Best sniper rifle?

To me Goldeneye defined the sniper rifle mode. Yeah, yeah, MDK had it first, but GE really made it popular (it was bound to happen eventually) - the way your aim got shaky as you zoomed in, and aided loads by what is still one of the best hit location engines.

Sniper mode in GE is still beating the pants off many today, but there are definitely some better ones now. I got to thinking this while playing RE4 - definitely one of the best. The zoom, the waiting patiently trying to breathe right, and the fear that if you miss a dozen villagers will come your way. Reload animation makes it feel more authentic too. Metal Gear Solid2 had a great sniper aswell.

Your favourites?

The suppressed rifle in GE was cool, back in the day. I also loved the original UT's sniper rifle. Then again, maybe I just liked hearing the announcer say, "Head Shot!" I also remember the .50 caliber rifle in Rogue Spear being loud as fuck on my speakers.

I always liked counterstrike's sniper rifle. But thats because I don't care at all about realism and enjoy being able to charge into an area and shoot two of my friends in the head before they even realize whats happening.

I really liked the look of the view through the scope in hitman 2, and movement felt realistic. There was also a nice kickback when you shot.

UT sniper rifle

There was none finer

Snake Eater has the best sniper stage by far.
I liked Second Sight's sniper too though it was a bit easy to pull off.

Resident Evil 4 sniper > all snipers ever. It had the perfect feeling. It wasn't too light or too heavy handling, the scope was awesome, perfect reaction time and on top of it all it had the best reload animation ever. Topic closed!

I love the zoom and resolution of the RE4 sniper rifle. It zooms so fast and the focus is sharp the whole time.

Both rifles in RE4 were cool. The bolt action rifle, while not as effective, was simply satisfying to fire.

the one in mgs3 was really satisfying, though i'm not sure exactly why. the sensitivity and balance just seemed right...i could easily pull off a sequence of rapid headshots. fully-upgraded semiauto rifle in re4 is fun too, though somehow more awkward. i also really liked using various rifles to headshoot brutes in halo 2.

edit: wait, what am i thinking: the arcade versions of silent scope win easily. god i loved those games. and i think the first cool sniper rifle was the one in golgo 13. that game is so crap and so brilliant at once.

The finger of God, aka the AWP from Counter-Strike.

Nothing gives the feeling of "one shot, one kill" than that rifle. Yeah, it's 'cheap'. Yeah, it's slow and heavy. Yeah, you can get shot in the leg and almost die.

But it's so satisfying.

laser rifle nappy mod starsiege tribes all i ever need to own all who set foot out of thier base in broadside.

I liked the AWP in Counter-Strike best (stopped when 1.6 came out, and the auto-snipers got the limelight). Just so fun to use.

The Scout in Counter-Strike. If you did well with that thing there was nothing people could say to you. Also, if you killed an AWPer with it or someone with one of the semi-auto snipes, well you could just take your pants right off.

TS3 has the best, I think. There's nothing more satisfying than landing a bullet in a Free Radical title. I love the sound it makes and I love the reaction of the enemy.

Sound-wise, AWP in CS. No question about it, sound like Zeus threw a thunderbolt up your ass.

Satisfaction wise, probably Scout in CS as well. Especially when killing an AWP whore :D

Blood 2 had an awesome sniper rifle.

Just a shame there were always zero players online to cap in the head with it.

Human sniper rifle in Halo is my favorite as well. The covenant is a bit more fun but the overheat feature can screw you if you miss a couple.
I really liked the sniper stages in Medal of Honor: Frontline though. One of the best snipers ever.

The sniper rifle in the original Unreal Tournament was INSANELY powerful. You could run around without zooming and rack up headshots if you had any clue at all, and it left no visual evidence of where the sniper was hiding if you were hidden at a distance.

Abuse of this uber-weapon was so great that they had to "nerf" it by removing it ENTIRELY from UT2k3.

So yeah, it gets my vote.

Absolutly LOVE the sniper in Return to Castle Wolfenstien. Nothing like sniping Alied soldiers storming the beach.

RE4 sniping is also my favouite. Best reload animation ever

The AWP from CS was indeed the pimp-daddy of all overpowered game stopping sniper rifles... until the second nerfing anyway. 2 decent snipers with AWP on your team = constant victory on half hte popular maps unless the other side had a good countersniper.

The sniper rifle I rocked the most was the scoped KAR in Call of Duty. I was just godly with that rifle online in 1.0, to the point where I'd be kicked from the 'snow' levels for cheating despite the kill-cam showing I wasn't. It just felt exactly right to me, but I admit it was pretty cheap that you got so much ammo for it (a week after release on a server filled with half noobs I'd get about 40 kills before my first death).

I'm decent with a scoped rifle in most games, and I had some excellent counter-sniper runs in DoD, but nothing like the success I had in CoD.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein had one of the greatest in term of fun (cause it was so abusable). It had night vision on the scope and it was silenced, IIRC. So powerful, it wasn't available in multi and I think there was only one clip of ammo for it in the whole game, meaning that you only got to shoot it like a dozen times in the whole game. :)

Perhaps my memory is skewed, but I seem to recall it also being able to zoom to quite a ridiculous distance. And don't forget... absolutely ZERO recoil!

And UT2K3 sucked. :(

Yup, those are both true...I believe it offered 8.0x zoom, and the no recoil + high rate of fire made it just ridiculous.

UT2k4 >>>>> UT2k3. They brought back the sniper rifle, by the way, but the rate of fire is down, the damage is less than the Lightning Gun, and they added a puff of smoke to a) obscure the target after firing and b) provide a visual clue to people who are looking for the sniper. All of that means that it's been nerfed to the point of being almost useless. :(

Yeah, I'm familiar with the 2K4 rifle. I do love UT2K4, but I haven't played much. Too many other games, and the fact that none of my friends had it for so long.... *sigh* ...I dislike constantly playing with strangers.
