Biggest Problems with PSP and DS

Load times have never bothered me on consoles. They're usually pretty quick compared to some games on PC that take 3-4 minutes to load *cough*Stronghold2*cough*

Don't have a DS so biggest problem:

PSP.

* fucked up media utilisation storage issue. Can't burn own UMDs means I absolutely think that the gorgeous screen + mp3 + media capability is absolutely compromised. Once this is solved, the PSP is the PERFECT handheld media device.

Buying $100 1gig sticks is a big F U from sony.

* stupid/pointless analog nub.

* uncovered UMD disc

Is it possible to turn of the PSP when you're playing music via remote through the use of the remote? Or turn of the screen? Is not, add that to my list of quibbles.

SO FAR I HAVE NO ISSUES WITH LOAD TIMES. GO FIGURE

Load times? Get with the program. Just like the PSX was, this is the future. Either accept it, or sell your PSP's (and probabaly Gameboy2's, cause there's a good chance it'll have longer load times with a portable disc drive)
Buy a GC and find out what disc games without load times are like. Even on the PS2 and Xbox, there are a few games without load times. Most of the load time issues on the PSP are because streaming is not cool for battery life. And unlike his royal highness Tabris, some of us actually play handhelds while we commute. Loading times suck when you're not sitting at home.

In terms of gaming, GBASP trounces on both still. Luckily PSP has a whole lot more than gaming going for it.
Not if you leave it in sleep mode.

I take the commute every day, 20 minutes each way. If I'm not watching movies, I'm playing MGA on my PSP. I just think complaining about load times on the first portable disc drive system is just weak.

I was talking about the systems themselves being trounced by GBASP still in terms of actual gaming.

I mean really, is it that big of a deal to turn your PSP on (if it's not on sleep mode already), look up and around at your surroundings for 30 seconds before looking back down to play some video games?

The horrible analog Nub is the only draw back to the PSP I can see. I would by another PSP if they had a model with a real analog stick. The analog nub is the worst control interface I have used since the disc pad of the intelevision. Fuck the analog nub is shit.

It doesn't matter if it's a not big deal for you. If someone else says it's a big deal for them, then it is. It doesn't matter if they're in the majority or minority, if someone is complaining about the loading times on the PSP, then it's a problem.

The reason why I don't like the loading times on it is because I'm a very impatient person. If I want to sit down somewhere away from home and play a game, I want to play it now. Periods of 30 seconds should be reserved for annoying commercials, not annoying load times.

I don't care if you can put up with the load times or not, but the fact of the matter is that all games, console or handheld, are much better off with minimal or no loading times. Play Resident Evil 4 before saying that it's impossible to create a masterpiece without load times.

If the player has already seen all the company splash screens once, why not flag that on the save file and skip them on next boot? Why not have the game remember and boot up to the last game mode you played, sleep mode or not?

This is impossible. Because of legal reasons, every time the game boots up, the legal and company splash screens must be displayed, but at least they're skippable. It's one of Sony's development requirements (and they're also requirements on the Xbox and Nintendo systems too). If a game doesn't display them every time you turn on the system, your game doesn't get licensed.

That's one of the smaller hidden beauties of the DS. Two screens means you get the legal stuff over twice as fast. Hell, the title screen and main menu can be displayed at the same time, too, meaning someone can start playing a DS game in the time it takes to load something on the PSP.

What I don't like about the DS is that compared to the PSP, it looks like a piece of shit. It looked sleek and stylish until the PSP was released, and now it looks like a toy. Also, while the speakers are very good, a lot of games don't use all the audio juice they could. Games like Meteos and Puyo Pop Fever are as loud as console games played on a TV, but a game like (Jam With the) Band Bros. is barely audible sometimes. I want my DS games to be LOUD.

I also hate the fact that developers are forcing touch screen control onto their games. Puyo has a touch screen control option, but it's pointless. There's no one who can control the falling blobs better on the touch screen than the D-Pad and buttons, so what's the point? On a related matter, I don't have a problem with developers just using a second screen for information instead of something else. It frees up the gameplay screen of clutter that would normally be there in a similar GBA game. (Just don't charge me $10 more for the privledge.)

this thread makes me cry...

i can't believe people are actually defending long loadtimes...

sad

I think its okay for what we get (PS2 visuals; more or less). I don't have issues with the load times on the PSP games I have

I know very well that I'm not representing everyone, but this is my commute: 5 min. walk -> 5 min. train journey -> 10 min. walk. Ideally, I would like to listen to music while I'm walking and play a game on the train. The problem is that I can't make use of sleep mode in this case, and the 40 secs.+ of loading really cuts into the game time. So generally, I've left my PSP on sleep mode and switched headphones to my iPod for the walk ;)

Eh, I'm not sure what you really think you're missing here. Video from memory stick doesn't max out the full PSP screen resolution not because Memory Sticks are physically incapable of playing back full 480x272 resolution videos but because Sony deliberately limited MS video playback resolution for some reason, most likely not to compete with quality of pre-recorded UMD movie releases. So even if they ever did release a UMD burner, I wouldn't be surprised if the stuck it with the same limitations of MS Duo. Beyond that, you'd have to pay for the UMD burner which I would expect to be int $100-200 range to start, being optimistic. By the time such a device arrived, 1 gig MS Duos would probably have decreased in price to the point that you could almost get a couple of them for the same price as a UMD burner. MS Duos are also rewritable...no guarantee that'd be the case with UMD or that an RW UMD would be readable by your stock PSP.

Most people have no idea how crowded and busy Tokyo/Japan can be. You can be fiddln' around with trying to turn off-on your shit in the middle of a train station with 1,000s of people. Not a problem in the US when trains/buses take forever to show up...

Load times suck. There is no way around that fact. I refused to buy a PS1 for that reason alone (I know im in the minority).

If you set the DS to auto-boot games it is even that much faster. I can start playing a game of Touch Yoshi in about 3 seconds tops, from off to on. (wish I didnt have to read that health waring, thanks soccer mom bitches and lawyers)

Portable games are not designed or meant to be played at home, even though alot of us do. I prefer to try to play my backlog of portable games on trips, than using up potential console time in my room. Loading times just make it that much more of a pain in the ass to do so...

I still dont understand the "just put in sleep mode" damage control BS. What the fuck is the point of having a portable game you have to plan out and pamper it like some sorta chia-pet?

Being able to throw that shit in your pocket on the way out the door without worrying about scratching the screen, the battery life giving out on you, or if you have time sneak in a game before the next stop, would be ideal for a handheld. Am I wrong??

"full 480x272 resolution videos but because Sony deliberately limited MS video playback resolution for some reason"

i'm going to guess this is circumventable some how....

Ah! Something we can all have in common in this minefield-of-a-thread. Nostalgia anyone?
