Best way to play DS era pokemon games (Omega Ruby, HeartGold, etc)

So my kid has gotten very interested in the DS/3DS era pokemon games like Omega Ruby and Heart Gold. I see the older GBA ones are on Switch Online but this specific era seems missing on that service, undoubtedly because of the two screens. So is the only real recourse to get a refurb DS lite, 2DS XL, or 3DS and buy each game? My memory of these handhelds is pretty vague and I was never into pokemon. A 3DS game isn't playable on a 2DS but DS titles are on a 3DS, correct? I see there are DS cartridges filled with hacked roms, do these work? Any easy emulation system out there or impending offical relaunch of a new retroDS for xmas?

3DS will play the DS games but there will be borders due to screen size.

In terms of quality the most expensive games are the best. Diamond and Pearl is numerous and the cheapest but still expensive. Diamond and Pearl are sloooooow. Black/White and Black2/White2 are fast but Black/White has ALL NEW Pokemon only until you beat the game so if your kid wants Gengar, Charizard, Snorlax its not possible.

If the intention is to play DS games ONLY, the best bet imo is to go with a DSi XL. Screen is bigger and IPS. Obviously if the intention is to move into 3ds games as well, get a 3ds/2ds model. A 3ds game is a 2ds game and a 2ds game is a 3ds game. No difference except the lack of the 3d effect. All 3DS/2DS models can play DS games.

Also all models of 3ds/2ds and ds are easily hacked if you want to go that route. Not gonna elaborate further on that.
