BlackAce's Super lite Gundam DS impressions

Blackace

if you see me in a fight with a bear, don't help me fool, help the bear!
Ok before I start I want to say that I have spent maybe a whole 20 mins with this game and plan to play in the bed before I hit the sack. I bought it today in hopes of playing it on the train ride home and owned myself because I left my DS on by mistake last night (Zoo Keeper + drinking = not turning off your DS) But I thought I give anyone waiting for this game a real quick impression..

So far it has a nice little SRPG feel to it, and it is all done turn-base style. I can't really go into too much detail about the whole combat system yet because I am still learning it! But you can stack your bots and do cool combo attacks and each battle gives your pilots EXP and SP. The SP from what I can tell are used for the crazy power up attacks and what have you.

Graphics are nothing to write home about, basically you control a little robot head icon move it to the next robot or ship and attack...the attack screens have nice animations but they already got stale in my 20 mins... SRPGs are not about the graphics per se...

You can upgrade your robots and research new tech from what I have seen. And I think the most units you can have is five... sorry that it is so bare bones but I will get back to y'all tomorrow with more details...any other JGAF memebers or importers feel free to chime in...

It's this or Namco X Capcom.
I need your impressions to at least equal duckroll's by tomorrow at noon or Gundam misses the boat... thanks :)

looks like Bandai is going to miss out on a sale then...haha but I must say that any good handheld game is worth quite a bit here in Japan's train system.. I have a good 40 min ride to work tomorrow and I am look forward to it!!!

Ok for the update!

This game is freaking wonderful! It is very deep for fans of the strat genre! Mechs have a tech tree as you go throughout the game and mistakes can kill you like any great strat game. It is a nice blend of forgiving and ruthless (see Advance wars and FE for ruthlessness in a handheld strat game) The one ding I have on the game so far is true to the series it is spawned from there are a ton of long winded speechs in the start of battle, in the middle of batlle and, you guessed it, after battle! Why this sucks is there is no way to gloss completely over it if you have already seen it and started over..

Different attacks are strong or weak against different attacks and defenses.. making it a guessing game as well as a game of planning.. capital ships also play a large role in battle because they can heal mechs that dock on them and they can unleash powerful long range attacks.

Outside of the long winded speechs I have found no flaws after a good 4 hours of playing. the tech tree is quite big and looks rewarding to explore. This game ranks up there with the great strat games on the handheld systems so far. IMPORTERS beware this is not a very friendly game to play with no Japanese ability... I have a bit and the Kanji used in this game is pretty well over my head.. When/If it comes states side pick it up it is that good!

Sounds great. Has there been any word on if this will hit US shores or not? I couldn't imagine them leaving it in japan, what with Gundam being quite popular in the states and all.

It will more than likely stay in Japan, none of the previous SD Gundam SRPGs ever made it this way to my knowledge. Not exactly sure why, however as it doesn't fall under the licensing and interest issues of Super Robot Wars,

I would be shocked if they didn't bring it stateside to bloster the DS games at the very least.

I also wanted to say that from my first *ost I was very wrong about the amount of units you can control.. I have had 14 at most so far and it seems like you can control more than that even...
