Best video game myths?

In the 1994 Gamepro interview with Roger Sharpe he said "ermacs" is something he put in the game to automatically recover the system after a glitch and compared it to the hidden key room in Smash TV. He said nothing at all about it leading to a fight with a red ninja or any character at all. In fact he refered to it as "it" not "him" or anything implying it's a fight or appearance of a character. There's similar stuff in the other MK games but they just reset the game. Whatever "ermacs" is it was apparently related to the hardware because when they switched to the T-Unit board it was taken out.

Thats pretty much the whole explanation about the ermac rumour that nobody wants to hear and rather go with the myth.

Ermac meant Error Macro, probably an error event handler like describe above.

Someone must have crashed the game, the word Ermac appeared and people's reaction was "OMG SECRET CHARACTER!"

It might have produced an red scorpion like the Reptile bug produced a green clone, considering that was the most consistent part of the rumour.

I think Ermac is the greatest gaming myth ever, just becuase of the fact that 99% of gamers believe it even after being told the truth.

That there was a way to get out of the minus world in Super Mario Bros. That there were multipl minus worlds. That the minus world was an easter egg put there on purpose (it's a glitch).

I'm surprised no one mentioned the "play as past Bonds in GE007." I remember that causing quite a stir back in the day.

Anyway, I remember some minor rumors in games, like being able to unfreeze Zora's Domain in OoT, or Goldeen actually (rarely) one-hit-killing in SSB Melee.

But that DAMN ice key....

Can you get the guy with the gun in Bushido Blade 1? Supposedly, but to do so you need to kill 100 ninjas in "Chambara Mode" without taking a hit, which I've never seen happen.

Sheng Long.
Sad but true: I was maybe 12 when that EGM came out, I actually got good enough to beat SFII using Ryu without taking a hit! I was so confused at not getting to fight Sheng Long, then crushed when the next month's issue said "April Fool's."

Oh well, I can still whup anyone's ass with Ryu, any dayof the week.

OH I never that ermac stuff came from an interview. What I first saw of it was a pair of glared pictures in EGM. The story from the player who sent them in was. I think...

He was playing as johnny cage Vs. johnny cage(cpu) in the level with the statues (not sure which), and there was a glitch where the game let him accidentally do a fatality mid level with the cpu at half health, but the cpu character didnt die. Then the red ninja showed up and beat the shit out of him. The picture i saw were taken with a flash so it was hard to see, but it was a redish ninja holding johnny's head after a fatality and there was some text I could not read. The arcade cabinet then went shithouse after that supposedly and had to be rebooted.

Now it might have been a total joke by EGM, BUT it was in there, and it wasn't just a screen cape, but a picture of the whole cabinet monitor from a few feet back.
THATS what i thought ermac was, some one-time, insane, never-happening-again mistake that people swore could be reproduced when it couldn't.

When ermac finally appearded in later mk games, my freind and I just thought that since they could never convince anyone it was a crazy glitch, they just finally put him in.
