Betrayer announced — hands on with new FPS from the creators of F.E.A.R. and No One..

Sigh... black and white...

ARTTTTTTTTTTT

I wouldn't be even half as interested if it wasn't from some of the people behind F.E.A.R. a.k.a. FPS-with-yet-to-be-surpassed-gunplay.

They needed to go further with the art style. It feels like someone put a lame filter on Skyrim. There's so much more they could do with effects and animation.

Looks like a botched SweetFX filter was used to get that color scheme

I don't like the visual style at all.. And the gameplay looked bog standard.

Looks cool. I'm a little concerned the art might be a bit eye-strain-y over time, but I dig the overall vibe.

needs more color imo, sorry.
It needs more grey IMO. I get what they are going for, but the implementation is really hard on the eyes when watching the trailer. It feels like a filter slapped on top of a game that was already being rendered in full color. Objects tend to disappear into the environment, and seems to make distinguishing objects rather difficult. As it is I couldn't imagine playing the game.

Some guys from Monolith (which made some of my favorite FPS, the ones mentioned in the thread title) developing a new FPS? Why haven't I sent my money to them yet?

The art style reminds me in a way of the Wii game MadWorld, which I wasn't a fan of. But that doesn't matter when Monolith (or at least some ex-employees) is behind it.

I did a complete 180 on this game in about 5 seconds.

Pre-click the thread: That's great, but there's no way some clowns that worked on FEAR are going to be able to make anything worthwhile in today's triple A environment.

Post-click: Welp, amazing looking art, intriguing premise, PC specific control scheme, randomized enemies (!!!), sounds amazing. Pre-purchasing ASAP.

My first impression too. The gunplay didn't look brilliant to me, didn't sound like it either - but people say F.E.A.R. had great mechanics and the game sounds interesting so I'm curious.

Fear was one and still hold ups as best hit reaction, feedback and gun play in a FPS. Encounters were fast, brutal and visceral before the marketing put it everywhere. IA was ruthless. No regenerating life. You went him, shit was going down, grenades were shockwaving the entire room, blasting particles, fucking lights ups, then you unload your shotgun cutting dude in half in a blaze of fire and fury. IA was jumping everywhere, hiding, surrounding. It was amazing.

This project doesn't sound original, enough to be troubling at first sight with it's weird art direction. But if gunplay is anything as fast and brutal as FEAR (reminding us the good old days of fast fps) then let's keep it in our sight

It'd probably be a lot easier on the eyes if it was more like MadWorld.

omg omg these people making a new game just when we were talking about NOLF in a revival thread

Gives me A Field In England vibes

And it looks so good!

I loved NOLF because it was funny and lighthearted, and was hugely disappointed that the team behind it turned their backs and spent the following decade on the utterly boring and humourless FEAR series. This isn't changing my mind. It at least looks more creative than FEAR, but looks just as tiringly serious.

It needs more shades of grey. I'm convined this game would burn my corneas out after like 5 minutes of playing it and I already don't have the best eyesight.

Did you play Gotham City Impostors? Last game Monolith did. Reminded me of their NOLF roots.

This looks intriguing, but I agree with the posters saying that it looks like they threw a filter over something that was already rendering in color.

If your game is going to be high-contrast black & white, then design your game for high-contrast black & white. It's hard to tell what's going on in some of those shots.

ANOTHER FPS? sigh...
I'm going to say something similar in every thread about a new platformer, RPG, puzzle game, indie game with 16 bit graphics and so on. I'm sure it will go well because fans of those genres will agree, right? I mean, do we really need another platformer, RPG, puzzle game, indie game with 16 bit graphics and so on?

I could not be more worried by how high contrast the black and white looks, but I cannot pass up a shooter by people from Monolith. Those guys get good gunplay.

Always the one to notice details.......I'm wondering something.

That appears to be a flint/match/wheel-lock rifle. However, when the character fires the lock doesn't appear to rotate.

If it is a "lock" based rifle the hammer should fall, with a bit of a delay between contact and firing...I don't see it actually moving, but it could just be happening really fast. :(

I hope they fix that...or it would drive me nuts.

This is certainly the most interesting game I've seen in a while.

I like the concept of the art direction, but I think how it's rendered in game makes it appear more gaudy than it should be.

Okay, it definitely looks interesting but I can see how this could possibly be extremely eye-straining. My eyes almost hurt from looking at the pictures for more than a few seconds.

I feel as though in order for this to work they need to get rid of the noise of their textures.
