginative worlds and gameplay pure genius to convert DDP to the MB cast. Second goes to SMB3 between the koopa kids and the flying fortresses and power suits Miyamoto was at the top of his fuckin game. I don't care if his next game is about virtual crack pipe smoking and comes with an interactive glass dick he will always be idolized for SMB3 by me.

Mario 64 is my favorite game of the series, but Yoshi's Island is definetly the best platformer. The level design is on a different level from any other Mario games....or any other series, for that matter.

Super Mario Bros. 3

After that, things get hazy. Yoshi's Island is great, but isn't a traditional Mario platformer. Super Mario World is good, and so is Super Mario 64. Super Mario Bros. 2 is really unique.

How about Donkey Kong for the Game Boy? That was a -great- game... much better than Mario vs. Donkey Kong.
