Biggest downgrades from initial reveal?

I see Madden 06 mentioned a lot in this regard, but you can tell that footage is clearly FMV. Did they specifically state it was in-game, or in-engine at the time?

Target video and actually, they said the final game would look even better. They did the same thing with the PS4/Xbox One Madden trailer.

The original pitch/trailer for Bioshock 1 sounded MUCH more ambitious than the actual game ended up being. Lots of focus on AI ("hundreds of ways to interact with them!"), interactivity of environments, etc.

I watched that video you posted and I can honestly say the final version pretty much wrapped up all those ideas together at the expense of sacrificing AI depth and water effects. It's not that much of a deal actually; I'm currently replaying Bioshock 1 and it's a great FPS with a lot of filler stuff put in between goals just to make it feel like quite a long adventure.

In reality, the game just drags too much. It could have been 3 hours shorter.
 
Wow neogaf sure was full of hype and energy back then.. Much more positive attitude. What happened? Over modded to blandness or what? considering half the people there are banned..

Gaf was such a Community back then, there were massive wars but in the end we were all in it together.

I haven't gotten around to playing the PC version much yet, only had the Xbox one so maybe that's why. The screenshots I remember were looked very high res and the game was supposed to have destructible environments, multiplayer and some pretty water effects.
I mean, this is the same company that made Lightning's boobs bigger for Lightning Returns just because of the outfit customization. Is it bad that the main reason that bugged me was because of canon? I don't want to play the tail end of the trilogy and have the main character have bigger boobs just because.
I don't think this was ever true.

Lightning Returns is a big graphical downgrade though lol
 
I honestly wasn't sure of a downgrade I even cared about.

Then someone mentioned Kinect... Oh god. Kinect was something I cared about for a while for being interesting tech, and they obviously hyped it like it would destroy controllers and buttons. Then I went to the US later that year and saw advertising for it and the extremely crazy stuff they expected it to be able to do. By then I already knew all of that was impossible, but everyone still believed it was real!

Nothing compares to the horrible disappointment that was E3 2010.

Having Cirque Du Soleil before the demo should have been a good clue of what was about to happen. The thing still sold like hotcakes thanks to the insane marketing, but never in its lifetime beat the already low expectations I had for it at launch.

Although Kinect 2 certainly has been something else, properly integrated to the X1.

Kind of a rant, but yeah, Kinect.

Wasn't Bioshock Infinite a pretty big downgrade? Maybe not from a graphics standpoint but more in the gameplay? I didn't really watch much of it before it was released and bought the game and ended up liking it quite a bit but that seemed to be a huge complaint.

In size and gameplay scope, yeah. The skyline stuff got hacked down, the NPCs were gimped intelligence-wise, and Elizabeth became a much more passive player in the game rather than contributing to the fight.
 
We won't hit what's going on in the KZ2 CGI trailer for another 2 generations. People are definitely getting confused and mistakenly equating an aesthetic more to their liking with graphical prowess.

The CGI trailer's animations and their non-gamey seamlessness alone put it tiers above what we've got and what we will get this generation.
 
Red Steel, the thread? I know Far Cry 3 got a great deal of hate for the lack of lush jungle environments that were initially shown.

Yep. I remember RS looking pretty awesome in the E3 2006 reveal and the final game looked like shit. (And played like it too.)
 
This thread makes me want a 1080p 60 fps MGS4.

Ughh... Never again. I played through that game I think twice and hated it both times. First time I beat it, I thought I maybe missed something in one of the hour+ long cutscenes, so I decided to slog through it again as I loved the series and thought I should be sure. Nope, still hot garbage juice. Even at 60fps, I'd never play that again. GZ is coming in 2 weeks, let's hope Kojima put his best foot forward and we'll see something incredible.


Back on topic. It seems that Ubisoft commonly does these types of things. I noticed immediately the difference in Far Cry 3. It still looked great on PC, but it wasn't as good as it was with the initial reveal.

This one was pretty bad because I remember up until release it still wasnt clear if the platformer elements were cut from the game or not.

That original trailer was total bollocks.

Pretty good comparison. Not even in cutscenes does the game hold up, much less during actual gameplay. Thankfully BB in GZ and TPP gameplay moves fairly close to cutscenes quality.
 
I believe skyward sword took a very very slight downgrade from its initial reveal and demo at E3, nintendo turned down the colors just a bit, but I think link took on lesser polys which is funny since link, zelda, etc. have a ton of polys on them. Like 360 level
 
That comparison is biased IMO, but whatever. The polygon count, the smoke, the destruction, the animations, list goes on and on and on, are 10 times better in the CG trailer and the CG trailer has a lot of parts that look better than shadow fall.

I think visually Shadow Fall looks better than the 2005 CG, but technically CG has a lot of headway. Somebody should do a comparison between those two.

Yeah i remember that. MGS4 was originally supposed to be 60fps like that trailer but ended up looking inferior because sony downgraded the ps3 specs after that demo was produced. It was actually real-time too.
 
I never got the hate for MGS4's graphics, I thought they looked fantastic at the time, and still look pretty decent. Sure, it's got some stiff animations, but I think it was the first game to seamlessly go from cutscene to gameplay, and that was fucking AWESOME

Someone correct me if im wrong, but I don't remember anybody officially claiming the Motorstorm or the Killzone 2 videos were actual, in-game demos.

Publishers kind of bank on customers falling for target renders, so they kind of deserve to catch some flak for it.
 
I've always thought those changes were weird since Uncharted's cutscenes are all pre-rendered video.

are some of these games what they where trying to get in terms of visuals but by the end they have to cut back to get the games performance to balance out? some i see like they where completely bs and just gave us a pre rendered video.
 
Can we all stop commenting on the Dark Souls 2 shots, considering both the before and after are compressed and ugly to hell, and the first "after" shot is just complete garbage, you can't see anything.

The game looks pretty close to the original trailers in current gameplay videos/streams, and as was with the last game, the PC version will most likely look amazing once bumped up.
