Best rain levels....

Ahh, I loved this map. I could run around it with my silenced G36C for hours.

Another one for Gears 1. Everything looked so wet. I particulary liked the little streams of water that would bounce of your shoulders as you walked through them.

All of Heavy Rain. The rain is just so damn atmospheric in that game, I'd almost put it up there with the fog of Silent Hill. It was amazing with surround sound.

for some reason the parts of Zelda:OoT with the song of storms came to mind
probably a case of having poor short term memory though

I know. I just wanted to point it out because KKRT is speaking as if PGR4 doesn't have wet road surfaces, and even if it didn't, somehow it's not a problem in GT5?

EDIT - PGR4's weather is dynamic too. I recall one of the main race events where the road was dry and by the end of the race the street was wet and there were puddles everywhere.
I havent said thats not a problem in GT. And there were also reflections on Tuscany wet tarmac tracks.

And everything wrong about rain in GT is low res alpha, thats it, but simulation is pretty awesome. I also havent said that i like low res alpha, just think that PGR 4 is overrrated.

Strange that this screen from Tokyo has reflection, i search for different gameplays videos and couldnt find one.

In Stunt Race FX, I think Big Ravine, a storm came in and it would start raining. Then you'd see the water droplets on your windscreen. Shit was EPIC.

In the racing genre, for me nothing beats F1 2010 on the PC, driving behind other cars was an awesome experience.

Crysis 2 also looked amazing, only the Epic demo (Samaritan) looked better, but I guess that does not count ;)

Thank you.

There aren't a lot of things I truly feel bad for in the gaming industry, but Bizarre Creations closing down was number with a bullet - to this day the game's presentation and all-around package of visuals is second to none for me, and the way they killed it with the weather, especially rain is still jaw-dropping.

Nothing beats racing through a rainy day or night in PGR4.

I know what I'll be playing sometime later this week now that I've handed in my Master thesis - I still have a few races to finish off with this amazing game.

Secondly, I'm glad to see Gears 1 & 2 getting the props they definitely deserved with their rain - with other games it was just darker skies and raindrops, but when I saw the rain level for Gears 1 at E3, I was actually blown away and felt like it was truly a "next-gen" moment so to say with the surfaces, running water and thunder and lightning. Same with the Gears 2 level at the laboratory. Still impressive as I watch both levels on Youtube right now.

Jesus Christ people. You almost let this thread get to page 2 without mentioning:

Thank god. I started on page 7 hitting the back button and was getting concerned. I don't find modern rain that reaches photorealism that interesting.

For me, rain from the 8-bit days is always better, just because we knew the devs were doing something special with the hardware.

I can't believe I didn't remember (and no one else did) F1 2010 until page 6. That's easily a top 3 no matter how you look at it, it's incredible how the camera gets sprayed and you can't see anything when behind oher cars, the in car cameras with rain also look great. And the overall mood of a rainy day is done incredibly well.

PGR4 would still be a top 3 for me though.

The rain in minecraft, its surprisingly atmospheric for a game with such simple graphics.

He needs to make more transitions though, similar to RDR.

Sky turns grey for a few minutes, then we get a light rain, then it gets heavier, then stops, turns grey again and then blue.

Instead it's blue skies -> hard rain -> night.

Metal Gear Solid 2
Splashdown
Persona 3
Deadly Premonition
Legend of Zelda: LttP
Donkey Kong Country (1st level-ish)
Super Metroid
Project Gotham Racing 4

Metal Gear Solid 2 easily takes the cake as most impressive for me. Before that it was LoZ: LttP which had impressed the hell out of me.

I really liked it when they added in random weather effects to WoW. Nothing like rolling through one of the forest or jungle like zones, and seeing the storm rolling through.

PS: I immediately thought of like a fuck ton of Zelda games though that's been talked about to death already.

I thought the presentation was a bit rough, actually. In particular, the menu system and replay camera angles. I would have liked to have seen something smoother along the lines of Codemasters recent games for menus and improved replay angles. I wasn't impressed with the rain either. As I noted either, the game has amazing shaders for wet surfaces, but the rain droplets themselves aren't great. They use the typical jaggy toothpick rain.

Tallon Overworld from Metroid Prime.

After the introduction sequence, seeing the droplets of water run down Samus' visor is really incredible.

This. So darn amazing

The original Metroid Prime basically set standards for visor/HUD interaction on console gaming. I honestly can't think of a game that did what it did so damned effectively and effortlessly. Steam, fog, ice, rain, water wash, alien guts, etc; all were just remarkable.

It's been surpassed a long time ago, but when I used to play Morrowind, and it started raining, sometimes I would just hang out and watch as the downpour hit the nearby lakes or streams. At the time it was such a cool effect, and it made me feel like I was there. If not just a little bit. I love rain effects. They can really be effective in setting a mood if done correctly.
