Release Date:
Friday, June 7 - Australia
Tuesday, June 12 - US & Canada
Monday, June 11 - UK and rest of the world

Tony Iommi – guitar
Ozzy Osbourne – lead vocals
Geezer Butler – bass guitar
Brad Wilk - Drums

Highly anticipated, 13 has had it's fair share of troubles after Tony Iommi fell victim to cancer, delaying the album until 2013. Luckily, the album doesn't disappoint. While it is by no means comparable to classics such as Paranoid & Vol 4, 13 is a surprisingly strong album that shows that the classic line-up (minus Ward) can still make damn great doom metal. 13 is the first studio album by the band with Ozzy Osbourne on vocals since 1978's Never Say Die! and is luckily far less disappointing than it. The album is the first studio release by the band since 2009's album The Devil You Know with Ronnie James Dio and Vinny Appice (under the name Heaven and Hell).

Technically, it's also the first studio album by the band under the "Black Sabbath" name since 1995's Forbidden, but we like to pretend that Black Sabbath's collaboration with Ice-T never happened.

I liked "God is Dead?" but was only vaguely aware of a full album coming out. Thanks for making this thread, especially with such a great OP! I'm listening to the album on iTunes so far and I'm liking what I've heard so far.

I'm about halfway through and am very pleasantly surprised so far. This is far from the "return of the kings" some people wanted (not that anyone realistically expected that anyway), but it definitely seems to be above average.

Iommi is still a god, killing it as usual

You're welcome, hopefully you're enjoying the album!

I created this thread so that more people would know about the album's release. I've been hyped for this album for months, so I jumped at the chance to write an OT for it back in April, and I'm really happy with what I came up with. This is the first OT I've created, so I was pretty hesitant about posting it.

On an unrelated note, I think I'm amazed that I actually found out what the Black Sabbath font was for this release.

Yeah, some expectations for the album were crazily high. I expected a solid album that was similar to the classics, so I'm happy with the end product.

Looking forward to listening to it, I can't believe it's been so long since a real Black Sabbath album came out.

The only thing annoying me so far about this album so far is how PR keeps claiming that it's "the first album by Black Sabbath in over 30 years" completely ignoring everything from Heaven & Hell to Forbidden.

It's pretty dishonorable to Ronnie James Dio along with everyone else involved in the later albums.

2009 wasn't that long ago, and that album while not the heights of Heaven & Hell or Dehumanizer of that same line-up, was pretty cool. I can't get into this new album at all, it sounds all so very plodding and uninspired, Ozzy is also more a detriment then an asset musically speaking.

Wow talk about some shitty advertising, sounds like typical Sharon Osbourne bullshit though.

I like it. Production is a lot cleaner and Ozzy definitely can't hit notes like he used to, but the songs themselves are pretty good. Iommi's guitar work in particular is outstanding, and Butler is a beast, as always. It was never going to be an instant classic, but I'm happy that the album at least doesn't tarnish their legacy.

As a side note, I think the song they chose to use as a single (God Is Dead?) is probably the worst song on the album. Strange.

...and I do think it's better than Technical Ecstasy.

Yeah, I expected them to not mention The Devil You Know as it's technically another band (although it's Black Sabbath, literally), but to ignore fifteen years of albums released without Osbourne is just insane.

Something made even more disgusting by the fact that Bill Ward isn't on it.

For some reason I'm listening to this wishing Pete Steele was singing on it, it'd be a killer Type O album. But he's dead. :(

Better than I expected, though. Iommi/Butler together is god-tier, with or without Robo-Ozzy.

Loving this album. These old guys still got it. Ozzy's voice is still good. Iommi killer as usual.

For 64, it's pretty amazing.

Album is surprisingly solid...Listening to it makes me wish original AiC was still around. Imagining Layne singing this rather than Ozzy is making me want to go listen to Dirt.

Dio was an awful singer, I don't count that garbage.

I haven't seen this claim, all the PR I've seen has said "first Black Sabbath album with Ozzy Osbourne in 35 years" or something to that effect.

Although I'm no fan of most of the "other" Sabbath albums, I love the Dio stuff and I also loved "Born Again" with Ian Gillan on vocals.

Bill Ward has always had health issues over the years, it sounds like he wouldn't have been able to handle the touring with this album.

Ozzy said:
Regarding Ward's absence from the SABBATH reunion, Ozzy told Mojo: "I guess it's to do with finances or something. But there was also another side to it. When Bill came along, we all had to ask, 'Can he do an hour-and-a-half, two-hour gig? Can he cope?' My suggestion was that we run through a set and see how he got on because he was so out of condition and the drummer is the most demanding job in the whole band. We looked at Bill, and he couldn't remember what the fuck we were doing. But he didn't come clean and say, 'I can't cut this gig, but can we work something out, guys, where I'll come on but with another drummer backing me up?' Or, 'I'll come and play a few songs.' That would have been cool."

Goddamn, I miss Pete and Co.! The Sabbath style sound is what made me love Type O in the first place. Such an epic sound that really shaped so much of modern metal.

Edit: Holy shit at 6:37 of God is Dead?!!!!

But aren't AIC releasing a new album soon?

I wish Layne was still around, but DuVall is doing a pretty good job. I loved Black Gives Way to Blue personally.

You're one of the first people i've heard say he's an awful singer, he's pretty much the prototypical high-vocal metal singer that many others tried to imitate.

Unsurprisingly all those bands tend to be awful too. He had talent on a technical "he can hit the notes he wants to hit" level, but when he has such an awful sounding voice, the loses any impact.

Ah come on you're trolling now. Ever really listened to classics like Heaven & Hell or Dio's albums with Rainbow? It doesn't get any better then that, so much soul in these songs and his vocals.

After my first full listen Ozzy feels like the weak link. Iommi's just throwing out crushing riffs like you'd expect him to though, and it still sounds as amazing as it always has. It's a solid album which is the most I expected from it so that'll do me just fine. Still excited to see them live later this year as well and hearing some of these tracks would be a treat.

Wouldn't compare it favourably to The Devil You Know though.

Just released actually, and it's a stormer. Not sure if it's as good as Black Gives Way yet but it's still a very very good record and well worth your time!

I completely agree that vulva has to be trolling to some extent. Rainbow's material shows that Ronnie James Dio has an absolutely amazing vocal range and numerous styles that he can use, Stargazer is an absolute metal classic. Do I have to even talk about his years with Black Sabbath? He completely reinvented a band that had fallen apart, even the incredibly underrated yet crazily heavy Dehumanizer is a masterpiece.

His versions of classic Black Sabbath songs were also damn great.

Been listening to this all week and it is absolutely kicking my ass. I like it more with each listen, and it absolutely rivals some of their best vintage work in my opinion.

It sort of reminds me of Van Halen's Different Kind of Truth, in that both albums succeed in recapturing an old version of a band's sound without coming off forced or tired.
