The Daily Freeman reports that locally filmed scenes for director Steven Spielberg's The War of the Worlds, starring Tom Cruise, will need a more ethnically diverse group of extras than those who turned out for a casting call on November 13.

"We want to make it so they don't just kill white people, they kill everybody," casting director Billy Dowd said during a visit to Athens, New Jersey this week to sort through some 2,000 applications and photographs.

Politically correctness gone horribly, horribly awry
It's great that the film people are trying include us in their films. We are generally not shown on television/movies, and it's great that they are thinking of us. Anyways, it's Spielberg's movie.. if he wants to make his film more realistic by using a diverse cast, props to him.

Going to love how Spielberg is going to explain a diverse cast in 19th century England (or is this some shitty remake that's going to be set in the US....*cry*)

It's set in the US, modern day.

*groan* At the least I hope it won't be ID4-2

And I have yet to see a Mexican or Asian in American cinema not be played up to common stereotypes. Hope Spielberg can break the mold

No it's actually set in the 19th/early 20th century, like the book.
No, it's not.

In what time period does the film take place?

The latest WOTW movie is said to have no relation whatsoever (other than the Martians) to the famous classic film of the same name that opened in 1953. While the earlier version took place in London, the modern version will showcase the invasion in a "working-class environment" according to WOTW screenwriter David Koepp. Koepp felt that it "would be very interesting" to put the film in a "rusting, industrial America-look".

Ok my bad I could have swore that Tom Cruise said in an interveiw that it was set the same as the book. Screw you Tom Cruise for making me a liar.

If you're Asian, then you can only play the following roles:

1) Jedi-like martial artist out for revenge.
2) Completely evil bastard, who also knows martial arts, but deals in prostitution, drugs and/or illegal immigration.
3) Nerdy math guy who is used for comedic relief.

But aren't there actually two WOTW movies in development right now--the Spielberg/Cruise "modern day" one, and another indie version with a lower budget that's actually a period piece?

Is it just me or is the most interesting part of this news the indication that the only people that went out for the original call for extras were largely white? I'm not entirely sure of the ethnic diversity of the areas of New Jersey where this was shooting, but the areas I'm familiar with are pretty freakin' diverse across all ethnicities.

I'm pumped for this movie though. I don't care that it's nothing like the book. Spielberg + aliens = winner!

So then explain to me the Asian psychologist guy on Law & Order? Or maybe I missed the episode where he went kung fu on some perp's ass?

if he were handled a little better maybe he could be considered breaking the mold, but the last episode of SVU i saw was this one where ming na wen is the sister of a whore in chinatown and ...

yah, sorry. still no good.

And even i am moderately surprised
this :

wotw-hinestwo-2.jpg

looks like how i imagine WotW to look, and looks akin to the musicals AWESOME artwork.

the US shots look like Half Life 2!

These movies mean more to me than could be stated, and it makes me sick that everythin has to be changed so it's set in America. We've already had a movie version set in the US and almost certainly covers most aspects .

and if the ending is the same as the yee old movie
where f*cking FAITH saves the day *vomit*
and not the book
enviromental factors/bacteria - India? British Empire? Hello???
then blood will be spilt.

It's well over a hundred years since the book, just PLEASE give us a faithful version. I wonder if the actual message of the book will sail over peoples heads?

Don't forget all the Patels' in the motel industry. Don't know if it's the same in Australia, but Patels run a ton of motels here in the US.

Naw, however they are a lot of 'office worker' Indians in TV now. Being a liberal asian homosexual must be worse so I can't really complain about how Indians are portrayed. You're getting portrayed 3 different ways.

Oh great one freaking psychologist, which btw plays into yet another stereotype (though positive).

OK, being at a uni that is 44% Asian does tend to skew my perspective a bit. :lol

You go to UC Irvine?

I wanted to go to UC Irvine, but I ended up going to a Cal State because most of my friends are going there..... biggest mistake ever. There are a lot more asian chicks in UCI than at the Cal State I go to :(.

No one watched Oz? The Catholic priest in the prison was asian. The show was on so long ago, I can't remember if they killed him off or not because people died on Oz left and right. :lol

I dont think Asians have it as bad when it comes to being represented on television. I'm hispanic largest minority in America ( I think) and who do we have on tv representing us? George Lopez and Dora the Explora! :lol

levious

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.
but we have our own networks, at least two of them in every cable company's lineup.

True enough we have our own networks but i think that was out of necessity since we are not represented in the media except for maybe the token gangster, landscaper or maid.
