Best solution for DREs?

I'm trying to play DQVIII here, but I get 19 DREs out of every 20 boots :(
My PS2 is almost 5 years old, and I don't really want one of the new PSTwos as I have a hard drive. Anyone have any advice about how I can get rid of the DREs on my machine?

Well, have you tried:

1)-putting in other games to see if they play?

2)-cleaning the laser lens with a good lens cleaner?

3)-cleaning the game disc itself (even if it appears clean)?

If all of the above fail, it's typically a bad laser assembly, i.e. time for another PS2 or trying to send the old one to repairs (and hope it doesn't cost you an arm and leg).

Every time I get a DRE its usually because of the disc, and boiling the disc almost always solves the problem. This happens to me alot with demo discs which are generally crap quality and very dirty even when they're "new." I recommend boiling the disc-- it's pretty simple. If that doesn't work there might be something wrong with your PS2, however I can't help you there.

Do other games work? Is it only DQ8 that you have trouble with?

Mine are never due to the disc, but the drive itself. When I bend down and blow into the drive NES-style, it usually solves the problem, but that's dangerous dut to potential condensation.

What is a good and effective lens cleaner? The last time I put a CD lens cleaner in a PC optical drive, it ate the brushes.

I used to have a lot of dre's, sometimes I would be resetting for ten minutes before the PS2 would read my disc. I found a solution though and now my PS2 loads every time.

The trick is to press the reset button in a special way (no not THAT way, you perverts). Instead of just clicking it on, you have to gently push it, for almost a second, just a bit shorter than when it would power-off. This way I never have dre's anymore

Sony repairs DRE's free of charge if you send it into them. I've done this before.

XBOX is a snap if lens cleaners don't work because you can use a pretty good range of regular PC CD/DVD drives and they're dirt cheap if you shop around.

Call sony

Just make sure you mention that you don't want a new pstwo
They typically send back a refurbished ps2, so it should not mater anyway

I would assume their japaneese divsion should offer similar customer service

This actually works for me. I'm shocked. I think there must be something weird about the bootup sequence though, as I never get DREs once the game has loaded, even if the machine is on for 10 hours or more. If I play a while and then hard reset though, DREs every time.

This cant be true can it? When I was looking for a new drive the xbox drives were $70-$90 with the Thomsons at $50 at least. I went ahead and got a thomson lense for $23.

I've wondered myself why it actually works, because just like you I never have dre's while playing and everything loads normally. Pushing the reset button a different way shouldn't do anything at all, yet...here is the proof. I'm just glad I stumbled upon this in one of my resetting marathons and that I could help you with your problem.
