Bethesda has added Denuvo to Ghostwire: Tokyo


A few hours ago, Tango Gameworks released the Spider’s Thread Free Update for Ghostwire: Tokyo. And, according to some changes to the game’s executable file, users assumed that Bethesda has added Denuvo to the game. And yes, we can now confirm that the game indeed uses the Denuvo anti-tamper tech.
In order to find out whether the game uses Denuvo, we simply used MSConfig in order to change the number of CPU cores our AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D uses.
Like with all Denuvo games, after five CPU changes, you’ll get the following authentication error message. So yes, the game now uses Denuvo, there is no doubt about that.

Ghostwire: Tokyo launched a year ago, so it feels a bit weird adding Denuvo to such an old game. My guess is that Tango Gameworks may be working on an expansion, which kind of explains why Bethesda added Denuvo to it.

I can see the twisted paranoid logic to add to games on launch, but now?

people who pirated the game wont be able to play the expansion and people who did buy the game will be rewarded with all kind of performance problems. But since it has the Bethesda name, noone will notice its Denuvo but think its just bethesada jank. its a win/win for them.

We can all rest assured that once Microsoft's endgame is in place and all games are only available via cloud, Denuvo will be a thing of the past :messenger_beaming:

they also completed fucked up the Xbox version, which is legit broken... so good job all around -_-

The most egregious issue plaguing Ghostwire: Tokyo, however, is the game's performance. On Xbox Series X, the game's frame rate is all over the place. Sometimes you'll turn a corner and see performance inexplicably dip from sixty frames down to 30 or lower, although it seems to be worse in certain areas and due to certain effects (like the game's grainy rain effects). And do forget "quality mode," since it introduces a bewildering slow-motion input delay that makes the game thoroughly unplayable. It also oddly hitches as you're moving around the city ever so slightly, creating an uncanny judder that is irritating once you've noticed it. The mission-oriented Spider's Thread expansion doesn't suffer from the same performance issues and judder I've noticed, which suggests to me that the issues stem from streaming the game's open world. Alas, hopefully, it's not unfixable.

I can understand having it for the start but not well after release. Bizarre. Especially when Xbox Games Studios now don't have to worry about sales targets.

Just another reminder every corporation is "greedy"* by its nature and wants to squeeze out every penny possible in every way they can, no matter what cute sweet fairytales they tell you in their PR speech.

No such thing as they "now don't have to worry about sales targets". They absolutely do.

*what's often called greed is just business

Did someone at the company looked at Ghostwire Tokyo (no Denuvo) bomb because its a shittier version of Far Cry and Hifi-Rush (denuvo) succeed because its a good game and used it as an excuse that has somehow resulted in this stupid move?

They should accept refund from anyone who has bought it prior to this.

Well there was a claim from Sony that MS might (inadvertently or not) produce inferior CoD for PS platforms if they acquire ABK.

Maybe we got it all wrong - MS will self-sabotage the GP version to force people to buy a copy on PS and pump their revenues.

In terms of piracy, MS may hope that rather than crack their games, people will just do the cheapo GP $1 sign up which in turn pumps their sub numbers and maybe some forget to cancel and keep paying at full price for a month.

What's the hard facts and science surrounding Denuvo in 2023, how much does it affect the user experience?
 
someone, now unemployed, might have forgotten it in the first place and instead of just forgeting about it, argued about adding or not adding it after launch for a while and came to the conclusion that they actually add it a bit later than planned?

yeah it's really bad. it stutters for absolutely no reason, the 2 VRR graphics modes literally do not support VRR, and the controls on controller are a disaster.

I turned on the game-bar on my TV, which shows the current refresh rate of the tv, and in performance mode while literally standing still and looking up to the sky, my TV's refresh counter had an epileptic seizure!
120hz > 48hz > 67hz > 120hz > 72hz > 48hz > 120hz > and so on and so forth... it just jumps up and down like the pulse of someone having a heart attack...

then when using the HFR Quality or HFR Performance modes the TV is fully locked to 120hz, while the game has constant screen tearing due to not having any vsync on and running below refresh...
these 2 modes ARE SPECIFICALLY IN THE GAME TO BE USED IN COMBINATION WITH VRR as I said... and they DO NOT support VRR...

Meanwhile the 2 modes that are meant for people without VRR screens, the "HFR Quality (Vsync)" and "HFR Performance (Vsync)" do support VRR... it's comical really.

Tango Softworks really just shat this version out on the street, completely unfinished, with a 32% deadzone even when set to the lowest deadzone setting, and that on the debut on its new owner's console...
this is crazy to me...

I don’t game on PC, but understand this is anti piracy software. Is there an equivalent they could use? Or should there be no anti piracy software at all?
