Biggest Problems with PSP and DS

worst part of the psp - people justifying 40 seconds as acceptable load times. yet ESPN Extreme Games for PS had like 25 second load times and people said it was the end of the world.. so as time advances longer load times are acceptable? if you fags are saying that 2 minutes load times is ok in 5 years because the games look like Toy Story, I'm gonna kick you in the nuts

DS - lack of games. it has some great games, but by this point in the GBA's life it had plenty more great games.. geto to it developers! (yes, psp also has a lack of games, but the load times on psp are worse than its lack of games).

Thanks Olimario!

Because if theres one thing this place really needed it was another PSP/DS debating/trolling/bitching thread.

This thread would be fine if people would stop trying to refute the problems people have with each system. This was supposed to be a thread where we simply bitch about our problems with the handhelds... nothing more.

Read the words. Its in English.

Disable delusion filters.
Hardly.

load times on a handheld is a turn off... not saying that ir is bad enough not to own a PSP.. but a drawback, I mean after the Gameboy with almost no load times it is something that people have gotten used to...

Same could be said of consoles when it moved from cart to CD, but now I don't even think about load times at all period.

The biggest problem I have with the PSP..is it forced me to agree with Oli.. :lol

It's not so bad on my side of the fence, Blackace.
It's actually quite... grassy.

this is BS. I don't care about load times when it is under 10 seconds. but I still think that they are annoying. The only time I don't even think they are annoying is when they are just a second or two of loading... but longer than that and I get a smile everytime I load up a GBA game. and longer than 10 second load times COULD turn me off from a game, other factors withstanding.

I agree... but sometimes a game like stuntman comes along and takes you back to the C64 tape drive days....

And we all know handhelds and consoles are different beast..

You've been playing baby games this entire thread trying to refute completely legitimate concerns. In broken english too, I might add.

No you! Hurr-hurr.

Broken english? Hurr-hurr.

No wonder no one bothers to discuss anything with you anymore.

The problem with both the psp and ds is that theyre both trying too hard, nintendo and sony should both agree that third party support for the gizmondo is the future.

Lets put it this way. While youre entertained by godawful fucking zookeeper we are not. Longer loading? Probably, but the games are just THAT much better than the pathetic DS library that only serves to be embarassing for its owner.

If the great PSP library requires I wait an additional batch of seconds, bring those seconds fucking ON.

HSG HSG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cons for both-

PSP:
No/not many multi-player from 1 cart games

Expensive

Fragile

Not a "toss in the back pocket and forget about it" portable

Your average "joe" needs a CS degree (and 100$ mem card) to use 1/2 the media functions to their full potential

DS:
Bad image as kiddy (all games/consoles/handhelds are kiddy IMO)

US releases are a joke, its still 2004...

no gamecube connectivity

no gameboy multi-player

ridge racer screens in a PSP vs. DS thread will be harder to live down than the 3 Japanese dudes laughing at the Jpn. Xbox release pic.

No kidding? That's a damn shame as I was thinking of buying a DS mainly for GBA purposes. So, it's not at all possible for 2-Player support on any GBA games on the DS?

PSP: has poor ergonomics. My hands ache badly after playing it.
Requires constant cleaning.

My only complaint about the DS is that it doesn't stretch GBA games to full screen.

I sold both handheld already but I'm thinking of buying a DS at the end of the year when better games are out.

I agree with MrAngryFace. You can talk about load times until you're blue in the face but when the game sucks ass, its worth waiting for a few more seconds.

Loading times used to irritate the hell out of me years ago but don't bother me now. Usually, I put on headphones and position myself for some fun handheld gaming.

Some problems with PSP I have

- Fingerprints. I remember the first week or so I'd wipe them off vigorously like a meth head on bathroom tile. I gave up because it was too annoying. It was even worse for DW because of the square button used for fighting. Now I look at the PSP. Looks great but all the fingerprints :( Its like an attractive woman who keeps packing on the pounds.

- Getting assfucked on Sleep mode. This may be a software issue (DW was a huge offender, sometimes it was like this for Darkstalkers) where you put the PSP in sleep mode. Then you turn it on and the game FUCKING LOCKS UP. I think it happened once to Lumines. Sometimes it became such an ordeal that for DW, I'd always just turn it off. It was a pain in the ass.

- April. Pink sucks.

- Speakers are shitty. Headphones are almost a requirement to play PSP. With headphones, the audio is amazing but without them, its like The Simpsons post 1998 - Ok but will never be the same.

I never had a beef when I owned the DS for hardware. I think its a fine machine but there was little worth playing on it.

you are the second complaint I have heard this from. I have no problems with it, just weird that some people are having a really hard time with it.

My biggest problems with the PSP and DS, respectively, are krypt0nian and Olimario. Drinky and MAF are at least funny.

Oh, and the lack of good games (particularly original ones) on either.

Is it physically possible to make the DS smaller? I just don't see how it can be much smaller without making it more uncomfortable to use, although it can always lose some weight. Same with PSP, they can't really make it smaller or clamshell unless you fold the screen.

I did nothing here but defend a position from an attack that shouldn't have come. I just wanted to hear what problems people had with the systems.

The DS has few real worthwhile games and the Playstation Port-Able's library is about as original as the first dual shock.

Game Boy Clunky for life

my biggest complaint about the PSP is the size. it's not too comfortable when i put it in my pocket (especially with the Logitech case). playing it in sunlight sucks too, with the glare and fingerprints.

load times aren't an issue for me. i use sleep mode like any other sane PSP user, and i don't try multitask between listening to mp3s and playing games in a short time period. stick with one thing and make up your mind. anyway, on my 12 minute commute in the train, i can finish up to 3-4 levels of twisted metal, with load times and all, and assuming i have sleep mode set up at the twisted metal menu. that's fine with me.

and recharge time for the psp is close to 2 hours, not 3 hours. i usually just recharge it when i get home and not playing with it. no need to completely discharge the battery before recharging (this is actually bad in the long run I think, if you only recharge when its low on power)

Load times have started to get really annoying for me on the PSP. It's never a problem when I'm at home, but when I'm actually trying to use it as a portable it renders itself useless if I want to switch games.

I dropped off my wife in front of the store so she could go in real quick and get stuff to make dessert for this party we were going to. So I park the car and I figure I have a few minutes to kill, so why not get some NBA Street in. I get the PSP out, swap out Wipeout, swap the disc in.

White boot screen. Doo dee doo daa daa... DAHN <PSP>! Disc grinding noises. More grinding noises. EA SPORTS... BIG! More grinding noises. Loading logo. Grinding. Shitty EA Trax music starts playing indicating that we're at the main menu and it's been like a minute already.

Okay, time to continue my Own the Street mode. More loading and grinding. Load game from mem card? Yes. Pick court to challenge. Pick subgame at court. More loading....

Just as I get to the player select screen and I'm about to pick Rock, I get a knock on the window and there the wife is with the strawberries and ice cream.

So I put it in sleep mode. Good times.

yeah ok, that kind of loading needs to be eliminated in future PSP games. wipeout pure does that crap too by forcing you to press X like 10 times to get to the title screen. hopefully developers will realize that bullshit logo videos and intros and all that crap need to be thrown out in new PSP games, or at least give the player the option to turn them off in the options menu. like how ridge racer allows you to turn off the mini game on bootup.

You are playing the wrong games, looking for good load times form EA games? :lol

Lumines, RR, HSG, Twister Metal all have decent load times.

I already have wrist problems from typing so my hands are real sensitive to bad ergonomics. I have the same problem with GBA SP.

DS works fine though especially since there's little pressure when your using the stylus.

I think the biggest problems with the PSP and DS are the wars they incite inside of our peaceful gaming haven at gaf. :(

PSP Problems:

not necessarily fragile, but everytime i'm about to set it down, i have to think carefully about the skematics of how im going to put it down.

fingerprints

not too many original game series

expensive

DS problems:

no.fucking.games.after.7.months

2nd screen is a joke; no one but nintendo is putting it to good use

...games look like shit

The problem with the DS and the PSP are fanboys. The constant having to defend your system or come up with reasons to hate (and really, hate is strong for an inanimate object) the other system. Hey get both and enjoy both for what they are and what they can do or if you can't afford both get the one that appeals most to you and just shut up about the other one and enjoy what you got. Should be more discussions on the games you play not the system.

Load times? SLEEP MODE, dorks. Load the game before you leave, switch it into sleep mode. It isn't rocket science. I have a couple holes of HSG ready to go at the drop of a hat.

*bzzzt* wrong, GAF has never been peaceful. For every Opa that gets permabanned, there's 3 that take his place...it's always been like that.

PSP:
-takes like 5 seconds of holding the power button to turn off
-disc reading sound is incredibly loud... obviously not when you have the sound up, but when you want to play quietly in class, you can't
-one side feels nice and durable, other side has to be treated like an egg.
-no way (that I know of) to go to the home screen without letting the game partially boot... without opening the disc drive.

DS:
-Speaker popping sound as mentioned before
-having to shut down after changing anything as mentioned before
-cheap ass paint

DS and PSP aren't very portable to me. They're pretty slow to load up and don't fit in my pocket.
GameBoyAdvanceSP.jpg

Last true portable
-durable
-no real loading time
-compact as hell
-so many games!

That's soo true, my DS looks like crap right now. Cause the paint smears off and stuff.

Sleep Mode is awesome, until you actually want to switch games. I like to keep things switched up; I didn't buy 11 PSP games to just keep one of them stuck in the UMD drive.

A lot of this can be fixed on the software side. If the player has already seen all the company splash screens once, why not flag that on the save file and skip them on next boot? Why not have the game remember and boot up to the last game mode you played, sleep mode or not?

All this stuff is very doable and would save several minutes of loading and menu jockying per boot.

The PSP feels and looks very fancy but also very delicate. It's a really nice bit of kit, but fuck if I don't get nervous playing my flatmates one and then putting it down afterwards.
I mean, it's great looking, but I don't get the feeling its got great build quality. I could just be wrong though time will tell on that one.

I've only played lumines and found the load times slightly irritating but what really pisses me off about the game is the character select is a bitch. I dunno, bad interface design it feels like it takes a week to change to my character. Thats a pretty minor gripe and other than that it's an amazing game. Oh and fuck the price of the thing if you want to use its other features (booooo memory sticks) it's not getting my money just due to its absolutely massive price (NZ and AU getting raped bad on this thing if it ever releases)

DS, I love my DS and have had a ton of fun with it, but I'm starting to hanker for something with a bit more meat to a game. I'm not to worried as there are a shitload of good games coming, but they are taking AGES.

in short
PSP: To delicate, loading....... loading....... loading.......
DS: Only games I own are short burst games only. have to use GBA function for something with more content (Awars)

Jawsome. I get to worry about the battery running out and make sure I load my game before I take my PSP anywhere!

I hate load times, the DS has been superb with them so far. Games like Meteos and Electroplankton don't even have any load times, you're at the title screen as soon as the NDS logo dissappears. :D

OMG, you are all such babies.

Load times? Get with the program. Just like the PSX was, this is the future. Either accept it, or sell your PSP's (and probabaly Gameboy2's, cause there's a good chance it'll have longer load times with a portable disc drive)

Anyways, my problem with the DS is bad games and gimmicky hardware.

My problem with the PSP is it has no good games coming out for it anymore. (at least not for a while)

In terms of gaming, GBASP trounces on both still. Luckily PSP has a whole lot more than gaming going for it.

It's true, the DS has some great games coming out soon. Castlevania, FF3j Remake, etc. But honestly, all of those games could have and should have been released on GBASP instead.
