Black main characters in games?

It's about time we had one of these again.

A lot of black people in sports games, huh guys? Alright, let's not count those. How about those licensed games? Probably shouldn't count those eithers. Jeez we sure can't think of many games.

this thread again?

I tried finding it both by traditional search and google, and couldn't come up with it--so I assumed it was from the old forums.

If you'd like to give it a try and provide a link, well go ahead. :)

edit after link: I thought there was a much larger thread than that

Marc Ecko's "Getting Up"
Michael Jordan:Chaos in the Windy City
any Spawn game...

I feel there as been more lately but i don't remember on except CJ...
If only Africa wasn't busy exploiting their people and actually taking care of it we could see more Africain devellopers and see more black characters.
Some devellopers from the carribeans wouldn't hurt. But the weather is so godly out there that they prolly don't give a shit.

That new guy in Soul Calibur 3 is pretty badass.

The black fireman from Eternal Darkness. I think in Gauntlet: Dark Legacy you can be a black guy (Yellow knight I think?), Outlaw in Twisted Metal: Black

I wouldn't say that the weather is always godly in the caribbean, as it's usually just hot. The cities are pretty miserable. They just happen to have lots of beaches, and life is always good at the beach. Paradise is rocking in a hammock at the beach in the shade with the only sound you hear being the waves crashing on the shore. Pina Colada helps too.

Yeah well of course i was speaking of "the good side" only ;)

kratos is black. he just has a terrible case of ashy skin. depending on whether you've played god of war, this will either sound like a stupid joke or a stupid pun. :(

What about the Major from Unreal Tournament. Isn't he kind of the unofficial "face" of UT (think I remember reading that somewhere).

You also have Lego Mace Windu in Lego Star Wars.

The black guy in ED was the coolest guy ever in a videogame, for once they didn't stereotype. I really enjoyed ED. I hope we see more excellent games like that in the future.

Even if it's not really important for me we have to keep in mind that it's part of a completely natural and obvious psychologic reaction.
When you play as a character you identify yourself to him somehow, consciously or not.
Then i can understand that a black guy can notice "a lack" of black characters, i suppose i would react the same if all characters where not my nationality/skin color.

Making an issue out of it is stupid though. You have to understand that the person who makes a game is more likely to have characters looking a bit like him and his nation. Our imagination is also related to our envirronement after all. Since the majority of people making games seems to be caucasian and asian people, it's pretty obvious those nations are the ones represented in their videogames.

Some of my personal favorites:

The main character from Unreal 2 (I can't remember his name right now). He wascool because he was just a cool character and not some sterotypical stand in that got killed half way through the game.

Axel from the original Streets of Rage. Again just a cool brother bustin' heads with Alex and Blaze.

Shadow Man, the games were dark a creepy and kept the intesity of the comic. Character in this game was cool and confident.

Malcolm from the Unreal Tournament series. Always a cold blooded killer with style, reminds me of Avery Brooks character Hawk on Spencer for Hire (and his own short lived TV series). Some of his quotes are too mainstream in Unreal Champikonship 2 and you can tell the developers listen to a lot of pop rap because some of the quotes are just totally MTV (i.e Drop it like it's hot...gimme a break).

Blade from Eternal Champions. Notto be confused with our favorite vampire hunter or John Stewart the black Green Lantern. Blade was cool and had a decent set of moves. Man I'd sure love Sega to revive that series..but I digress.

That's what's off the top of my head, I'm sure a dozen more will pop into my head as soon as I post this. We need more down to earth brothers in games, and chill with the flamboyant stereotypes. The ones I mentioned above I liked becuase they're strong characters and didn't feel like they were exploited or thrown in as filler.

You mean Adam from Streets of Rage. You can't forget Skate, either. :lol

Its African American.

WTF I'm surprised you didn't say . . . whatever.. .

I say the king's black bishop in Chessmaster 2000. He was badass and actually black.
